- AdversusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0TL;DR: It scratches that healer litrpg itch, so try a few chapters before giving it a pass.
The Last Healer is written in a brisk/matter-of-fact/no-nonsense style that's somewhat light on both description and exposition (compared to most RR stories), but instead prioritizes exactly what it wants to, making each chapter feel substantive.
Particularly, the protag's exploration of the healing magic system, which feels like the story's main focus as of chapter 16, is handled to an increasingly interesting depth rather than hand-waving or arbitrary numbers going up.
The way she learns about and grows into her power is gradually being woven into a strong narrative about a young girl struggling to survive in a world that would rather keep her power contained than allow its use where it's needed most. Her various struggles, setbacks, and successes ultimately make for a compelling story that scratches that true healer litrpg itch in a way so few stories do. - lenkiteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Proper Healer stories are vanishingly rare on Royal Road. Most of the healer stories available here are about combat maniacs or some disappointing subversion of the traditional healer - not realizing that such plot devices have become even more generic than the traditional healer.
This is a traditional fantasy healer story - an orphaned girl who desperately wants to heal the only living member of her family - her unconscious brother and her magical awakening gives her a path in achieving her goal. But she cannot reveal her awakened Healer talent as it has vanished from living memory in the present age - the profession being replaced by credentialed mundane professionals called mendicars.
Lily needs to educate and train herself in secret. There no System given guidance. She is poor and she needs to sustain herself and her brother while studying for the attempt at a mendicar's license.
The tension is always turned on in the story - her wins are always fraught with danger - her simple victories at healing and surviving the risk of discovery all the more potent. The magical system may be standard, but through trial and experimentation, she has discovered the beginning of a path at merging present-day mendicant concoctions with ancient healer arts for great effect at curing patients.
Lily is also a genuinely good person - and thankfully neither naive nor stupid. She keeps her secrets well and is always careful - she would not have survived to her present age as an orphan supporting an invalid sibling in a frontier town otherwise.
I enjoyed reading this story to its latest chapter and eagerly await its continuation.
