Okay.
So, reading through this novel is an okay and pleasant experience. Throughout the entirety of what was released so far, I enjoyed this work heavily for its story and its characters. What it is right now is an introduction to the characters' new environment, with a nice and pleasant sprinkle of light-hearted comedy. The characters are easy to visualize and connect to, and I found the story a well paced intro to a slow burn school life.
The story is as advertised by the synopsis, the author's "What to Expect" category quite accurate. I appreciate for what it goes for, as it leans a bit more into the new school life. It's nicely paced and truly does feel like I'm watching a girl accustom herself to a new environment.
A nice read to enjoy for its story and characters... if you go into this with an open mind about the rest.
Grammar-wise, there's a lot to really say about it. The story is quite nicely written and it's easy to go through for the most part. However, it's not "perfect" and this work will have the most critical of readers stop at certain sentences and punctuation issues. The author is quite open to story edits and criticisms if you notice any and are open to sharing any in the comments. I certainly appreciate it and believe this story has 5 star potential, but - keeping this review as "objectively unbiased" as possible - I have to leave it at a 3.5 rating at the time of writing this. Solid, but could use improvement.
Style-wise, the story doesn't... feel fully first person. It's hard to explain why, but I found The Healer Mage's Formation best enjoyed if I treated this story as if Amaris was talking to me with her own personal account, and telling me what was happening instead of an author writing a first person account of a character. This book gives off the unintentional energy that it is meant to be strictly enjoyed as Amaris talking to herself or talking to a fictional little angel/devil over her shoulder, which does work - R. C. VettaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is first and foremost a slice of life( at least from what I have read.)
The beginning is all about the main character's journey to her magic university where she will learn everything she needs to know before she sets her sights on a bigger adventure. Much of which is foreshadowed quite early on.
Style wise this story feels as if it is being relayed by the very shy main character. Much of her thoughts are entirely kept to herself and not shared with the other characters. This creates an interesting meta dynamic among the characters and the reader. Which is unique and takes a little getting used to, but if slice of life is your vibe then it is right up your alley.
Grammar- the author is very upfront with them not being a native English speaker. It shows at times in some of their common usage or word choices, but isn't Royal Road supposed to be the place to get help with that kind of stuff? If you want something perfectly polished and without a single issue then sure this story might give you pause, but if you enjoy giving input and providing suggestions then you are going to enjoy the ride. I particularly enjoy finding moments where a native speaker might use an idiom or colloquial phrase.
Story- The main line of the story is based around Amaris going to a magic university and then her life once she gets there. It is simple in its description, but has tremendous depth as more characters are introduced and their relationships develop. The foreshadowed future conflict is a slow burn, but should be exciting once it comes to the forefront.
Character-I felt like much of the story takes place around the main character, while we as readers receive her perceptions and thoughts. As a grown man, I cannot speak to the authenticity of a portrayal of a shy girl's thoughts, but everything copasetic to me. Her commentary on the other characters' actions made me laugh at times. - TheBBBRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story does a lot to build up tension & brotherhood between the characters. This aspect of Noru’s physical personality, and the stark difference between Noru & Erina, being more outgoing but also more lively to Erina’s reserved but shrewd personality. Some of the aspects of the tension between rivalry & respect where shown very good and blunted on the others. The level of description helped set the scene & the goodbye at the train station tasted like a clever tearful. The funny dialog & slight keep the interpersonal communication apparatus exciting & genuine, and I wanted to know how these relationships would turn out.
- Blue NoonRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I found this a very comfortable, easy read from the get-go. The writing style is straightforward, which is the best way to be in my book. There are some sentences that are a little awkward, and it doesn't quite flow in some places as it should, but nonetheless, which is why I give it 4 *s for style, but I should emphasise this doesn't massively detract from my overall enjoyment reading. There are also some moments where the MC (in first-person narration) seems to directly address the reader, which pulled me out of the story a little.
The story we are thrust into starts of quite slice-of-life. We learn a revelation about our MC in the prologue before the story leaps ahead nine years for chapter 1. I will admit I have a distaste for time jumps at the end of the opening chapter. I like the story to start where it starts, but the author uses the time jump well here. We are shown how our MC is special, in more than one way.
The characters are the real strength here. The dynamic between the MC and her best friend is wonderful, and they compliment each other nicely. As do the other secondary characters we are introduced to early on. The dialogue feels natural and there is a lot of heart and humour there.
Overall, I'd recommend this work if the genre appeals to you. The writing style could be tightened up in places, but it doesn't take away from a charming story.
