The Immortalizer

Description
Edwin is a tall, strong, handsome young man from a remote but otherwise unspecified village in the faraway countryside, who is not at all secretly an undead mage in disguise. The completely normal Edwin wishes to join the Adventurerβs Guild, an association of government-funded mercenaries that protect the citizens from dangerous monsters that lurk in the wilds.
Edwinβs journey will be a perilous one as he learns to fight, makes new friends, and slowly begins to realize that even the best-laid plans donβt survive contact with the enemy β which, often enough, is none other than he himself.
DISCLAIMER: This is not one of those regular OP MC hidden master stories. Edwin won't suddenly start slinging spells and murdering everyone like he's in a bad anime. While magic plays a major role in the world and the story, the actual fighting contains very little magic, at least in the beginning.
If you're interested in a realism-focused world where people don't just shrug off hits, with a unique, hard magic system, where the main character doesn't have the power to change the course of history but gets impacted by politics and intrigue just like everyone else, maybe have a look. You might like it.

- SteadyRoyal Roadβ β β β β 5.0I like the story- the dialogue between characters are pretty chill and feel natural. The world is rich and fleshed out- like how mages are treated, and the explanation/enviroment of what exactly a mage adventurer is. There's an army and war going on and it effects the adventurers, and vice versa. It seems like a complete package. The explanation of what weapons are recommended for beginners is great for similar reasons. Most characters that get attention feel well rounded, rather than flat. Even the characters that exist for only a couple paragraphs seem alive.
I think some things I've noticed is that despite a strong story, I found my attention divided during the first couple chapters. It's a lot of exposition, I guess. My attention held significantly better as soon as other characters, even minor, started to exist. I find myself second guessing what the main character wants sometimes; it's not intuitive how immortality would connect well with... a normal life, such as a farmhand or an adventurer. I think such a scenario is plausible, but... somehow it feels like there's a disconnect there somewhere. I think it's not exactly problematic, but maybe I could use some more convincing. His avoidance with anything from his past life seems like baggage. Baggage that's a part of the story, and sounds interesting to explore. But at this point it seems somewhat arbitrary or contrived (but as the story continues, I think this could easily play out well). Edwin is quite eager to 'live in the moment', which is quite zen of him. But I have trouble imagining someone that is zen to also have so much... anxiety regarding past relationships is rather odd. Of course, I think I'm just describing features of the story, rather than some weak points, but... I suppose I want some progress regarding this aspect (ex more backstory, or more revealations of what type of person Edwin is/was, etc), because it can feel like.... "oh no, I'm anxious about people. I'm going to feel melancholy... *s - HASHARAHHA14Royal Roadβ β β β β 5.0I really like how the characters physique is explained (it is earned from many years of planning and work.). The character has monstrous healing abilities/stamina? Well, that isn't just because they are the main character or anything, but because they designed this new body themselves and the quirks that come with it (even if they probably think they overdid it). Very interested in seeing how this story develops.
- Normal7615Royal Roadβ β β β β 5.0The book is very good. I've been looking for a book where the mc is physically enhanced and it seems like I've finally found one. The way the power is also written, how it interacts with the rest of the story is done superbly. I honestly started this book with apprehension thinking it would be about another "magic loving mc" and thought it is, it contains enough of the physicality that I'm looking for to make it enjoyable. All in all, a good read
- akkarinRoyal Roadβ β β β β 5.0I really enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to reading his next work.
however, this story was ended at around the middle of book 2 (of three planned), with the summary of the rest of the plot, and some worldbuilding afterward. so if this kind of thing bothers you be aware. - Color_cowRoyal Roadβ β β β β 5.0This is a fantastic novel, I'm surprised I didn't find it earlier. The author does a great job of solving the problems others novels face when trying to use a "hidden master" protagonist. If the master wants to stay hidden, they have to be somewhat of a selfish psychopath because of their refusal to help their friends and allies when they easily could. If this isn't the case, the story usually doesn't create situation where the hidden master is pushed and needs to reveal their power. Wagenar solves this issue through the unique way in which Edwin hides his power, and the threats he would face if he reveals himself.
Also, I like the immortalizer. Ignore the reviews that complain about it. - Bobby jobbyRoyal Roadβ β β β β 5.0I think this story is good because it is good! Although the first few chapters are somewhat unclear I think it's shaping up to be wonderful. I'm going to keep reading. Maybe you should try it?
Giving five stars because the story is flawless period, nothing has made me want to drop it. (No indeferable text π and or tone shifts that make you want to cry) - TsorovRoyal Roadβ β β β β 4.5Very good book.
The premise is interesting, the main character hasla good, thought out personality (even when his style of talking changes around chapter 10 or so). The side characters have distinguishable characters with very well thougt out backstories. If you like a progression fantasy with magic, this novel comes a bit short, but I think that will change with the second book. I look forward to it. - TheloniusRoyal Roadβ β β β β 4.5The immortalizer has an interesting concept, satisfying world building, and a solid cast of characters.
What puts this story above most of the works on this website, and I guess many of the works in the adventure genre, is that events never really feel contrived. Edwin is special because of explained events. Edwin screws up because of described flaws. Other characters like or dislike the cast with reasonable cause. Edwin fails his own goals despite his advantages due to realistic causes, both those within and outside of his control.
There are definite flaws to this work, there are lacking characters (Leodin). But, by and large characters and events do not feel FRUSTRATING or FORCED.
The immortalizer is well written and entertaining. You should check it out. - de defRoyal Roadβ β β β β 4.5Loved the story, heartbroken to see you did not finish it. Thankfully for the summary of the remaining storyline.
You could have just have Edwin return to Walters lab for a reset, and reboot your story with a next life in my view, would have given you a clean slate to correct what you feel you did wrong.
Anyway, thanks for the story!
For prospective readers don't let the above bother you, two kickass books well worth reading. - 3TimRoyal Roadβ β β β 4.0Style:
Very solid. I found myself easily invested in this world.
Story:
While I prefer the more adventure type route Book 1 took, Book 2 has more magic elements that are always interesting. I dislike human (and species with human level thoughts/aspirations/etc) deaths, so war settings aren't for me. I would have liked to see a filler type adventure or side story between book 1 and book 2, or more downtime in general β while there was downtime, we didn't really get to see any of it. Side cast is slowly getting flashed out, but I'd like to see more of our MCs past. Like how was he cool with just uprooting entire life, what happened to all family and friends.
Grammar:
Solid. At least nothing stuck out as bad on this side.
Character:
While we see some fleshing out here. Lack of downtime means we don't really get much on their background other than a few key conversations. I feel like once I get some background on a person, I don't really see anything more about them later on. I guess without shifting PoVs, the only way to flush this kind of thing out is interaction with MC. I think the back-to-back adventures/war stuff means we don't get those opportunities.
Overall:
I feel this is worth recommending. I pretty much read it cover to cover. While it suffers from a lack of downtime, the world itself is pretty interesting. If the war type stuff keeps going for future books, I may end up dropping it from my shelf, but what I have read is worth trying.
Side note: I wasn't huge on the title. I feel like it deterred me a bit, but I choose to give it a chance anyways.
