Description
Become a dragon, and save the world.
Drenar found a dragon hiding in his soul, and two of his other friends found out they were going through the same Awakening as him. Dragon science gives way to sudden realizationsthat their situation results from magical experiments from a mage rebel group. Their goal: to recruit the newly awakened dragons, and overthrow the mage world government.
With chemistry class the least of their problems now, he and his friends vow to put a stop to that, and embark on a journey that will reveal startling truths about their world--and themselves.
With the daunting task of saving the world from those who have hurt him and his friends personally, Drenar recalls the words he’s always needed to give him the strength to do what is right.

- nunu007Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good world building, characters, and dialogue. Its been generally fantastic all around so far but its easier for me to list any silly gripes I have than to ramble on about all of the good.
personal note on the chapter i’m reviewing from because I must rant about it
I swear by all deities in existence that if Julia ends up with Nick I will change my review to a -50 stars and learn how to ddos as to express to the author my infantile feelings on such a possibility (im unsure if I will be so invested but I would be upset)
-some of the decisions characters make seem entirely unreasonable, i get that its a group of emotional teenagers going through some wacky wizardry, but sometimes they do stuff because the plot requires them to go somewhere rather than because they came to that decision themselves. - GREATJRMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As I make this review, I'm on chapter ten and already love it! The characters feel real, and the story is flushed out. And, I just LOVE dragons. Maybe a bit to much. At chapter ten there is not much use of the full dragon form, and I'm hoping to see more of that soon. But overall: I Love It Already!
- JIYProgrammerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You, mister Swiftscale, have written a masterpiece that invades my waking life. This story, as fantastical as it seems, contains many incredible scenes, and myself being not much older than the characters I wish I was here. How incredible it would be to discover myself a dragon! Alas, it could not be, but I will remember this story well and look forward to every day of its release.
- MekanipRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well, it took me a little bit to get hooked on this series, but I did. The Legend of The Luminaires is, quite simply, about some teens who find out that they are turning into dragons. This isn’t a spoiler, it says so right there in the blurb. I have to say, it’s hard to get me hooked on a webnovel. I’m usually too busy, too picky, or I get too distracted to read them. But around chapter 5 or 6, this one pulled me in. I’m still near the beginning of this epic, so I may update this review as I read.
Characters- The characters are likeable, and their friendship feels believable. You really get the sense that they’ve known each other for a very long time, through good times and hard.
Grammar- I’ve noticed only a few mistakes, but not enough to dock off any points.
Story- Strange things are happening to Drenar and his friends.
At first, I wasn’t really drawn in by the whole “talking to a dragon” thing, but when the physical changes started manifesting in Drenar and company, that’s what pulled me in. How were they going to react to metamorphosis? How are they going to hide it? How were they going to test their newfound powers? It gives me the vibes of a 90s Nickelodeon serial and I like that a lot.
Style: This is where I have to knock a point off. This is %100 personal taste, but there are only two minor things that detract from the experience: the dialogue, and how Drenar and his friends react to the change they’re undergoing.
The first, Drenar, his friends, the adults, many times they all speak like they are playing a game of D&D. That can distract me from the story.
The second, when Drenar, Julia, and Evan find out what’s happening to them, I find that they’re a little bit too ready to accept it. They’re just like “Oh, we’re turning into dragons! I know because of a book we read!” Personally, I would have liked to see a little bit more disbelief, denial, shock, and maybe a little bit of horror. It would have added more urgency to the situation. But maybe that’s just - SnowwickRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The characters and world are amazingly flushed out, and as far as I can tell, every question that pops up has received an answer. Incredibly satisfying as a reader. Not to mention that the author truly cares and takes time to answer questions in the comments make this story 5/5. Great Read!
- Tu ShuaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story has its merits; however, I must mention that the length of chapters is quite long, especially the first chapter with over 6,000 words, which could be a bit of a turnoff. I believe splitting it into smaller chunks would significantly improve the overall appeal. Additionally, the cover could use some rework to increase its allure. Now, let's discuss the story.
Style:
The writing style is good and descriptive. The author takes care to explain the details, and the reader can sense the author's ambition as every little detail is described. Additionally, the structure of the story follows the hero's journey cycle.
Grammar:
I didn't find any errors in grammar.
Story:
The narrative begins with a mysterious dream and then transitions into a slice-of-life for a while. The story is undeniably a slow burn, at least from what I've read.
Characters:
The characters are well-written; they are not a thousand-year-old assassins but rather act like normal people.
Overall:
For enthusiasts of a slow burn narrative, this story promises an engaging experience. The deliberate pacing allows for a more profound exploration of characters and plot. However, for those with a penchant for action, navigating through the slice-of-life segments might be an effective strategy to maintain momentum and interest. - cnagarajRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall this story is off to a great start! Love the urban fantasy setting as its not something you see everyday. Usually the MC gets isekai'd to an old-world type setting or that old-world setting is the foundation for the world. So having this in modern times brings a fresh perspective.
The characters are lovely and so fun. Their friendship with each other really drives the progression of their "growth" (wink wink). I also appreciate that they have complexity to each of them, its a great foundation to build off of as the story progresses. ALSO I love that there's a little bit of romance involved. Its not heavy handed at all and makes the characters feel so much more real.
The plot is definitely interesting! I'm intrigued to say the least on where this goes after finishing volume 1 (and into 2). The mystery of what's happening in the world and to the people in it is truly a page turner.
The narrative perspective can be a little tough at first - but after about 3 chapters you dont even notice it at all.
So yeah over all - this is a fantastic story and I could not recommend it more! - Samantha NelsonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: Author is an author friend.
This story is amazing with a single giant flaw.
The author's focused elsewhere, far away from mwah!
The author tells a story of kids becoming something more.
Awakening a dragon heart, they're greater than before.
Researching and seeking, they strive to solve it all
while I am left there waiting; it's quite insufferable!
The grammar won't deter you. The style is all there.
The characters are intriguing; I just need to get my share!
So give me all the screen time! Leave the heroes behind.
Everyone loves a villain; especially the singing kind!
Now dear author, I stand waiting, lurking in the wings!
It's time for me to take the stage for all to hear me sing!
~Val - NPDavisRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5STYLE: The writing style is good, except that it’s written in present tense and that grated on me at first but I got used to it by the end of the first chapter.
STORY: So far the story has been very interesting, with a build up to Drenar’s transformation, which i assume will happen soon. Just a little nitpick, when I read the name Drenar I certainly wasn’t expecting an urban fantasy with a setting in Colorado. Everyone except Drenar have pretty normal names, but once again that’s just a nitpick. it broke immersion for me initially but I got used to it.
I have one complaint here, that the chapter lengths can feel a little too long, and just shortening the chapters and changing nothing else would do wonders for pacing.
CHARACTER: So far this has been the best part of the story. The characters are well developed and their banter is very fun to read. Especially Drenar and Julia, who bounce off each other very well. Drenar and Alex also have very humorous dialogue in the ‘dream world’
GRAMMAR: no complaints here, it’s an absolutely clean read.
OVERALL: The Legend of The Luminaires is a fun urban fantasy with great banter between the characters and a slowly-building plot, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading urban fantasy. - ARR62Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5So, I've had my full of YA. I do like the genre but being a mature adult (meaning, of an advanced age), I do like to read about adults, with adult feelings, reactions, knowledge, etc. All that being said, this story has grabbed me. The layer of magical world on top of the mundane is a trope I love. That the magical world is full of intrigue, the ruling council is chock full of hate and specieism, and rules unfairly with an iron hand thus making the murderhobo rebellion look better by default, even better. In this context, the clueless teens who get sucked into all of this, without their consent or knowledge be makes for a great story. Even better, they're competent teens, mentally and physically.
The world building is good, the characters are complex and definitely 3D.
So why only 4.5 stars? Because the dialog between teens gets to be too much at times. I honestly just skipped through paragraphs knowing it wouldn't affect my grasp of the story. I get it, as a fledging writer myself, I love writing dialogue. But there's advancing the story, fleshing out the characters, and excess. Also, and this is a pet peeve of mine, I want the author to trust that the reader is following along and doesn't need mini recaps constantly or to be bludgeoned over the head to see the obvious. Having characters repeat themselves over and over? Blecch.
But, that is my only criticism and this story so far, I'm halfway through Vol 2, is engrossing. I highly recommend.
