- LazieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This low level crab is enthralled by this short story. The two main characters, Ulzan and Ataen are quickly established and fleshed out in the short time we are with both of them in the story. The style is well done. This crab could feel the fear Ataen experienced in the story as if this crab was riding on his back with him, and how he reacted to the situation in the story was written perfectly. I will not spoil the story, as it is a short completed read, but the moment it kicks off into the story, every moment is fantastically written.
This story is the first in a series of short stories. While RR favors long form serialized fiction, keep an eye on this author. You will not be disappointed in any future uploads! - ZATsamizdatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I thought this was a really well constructed piece of short prose. During my read I didn’t notice any major flaws.
In terms of writing style, I really enjoyed the vibrant use of descriptive passages. I liked how vividly the naturalistic setting was brought to life, and I think that was the standout strength of the piece. The action sequence was intense, and clear in detail.
On a technical level I didn’t notice any typos or grammatical errors.
It’s a piece of short fiction, so the story is going to be simplistic by necessity. It’s a basic struggle for survival, competently paced and told well. No complaints.
The descriptive text does a excellent job putting us into Ataen’s head and conveying his sensations. Through his thoughts we also get a good sense of his motivations and what drives him. Again, the character dynamics between Ataen and Ulzan are simple, as necessitated by the length of the story, but well done.
Overall, this is an excellent short story. I’ve heard that longer fiction is more popular on this site, but if you’re looking for a realistic low-fantasy piece of short fiction with a lush and beautiful natural setting, be sure to check out The Hunter’s Law.
