- David GilesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5First off the positives, of which there are many. It is some of the finest and most detailed world building I've read in some time, with a hint of Tolkien to it despite the sci-fi setting. Everything is thought out and considered and it shows. The main character clearly has a wealth of backstory that informs their every action and there's an overall dystopian vibe I rather liked and the action and intrigue is dynamic and flows very well.
I do however have one criticism, there is a poor sense of continuity where there is an expectation the reader will already know things explained in previous volumes. Given this will not be a problem on this site I have no problems recommending this book heartily however should it be published separately I would highly recommend a prologue of some form. - JonHRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Wow. That's my first takeaway from this one-- wow. I was asked to read this as part of a review swap, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing here.
Descriptors never overstay their welcome, characters have a unique voice, and dialogue is snappy and graceful.
The setting itself is something very fresh and unique. While I'm not totally into furry settings, here it's not even a blip on my nitpick radar.
The writer has created a very grounded yet insane take on the space opera, and the detail makes readers want more.
Character wise, I'm very interested in seeing how a certain relationship develops. 2nd person POV is incredibly unique, and lends itself well to the overall story.
There's a lot to read, too with almost roughly 600 pages, there's a lot of content for the thirsty here. This is a writer dedicated to his world. And it's impressive that I never felt as though I was being spoon fed lore! The world is drip fed through dialogue and character observations. Never lore dumps
The quality of writing here is something special. I'd recommend this story to anyone looking for a fresh take on sci-fi. This story is brutal and engaging. - CobaltWolfRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is part of a review swap. I want to note that this review was specifically asked to look over newer chapters, and while I did that, I also read a good portion more of the story to get context. I enjoy the review swap stuff because it gives me the opportunity to find new works with committed authors who actively want feedback. I was asked to read Volume 4 parts 1-12, but I decided to also take the time to read the first volume. Needless to say, I enjoyed it.
The grammar is fine, but I think we need to focus on style. This story is second person, which is very fucking rare. For personal context, one of my favorite books is If On a Winter’s Night, a Traveler” (yes that is the full title). It’s a second person postmodernist work by an Italian author, and it is an extremely engaging read. If you ever want to understand what good second person storytelling reads like, or understand some of the roots of postmodernist literature and writing that consistently breaks the fourth wall, read that book. If the author of this series hasn’t read it, I especially recommend it to them so they can see an older example of second person storytelling.
The thing is, the second person perspective can create issues in itself. It can get draining and can often mess with the story as well as create confusion with the character. Long form stories with second person perspectives are hard, and the author is doing it well. Not just well. This has some insane writing chops and uses some interesting techniques to get its ideas across. I don’t usually give stories a 5 for style, but this one definitely deserves it. It can sometimes go overboard, but it never hits the “eyes as cerulean orbs” level of pretentiousness.
The story and characters are where I think people are going to get the most messed up. Our two main characters, you (who I’m just going to call Anon) and Mare. She has a name, but Anon mostly calls her mare, so I’m sticking with that. The duo is strong, and it makes the interactions
