- GrumpsterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Starts off with a warm start and destroys that sense of familiarity, bringing readers truly into your story, with mystery awaiting Taiyō and what may await for him at Kyoto.
I'm honestly happy that your story is the first I've read on the platform. I look forward to reading your next chapters, you were very on point with the character beats and plot beats. - NixxyxoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Hi!
As stated in my review of your first chapter, I very much enjoyed this read! Not only the depth of your character, that instantly pulls you in from the beginning, but by the story itself.
You paint the characters, the background and the story perfectly. Acting like a reel in ones mind, its a wicked play on the imagination which i congratulate you for.
I am keen to read more and will be following closely for your future chapters! - WilliamGabriel10Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This fic has a good start and follows an interesting premise of a character with cat phobia. On an ordinary day, they are attacked by a cat demon, encountering a world of spirits. Dialogue is well conveyed and quickly established and the protagonists are likable enough.
I feel some of the action drags on a bit at times and there is a bit too much showing and not enough telling. There are also some moments where characters feel a bit bland. Some elements could be more efficient. Even so, grammar is pretty good and there is nothing major to complain about.
It is also not at all a bad start and I'm interested to see where it all leads. - RetsuRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5As of now, I really enjoyed this novel! You’ve done a great job capturing Taiyo’s emotional conflict. His shock and frustration over the sudden shift from a normal life to being thrust into this supernatural world felt very real. The tension with his parents, especially when he realizes how much they've kept from him, adds a nice layer of complexity to his character. I could really feel his mix of anger and love for them, which kept me hooked.
The scene in the armory, with all the ancient weapons and the samurai armor, was super atmospheric. It gave a real sense of Taiyo stepping into something much bigger than himself. I also really liked Yumi's no nonsense attitude, she contrasts nicely with Taiyo's parents more protective nature. The setup for the training in Kyoto adds a lot of anticipation, and I’m curious to see how Taiyo will balance his new reality with trying to keep a grip on his old life.
That said, I think some parts of the dialogue could be tightened up a bit. At times, it felt like the characters were explaining things a little too much, which slowed the pacing. For example, when Taiyo is being told about Kyoto and the Imperial Samurai, it felt like an info dump, maybe you could spread out the details more naturally across different scenes.
Overall, though, the blend of supernatural action and family dynamics is really engaging. I’m excited to see how Taiyo grows into his role. There’s so much potential here! - TheBBBRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The first chapter of the book is quite useful in immersing me into the world which encompasses the protagonist. The reason behind Taiyō’s dislike of cats is presented in a humorous manner which is easy to relate to and it also sets a great stage for the forthcoming supernatural angle. There is a gradual increase in the tension which is well interspersed with light moments that are quite funny as well as some frightening situations, particularly when it comes to the nekomata. The transformation of the demon cat into nekomata is vividly described and the reader could practically feel the threat that Taiyō has to deal with. Taiyō’s opinions expressed through his internal monologue are quite relieving and they make him a likable character whose stories in the book are quite engaging. There are a few instances where the speed of the scenes could have been bettered, for instance, his contemplation about exams was rather slow. However, the author has managed to build the story in such a way that the readers know, or at least hope for more action in the upcoming sections, than in this one.
Also, the following chapter has a very powerful premise, combining the ordinary and the supernatural; however, at times, the performance appears too verbose because of the excessive use of explaining and talking in the dialogue. Taiyō’s struggle put on him by his status switch is appealing, but the speeding of the conflict is let down by the needlessly large and detailed scenes that focus on portraying the tension at the expense of other plot development. Though a crucial part of the story, Yumi’s character struggles with being more than a flat, straightforward character with little development in her reasons for acting as she does. There is a silver lining, the emotional scenes which have Taiyō with his parents are well executed, emphasizing on how Taiyō's character momentously is the focal point about family secrets. To sum up, still the story has many areas to cover before it can be co - scantraRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story had a brilliant start and the main character, Taiyo, is very likable and has an excellent voice.
I really enjoyed the writing style and the comic relief was well done. It didn't feel forced or out of place like I have seen in other stories.
The world-building was pretty good. I could see the main character as he moved from place to place.
If I had to provide some constructive criticism, I would just point out that as a parent, I would have been a little more resistant to having a stranger try to bring my kid into a world I didn't want them to be a part of. I think that would have added a little more realism. Otherwise, this story was excellent. It was an enjoyable read!
