Description
The Last Orellenis on hiatus. The break won't last forever, but it will last a long time. I wouldn't count on new chapters in 2025.I still love this story. Some of the notes for it are in a place where I can look at them every day, but I'm not in a place where I can write about Kalen every day. My plate is full of passions, projects, and of course my fair portion of everyday life stuff. I'm fortunate to be very busy, mostly with good things, but it means I can't giveOrellenthe majority of my attention. And when I was writing the last few chapters, I realized that giving it less than that wasn't going to work. It deserves better than the time I can carve out.So I'll be back when the plate is emptier, and I can makeOrellena top priority. I'll have a stack of finished chapters in my hands, and I'll make sure the road ahead of us is clear as far as I can see. Looking forward to it,Sieley According to prophecy, the ninth-born child of Lord Orellen will have the sort of power that changes the world. But in a land ruled by magical families, no one welcomes the possibility of a dangerous new player. Fearful even of their allies, the Orellens come up with an extraordinary and deadly scheme to protect themselves. If the most powerful people in the world wish to kill the ninth-born, they will have to find him or her first. And that's not going to be easy when the Orellens have called upon dark magic to create hundreds of heirs. The boys and girls are given new bodies, new names, and even new magical talents before they are scattered across the continent. Only one among them is the real ninth, but all of them will have to grow up in a world where they are fugitives. Kalen, once fated to die, is now an Orellen heir in hiding. And he is determined to survive, even if he has to master his strange new powers to do it. The Last Orellenis a long, character-focused epic fantasy with progression. It's set in a vast universe, and it's about a boy's journey to become a powerful magical practitioner. Clever and resourceful protagonists. Big fantasy worlds. Multiple cultures, lots of characters, many different types of magic--this story is expansive rather than closely focused on a narrow storyline. Old-school epic fantasy. Progression fantasy that takes its time. Our main character will be progressing through magical ranks, but this is going to be a lengthy story. If you're more about the journey than the destination, this might be the book for you.

- Blackbird0Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0To sum this story up in a single word - captivating. The conflict driving the plot is an incredible idea, where the whole world is hunting the Orellans and they all come together to fight this fate, using all their wealth and cunning, magic and might.
The characters are rich and vibrant, all very realistic, from the main character to the most insignificant people who appear in only a single scene. The Orellan family in particular was wonderful to read, and I'm truly rooting for them and their cunning plan.
The author manages to bring me from mildly interested at the start, to absoluting gripped in the story to the point I had no clue what was going on around me due to the progression of events and how they're laid out. There were highs and lows where I leisurely read, or when my eyes kept jumping ahead to the next word, I was so keen on finding out what would come next. The humour dotted throughout made me laugh aloud, and overall, I feel the story unfold very naturally. There's no part where the writing is lesser in quality and I imagine the author is very experienced and talented.
The only slightly lacking part was the begining, where it was a bit confusing when jumping different character views who are in different worlds and not having a clue about the setting, but this is very slight and cleared itself up. I do feel that impatient readers seeking instant gratification may lose interest, but as they say, you can't please everyone.
The magic is new and interesting, and I especially loved how the subtle power of luck magic had such an amazing effect. The execution of how the author discovered and revealed it was really well done. I hope there will be more focus on this subtle yet overwhelming power.
The quality of writing and grammar is perfect as far as I could tell, and it was a real page turner. I couldn't stop reading even if I wanted to. - Idris FoudhailiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Last Orellen is a hidden treasure on Royal Road, offering a refreshing take on progression fantasy that blends intricate magic systems with heartfelt storytelling. The novel follows Kalen, a young boy from a remote island, who discovers his rare magical potential in a world where sorcery is both revered and dangerous. As he navigates a complex web of family legacy, magical training, and looming threats, Kalen’s journey unfolds with a slow but rewarding pace that captivates readers seeking substance over flash.
The strength of The Last Orellen lies in its world-building and magic system. Clarke crafts a vivid fantasy world with a deep history, where magic feels tangible and governed by clear, fascinating rules. The sorcery system, rooted in unique bloodline abilities, is both creative and meticulously detailed, appealing to readers who love intellectual depth in their fantasy. Kalen’s growth as a mage is gradual, grounded in trial and error, making his progress feel earned and immersive.
Kalen is a compelling protagonist—curious, resilient, and relatably flawed. His perspective as a young, unpolished talent grounds the story, while the supporting cast, from enigmatic mentors to rival heirs, adds layers of intrigue and emotional weight. The prose is polished and evocative, striking a balance between introspective moments and bursts of action, though the slower pacing may test readers accustomed to faster narratives.
The only reason The Last Orellen falls short of a perfect 5 stars is its update schedule, which, as noted in community discussions, can be sporadic, leaving readers waiting for new chapters. Additionally, the story’s deliberate pace might not suit those craving constant action. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise exceptional tale.
At 4.5 stars, The Last Orellen is a must-read for fans of progression fantasy and intricate magic systems. Its underrated status on Royal Road makes it a delightful discovery for those willing to dive into its r - InnominatusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There’s a lot of good stuff on RoyalRoad. However, most of it is the pulp fiction variety. Fun and campy stories by authors coming to grips with their writing style and grammar in general. Slice of life stories that are very creative and entertaining, but with writing quality that can vary wildly from chapter to chapter. I enjoy many of these stories and I think it’s a great use of the platform.
But this story… this is something special.
It’s still in the early stages, but the chapters that are posted are incredibly well written. Seriously, the level of polish is publish ready. The writing is readable and coherent, the story is compelling and exciting, and the characters are interesting and have weight to them. The magic system is also rich and complex, and one of the things I’m really eager to learn more about.
In addition, the story premise is fairly novel for a reincarnation theme. There’s the familiar scenario where the hero dies and is forced into a new life and body. However, he died as a child and doesn't even have full awareness of that brief life. In fact, there’s indication he was more gifted in his previous life, and he will either need to repair his various traumas or find a new path to power.
So, this isn’t a reincarnation story where the main character starts off overpowered with tons of skills and knowledge. Don’t get me wrong. That can be really fun too, but this is more a case where the hero selected hard mode with lots of growth and challenges to face on his journey. If that sounds interesting to you, then check this story out!
Optional Start
As an aside, the author offers two ways to dive into the story: start as normal with chapter one or jump ahead to chapter nine. Personally, I started from the beginning and don’t regret it. This provided excellent world building and more impact to the main character’s plight once he was introduce.
Honestly, I don’t think the author’s suggestion of skipping ahead is a good idea. If you love the - SethtillianRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has been amazing! I finally decided to read it since it was on rising star and i do not regret a second of it. I love the slow world, lore and magic system building! Very well written it is just a shame that there are so few chapters out at the moment. Truly a must read for fantasy readers.
- TeraSvRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I would want to write an advanced review but I just binged all chapters that are out and can't express why I found them this good.
I might update this later but the MC is the best writen child I have read on RR, the gramar and style make for an exelent reading experience and while the story is not far enough to make other statements I like the premise.
Edit 1: I forgot a seemingly well crafted magic system. - inferiousRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's rare to find stories that aren't just pure wish fulfillment on RR. And while I'm excited for the progression fantasy parts, the writer has done a phenomenal job with making the characters feel alive, making us care about these characters and getting us emotionally invested in the outcomes. And more than just the characters, the story itself feels alive.
- mike karrRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0insanely good, quite possibly the best book I've read on RR and Ive read a ton . Seriously do yourself a favor and pick this one up . The writing and concept is so insanely good... but the most impressive thing is the magic. The way it starts is just ,.... ugh its so good .
- ranchAutomataRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a must read. It is written really well. All the characters feel like actual humns and not props for the mc to interact with, and the story is also really intersting. Also, the world seems alive and has massive potential. Only downside is that there isnt already 5 books worth of it.
- vesuviusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The writing throughout is solid. The first few chapters almost lost me with the time jumps and multiple character POV's but it was well worth it. This is a very enjoyable story to read. The story's pace is just a touch too slow, but I haven't skipped or skimmed any parts of the story. I have been engaged in reading the entire time.
- xaviermccRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I dont ever really write reviews, but this is a really promosing start. Has all the elements needed to be up there with the best on this site and is the most promosing new story i have seen in a while. I would highly recommed reading it.
Keep it up Mr Author!
Edit: Now on chapter 21 and its still really good.
