- Abraham-DeWittRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Archon is a very competently written apocalypse LitRPG that features an interesting twist on the "progression" genre.
Style: The author has a very competent writing style. The conversations between the characters flow well, and actions are described succinctly. There's nothing in the style that would cause me to complain.
Grammar: There were no issues with spelling or grammar that I could see.
Story: Archon is a good apocalypse LitRPG. The world ends, and the MC must learn to deal with this new world. I particularly like the "godling" aspect of the story where the MC is essentially a nascent god who gains powers by gaining followers. Seeing the MC's following increase as he gains power is an interesting concept. One minor complaint I have is that, as far as I've read, there isn't a particularly good hook. The apocalypse at the start of the book serves as something of a hook, but the main character has no particular connection to that world. Not to backseat author, but I think the story could benefit from a contextless action scene near the start that could showcase the heights that the story's power-system can reach.
Character: The author hasn't had much time to describe the story as far as I have read, but I like the characterization so far. The MC hasn't had much of a chance to show off his personality, but I particularly like the characterization of the glowing orb guide that follows the MC around. - C. Sebastian NuttRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A good start; I can see this story going the distance. Though my review title might have been a bit misleading, this magic system is called Breath, I feel like this story has some serious legs. Don't sleep on it.
Style: Reading through this, I found that the actual style was fairly subdued, not standing out to obstruct the conveyance of the story at all. I am a fan of this kind of writing, it allows for the narrative to smoothly continue along. The constructions are intuitive and pull the reader along with them.
Grammar: Not much to say here, as I did not see anything that really stood out to me. Reading through, I found no errors, which is precisely what you are looking for when reading a web novel. I did also not find any serious attempts at manipulating the language that stretch it out and destroy the meaning. Well done!
Story: The story is just kicking off where I have it and I am more than okay with that. With his world having come to an end, Gage wakes up in a new merged world with only his dog and a sentient crystal for company. He is told that he is a god in this new world, and now he has to set off on his own personal quest to grow in power and influence. The setup is strong, and I believe that the following story will only prove the premise more and more as we see more chapters.
Character: I take a few points away here because I feel like we haven't spent enough personal time with Gage to really understand him. That is fine, that is what the whole of the story is for, but I do miss that. Starting this story, I was certain that it was going to be centered around a dog, and I am a little disappointed to find that it isn't, at least not yet. - IndigoSpaceManRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am a big fan of progression stories, however there seems to be a particular saturation of game systems or cultivation. It is good to see a classic fantasy story of a regular guy in the a new setting during the apocalypse. The MC is level headed while also forward thinking.
The best part however is the hook of divinity. The idea of a regular person ascending and making friends in similar positions holds a lot of potential and appeal. The magic system having been touched upon feels straightforward and makes sense; internal, external, and spiritual power. I can see a few paths I might take in the same situation for power acquisition and it just pulls me deeper into the world building (my favorite part of a story :p)
The writing is very smooth and easy to read so I can stay engaged too. Overall very well done, would absolutely recommend and cannot wait to see more! - trichoplaxRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Story: the story does feel like classic progression fantasy but the author adds an interesting twist, a dog! It immediately throws you into a world that is seemingly deemed to end and upon the MC's death(?), he is thrown into another world alongside his dog, Eshu. Eshu is absolutely adorable and adds much substance to the story. It accompanies Gage on his journey to becoming a god and gathering worship.
Style: This story is very well written and the writing style makes it easy to fly through chapters. The author is able to skillfully transition from comedic to serious moments and each scene is extensively described. The dialogue is well done as well, feeling natural while not making the story look like a script instead of a novel.
Grammar: I did not spot any major errors. If there were any, they were not significant enough to perturb my reading experience.
Characters: The two main characters, Gage and Eshu, have an interesting dynamic that is portrayed through the chapters I've read. Even Matuk introduced in chapter 2 has his own quirks which fit well into the established dynamic of the duo.
Overall this was a great read and this novel had a lot of potential. While I have not read much, I can already say that this story is worth the read!
