- Paul James KeyesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Have you ever wondered what Beauty and the Beast would look like if it were written for a more mature audience, had a more in depth magic system, and a fleshed out fantasy world filled with mages and curses? No? Well you should, it’s pretty freaking cool! Townsfolk who wander too close to the cursed castle are trapped there forever, doomed to turn into inanimate objects. Wild beasts are malformed there, like something out of Annihilation, and go out in hordes to recruit more victims. No one around even remembers that the castle ever existed. It’s pretty wild.
This work is still in progress, and a little rough around the edges, grammatically speaking, but it’s still solid compared to a lot of the fiction on this site. The little errors are easy to read-through so don’t worry about that. I’m sure the author will tighten up the prose with time once the story is more completed.
Despite being an early draft, the characters are well fleshed out and intriguing. The plot is on point and has me hanging off the every word. I came in expecting to leave some sort of critique but for the most part I only have praise for this new writer. It’s hard to create a world that feels genuine, but that is exactly what they have done. There is heart behind the story, which is what makes it truly special and a joy to read.
The magic system is a lot of fun—the author really nailed the tone. It feels like an adult fairytale. Stylistically, the prose paint a picture with just enough detail to feel full and alive while still keeping the story rolling forward at a nice pace. Overall, this story is a great find, and a definite recommended read. - RealKCMacRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Michael's characters are immediately likable and intriguing. Right upon meeting Gost and his sorcerer I was hooked, more than ready to dive into his world and follow the journey of the muscle and the mage as they track beasts terrifying in their description and wonderful in their mysterious reappearance. This is a world lush with description and steeped in development and lore. Though descriptive, Michael is fast paced, moving us quickly from scene to scene with a fresh and thought provoking journey. I can honestly say this is one of the finest stories on Royal Road, one worthy of reading again and again. I highly recommend it.
