The Humble Life of a Skill Trainer

Description

For Joshua Still, Skills were the lifeblood of his business. He wanted to understand them, collect many of them, and teach a few of them. Which was a problem because while his profession of a Skill Trainer was perfectly legal, it was frowned upon by most of the kingdom. After all, it wouldn't do for a non-tailor to teach Tailoring. Or, so says the Tailors Guild.

The same could be said by the Blacksmiths, the Bakers, the Butchers, the Candlestick Makers, the Mages, and every other Guild with enough money and clout to complain. But still, Skill Trainers provide a valuable service, and so he has managed to start his business and keep it under the table. To a degree. With many a bribe. But his quiet anonymous life of research, practice, and training was about to change. When the Baron demands you pay him a visit, you have little choice.

The author seems genuinely surprised that this gem of a story has taken off. Characters are believable and endearing despite only being 16 chapters in at the time of this review. Could do with more world building, but once again, we're only 16 chapters in so this may change with time. As a whole though? Easy 5 star rating.

Slightly slower pace, no huge expositions or info dumps, no power creep. On the other hand character interactions, action scenes and the pace can be improved upon a little with a clearer goal for the protagonist.
The synopsis reads more darker than the story actually is.

Sincerely one chapter and it hooks you. I don't have words, the prose, the grammar, the character, all is good.
Which only leaves the story... How far will this go? Isn't it overhyped? I don't mind overhyping it more.

Love the book. Leaves little to be desired. Wish there was more character development for side characters. Otherwise a 5/5 book. The magic system, background, and depth of lore is awesome. How it all pieces together is great. I wish the time skips were more infrequent but otherwise I love it.

We are familiar with the no pain no gain way to acquire skills where you need to do the grind and be rewarded by it. But have you ever thought to hire someone who can help you efficiently grind your way to the skill you desire? This story is based on the adventures of one such person where he along with persons similar to his profession tries to experiment with the system to further their skills... and their pockets. Cuz whats the point of doing it when you can't get rich in the process right?
Anyway the story is much more grounded and realistic compared to the other litrpg in RR. MC is very logical and cautious, even paranoid to a point but its a given based on his experiences in the past and his current circunstances.
At the moment only the MC and a few notable characters are fleshed out but this is because its still rather early in the story and not the writing itself.
Action and comedy are seamless in its transistions. Very well choreographed and "shows rather than tells" these in the MC's perspective.
In conclusion, this story very well written story with action and comedy sprinkled in between interesting experiments and self dialogue. For those who has moved past from OP mc and absurd power levels and non-stop fighting to a more steady paced story with more logic behind it then this is for you

Finished reading - I generally really liked the overall story for the first 60+ chapters.
The system and its slow expansion was really cool and wish the author explored it more instead of ending it off abruptly.
At least we got a “clean” ending to the series so that’s appreciated, but I feel a lot of potential was left untapped.
spoiler The main characters taking a back seat towards the conclusion of the series also felt like a bit of a let down.
overall: good binge, would love for more stories to be built in this world.

This was a fun read and though it seems like most characters had good backgrounds, I think slightly more time could have been spend on the mother.
A second book where he starts off training the kings men, and then go back to the barony with Snowy will be good. Though the story has an end, the end is a great beginning.
Maybe "The not so humble life of a skill trainer" is a good idea then there can later be "When the student becomes the trainer" as a third.
I think this story line have at least two more stories to tell.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. The plot was interesting enough to keep my attention, without being too convoluted to push me away. Most of the story progression and character growth fit well into the overall world that the story painted. The ending came across as a tad rush/suffering from power creep (due to the new character that showed up towards the very end of the story), but otherwise the pacing was really good in the beginning and the middle of the story. If you got some spare time and the story description caught your interest, I highly suggest giving this a read.

The story is overall probably worth a read, especially if you are interested in progresstion/cultivation stories with a system. While the story begins in a way that seems to be overly and unnecessarily edgy it eventually finds its way to a decent balance. I have two main complaints witht he story, firstly that the majority of the story seems meandering and lacking a driving plot or purpose (and the character writing is not strong enough to support the story on its own).
Secondly, for a story set in a fantasy world there is a lot of wierd gendered ideas baked into it, most noticably in the form of the story's leading woman, despite being a brick house and combat machine, being pretty consistently depicted as being 'emotional' and 'vulnerable' and weak in a disinctly 'womenly' way that I would honestly only expect from fantasy written before the '60s or by bigoted creeps like Terry Goodkind. If you can stomach it long enough to get to the last chunk of the story, it does improve somewhat, but I wouldn't fault anyone for checking out of the story before getting there either because of this or for other reasons.
The story, if you reach its ending, leaves you with more questions than answers and seems like it was setting itself up for a sequel folling the main character in the future, but without any of the (already scant) grounding and roots that make him interesting and more than a pizza-cutter of a protagonist.

The ending felt abrupt and unsatisfying.
It also felt very rushed, as in the pacing of the story and the delivery on the last chapters were more and more compressed with time.
Then there is the problem of leaving the skill research completely unexplored after a certain point.
Like the author spent so much time explaining and exploring skills and and how they manifest for Joshua. But then at the end completely drop it all for the later part of the story.
