The Heroine is a Villainess (Rewritten)

Description
Ophelia lived. Then she died.
Like clockwork, her death was predetermined by the flames of fate, emerging in the darkness of her 18th birthday. Yet, time rewinded. Again. And again. After 9 lives of being abused, neglected, married off to monsters instead of men, she had enough.
A saint, some called her. A vixen, others murmured. No one in the high nobility knew who this girl truly was, yet none seemed to not yearn for more, to look away from her bewitching grace. And as chess pieces gather, from the most eligible bachelors in the kingdom to women with peculiar tastes; Ophelia observes the pawns slowly moving, their actions causing bloodshed everywhere they touch. And she loves it.
Has her soul become evil, or has she merely gone insane?
Sneak Peak:
"
“You are both revoked from your duties as my handmaids and hereby expelled from the Wharton’s estate.”
“Thank you, milady!”
“But, since you damaged the dresses, you are to repay their full price within three years. If you refuse or fail to obey this command, you’ll have two fingers removed. Pack your things and go.”
“But that’s impossible! You know we can’t pay that amount! You are dooming us to fail, Ophelia!”
The Duke was standing at the corner of the room, looking at them as if they were nothing but mere ants, ready to be squashed at a moment’s notice; however, reality only sunk when they saw the wide grin on my lips. It was satisfying, so satisfying.
“I don’t recall giving you permission to address me so casually.” My figure leaned forward, approaching their desperate expressions. “You’ve raised me since I was but an infant, however, my mercy won’t be tested any further.”

- HisperiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really enjoyed the original version of this work it was as a matter of fact the first villainess style project I read that I liked. Can’t say I’m all about villainess’s now but it opened up the subject to me as being one that’s worth exploring. It is a bit dark and there’s been a possibility balanced on razors edge at times of violence and seemingly certain death, though I don’t say this as a criticism. I like manner the author introduces our MC who while won’t win any awards morality is a character who is self aware and can be understood.
This marks an important distinction for me when dealing anti-hero type characters having self awareness and circumstances behind their actions is key for the amount of sympathy and investment they get. Not that there aren’t great villains out there who are irredeemable or only show commendable traits at the beginning or end. Just that a character who is hemmed in by all bad options gets more of a pass and can be a more identifiable person which makes following them more fun. Keeping things in the realm of possibility is another key pillar of support for a good novel for me.
I am aware that this is a fantasy heavy site but there’s throw everything including the kitchen sink for entertainment and keeping things in the realm of possibility within the rules of the world they inhabit. There’s also for that matter keeping the rules of the novel universe from as the author of demesne put it being just plain silly.
This work has stood up well to these fundamentals. I’m writing a review kind of early on certainly much earlier than I usually would for a project I’m interested in because it does have some draw backs in the rewrite that I commented on needing work. There’s a few chapters that have paragraphs which seem to so far have thesaurus spilled on them.
It didn’t completely detract from the over all readability, more so it disrupted my train of thought. I read on and it’s not a consistent issue for every chapter, it’s isolated as far - EvercrestRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Everyone sucks. Literally, nearly, almost everyone, is such an irredeemable pos. Ophelia as the protagonist isn't even particularly redeemable herself, but at least her actions are excusable due to the nature of her backstory, but man, everyone sucks.
The story itself makes for an entertaining read. There's a good degree of 'getting back' at people, and with most things it happens fairly quickly, but not always. The major revenges themselves are taking a while to progress, which does make it a bit tough at times to get into it, because you just get tired of everyone... sucking.
As a rewrite grammatically it's pretty good. No complaints as far as casual reading goes.
I think my biggest dislike for the story itself and the reason why I'll only casually read it here and there instead of properly binging it is an excessive reliance on tropes. This, I don't blame on the writer inherently, it's something that's majorly prevalent in the genre itself, but a lot of times these overused tropes come off completely illogical or just flat out pointless in the grand scheme of things. More bothersome than anything as well. A servant's value is in their servitude for example, 'loose lips, sink ships' logically, if a servant is running their mouth excessively they should be cut down. Especially when there's a very flamboyant and petty character that lashes out at the smallest of grievances.
Genuinely, wanted to give it a 3.5, but not going to punish the writer for an overall enjoyable story despite the flaws.
I do think though, that the potential in writing is there to create something really great without needing to rely heavily on some pretty... crappy tropes (the SA, abuse, chatty servants, so many rapey individuals, etc etc), but I do understand that using them does tend to create more drama in the grand scheme of things that keeps people clicking onto the next chapter just to see when the shoe will fall (or the heads in this case I suppose)
Anyways, at the end of the day. It wa
