- rgreadsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Exactly what it tries to be, The Lightning Mage is a tumultuous lesbian romance / gamelit story with no real 'good guy' protagonists, just characters going through their often self-created obstacles to try to find a happy ending.
Characters have faults, misunderstandings abound, and sometimes the whole world seems set against the main character ending up with her crush.
But it's a Wattpad romance. You know how it's going to end. The fun is in getting there. - luda305Royal Road★★★★ 4.0The Lightning Mage has really, really strong characters. The main character and her friends are wonderfully, written, and the antagonist is a giant asshole. Often in amateur writing, an author tries to make a character imperfect by giving them a single flaw, though that only draws the eye to how unreal they are. Here, though, Lyn, Cydney and the gang are real as can be: people who are really good at a handful of thing, and then just barely get by with the rest of life, including relations with other humans, friends and lovers alike. As an audience, we reach the highest highs and lowest lows as we watch these lovely characters succeed, fumble, and fail in turn. If you're looking for something to waste a Sunday afternoon or three, this is a decent read to pick up.
(To be clear, I read to chapter 42, then skipped the 12 chapter flashback and read to the end of the story).
That said, the characters (and the grammar I suppose) are the only really strong points in the story. The plot, the worldbuilding, some of the broader structuring: It's a bit of a mess. I don't know what a Wattpad romance is that my fellow reviewer refers to, but I kind of get the hint. The plot is full of holes, the story occasionally veers into the extremely dark, there's a huge 12+ chapter flashback for reasons I can't divine (and that I skipped), the characters are frustratingly bad at relationship with other humans, somehow the solution is werewolves, there's a weird subplot involving the prior generation, its' weird that Sybil is so self-sacrificial, etc.
That said, while the plot and worldbuilding are often nonsensical, the characters drive the story so well that it's not hard to close your eyes and just enjoy the wind in your hair.
Two other comments.
One, about the synopsis, we the audience know that Cydney is from another world. For some reason, this isn't revealed to the other characters until like chapter 40/41 (out of only 66 chapters), and given that there's a 12 chapter flashback s - JubaJrRoyal Road★★ 2.0Sorry, couldn't finish it. MC not ever using Cydny's (sp?) name was just irritating to me. The story was nice, but having people misusing names is a pet peeve that I cannot get past. It's rather dismissive of their individuality and personage. It's just another way of telling someone you don't matter enough for me to remember your actual name.
