The Last Roman

Description
In the final days of the fifth century, the Western Roman Empire stood on the brink of collapse. Its legions were weakened, its treasury drained, and its Senate fractured. The fate of Rome rested in the hands of a boy emperor, Romulus Augustus, whose name echoed the empire’s glorious past.
But what if Romulus had a chance to change history? Armed with visions of the future, he faces the daunting task of restoring Rome. Each choice he makes—every alliance, reform, and battle—could secure the empire’s survival or hasten its fall.
“The Last Roman” is a story of leadership under pressure, where loyalty clashes with betrayal and ancient traditions meet bold innovations. It is the tale of a boy rising to become a savior, striving to transform the ruins of an empire into the foundation of a new age.
Update Schedule
New chapters are released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Currently, Patreon is 10 chapters ahead, but I plan to expand this early access to 20 chapters in the coming months, offering an even deeper glimpse into the unfolding saga of "The Last Roman."

- daddy_daoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am sad that this is not getting updated... I loved this novel very much. I have been reading in Royal road for years but this story was the reason why I started using Royal road with an account. Just to follow and review this novel. I am quite surprised that this story is so under rated. Author i request u to not be discourage by the underperforming of this title, you have done amazing work.
- Arthur_PendragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like this story, it's not boring and sometimes there are other points of view, but it's not one of those points of view that lasts for a long time, and it's only for a few parts of the chapter and that's good, because it doesn't just show the world seen from different perspectives, both friends and enemies, even ordinary people...
It's very realistic, without super "brilliant" ideas that simply don't make sense at that moment in the story, without powers or things like that, without super innovative innovations?? You know? like electricians or things like that, the innovations are basic, like for example: stirrups for cells and so on...
So, good job, author, and I hope the story lasts a long time, so I can read it until I'm old 🤣🤣 but seriously, don't give up, keep it up until at least 2000 chapters, then I'll be a little satisfied 😌
Don't stop, because I want many more chapters...........
More more more more more more more......
Boy, it's hard to reach the word quota, because I swore I already had 200, but I'm going to extend this paragraph a little more, so I can finally hit the mark, so I can finally leave my review....phew!

. - Bob_The_AvengerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love kingdom building stories of most kinds. This one has it and bases it at the fall of the western roman empire. A great place for the rebuilding of an empire. I am glad there is no system or other "summon troops/resources etc" that some stories have. This ruler has to build an army, train it, equip it and have men lead it. Progress seems to be about right. He didn't invent the train in the first month and is now working on a space program like some of these type of novels do. Just a great story. Thanks for writing it so I can read it!
- ChicotheguyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First thing, good on you author for writting anything, and the quality of this is above average by the standars of this site.
It has enougth good qualities that I tried reading further. It is written well enought, don't get me wrong, but it lacks in depth understanding of technologies and of the time period - Not that it is basic, to my 16 year old self it would be quite complex, but it does not hold up to scritiny if you've completed a college education.
That deficiency could be worked through if the political intrigue or the characters were well written enought, and being frank it gets like 75% there, but I think I will have to drop it. If you don't mind some minor inconsistencys and just want to devour some light reading, go all in.
But if you want to know, I will point out some of the flaws I find with the writing:
1. The insane amount of repetion (most conflict boils down to people repeating the same arguments, and a lot of the times you will have two big paragraphs of some character saing basically the same thing the MC just said)
2. It also somehow feels like political propaganda. Like, I get the need for the characters to do pro-roman political propaganda to the masses, but there is no need for the author to bash me in my head with 'the glory of rome' every two sentences. (It gets back to the repetion)
3. This work would probably be a lot better if the author cut 30 to 50% of the words there. Make it faster, more concise, the characters get less anoying by repeating less the same wories. You could even get more space to add more images, more descriptions of the city, of the food, of the lifestile, if you just cut the stuff you already said.
4. On the plot relevant inconsistencies, the author:
- does not understand the agricultural reforms that lead to the middle ages advancement of production (full utilizarion of horse power - invention of horse harness, of horseshoes, advancements on the plow)
(on that line, the iron plow is not efective because it is made - Jack ONiellRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This site needs more AH content and I’m happy to support them whenever. And who doesn’t think about Roman at least once a day ;) So far the story has good writing and release schedule. Looks promising and has the potential. :) . . . . . . . . . . . . :) .. ..
- Reader1587Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Grammar - no issues, nothing that would break your reading immersion. Very minor disputable points only.
Style - works well for the story. I would dispute a bit slice-of-life tag. There are a lot of things going on; multiple conflicts are developing in the remnants of the Empire, including the intervention abroad. The stakes are also very high, and the protagonist is very clearly aware of that. Pacing of the story is a slower one; chapters tend to be on the longer side without annoying cliffhangers.
Characters - multiple characters, switching POV is done well without disrupting the story flow.
Overall - great story, reads like already published work.
+ Rationally and strategically thinking protagonist
+ Level of realism
+ Clear prioritization of recovery efforts
+ Depiction of a crumbling Roman Empire
+ Politics and plotting in the Senate and Church
+ No magic involved
+ Multiple antagonists
+ Daring gamble on foreign intervention
- Only one prominent female character so far (Centurion's wife)
- Some minor plot and logic inconsistencies (for example, the farmer would not know about the nitrogen)
- Even an enlightened novice emperor would probably face stiffer opposition
- Tax collection would likely be more challenging - 1CuzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This fanfiction is a good take on an alternate Rome, good details, political intrigue, and some battles. The characters feel real, and the world is immersive. My only complaint? It drags a bit in places. A faster pace would’ve made it even better. Still, totally worth reading! I'm waiting to see were you take this
- The Crimson FuckRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like the story about Roman empire coming back from the falling empire. Story has great character growth and great progression. My critique so far is the chapters are to short but i get it you need time to write and to plan the whole story, my fear is that the author is going to quit the story when the best part is about to happen.
- WilertimRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Itches a very good itch. Solid characters and storytelling. Always love seeing the substantial perspectives of the people from different sides and culture.
A story of growths and betrayals and greed and unlikely alliances that guides the way of every character in their own vision of a better world. - StikulzonRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Don't get me wrong, I'm not against using AI to improve the writing, but this novel has too much repetition and excessive dialogue. If the author had cut 60% of the text, it would have improved the title a lot.
The story itself is great and has quite a unique concept (at least I hadn't seen Roman kingdom building before).
