The Ghost Specialist
Community Rating
Description
Samuel Greyson wants to be a Ghost Type specialist, except that’s a little hard to do when living on the small Dewford Island. His mother doesn’t want him to leave on his Pokémon Journey, and there are no Ghost Types nearby that he could easily catch. His ticket out comes from a discovery made while preparing for an impromptu challenge. Armed with impossible knowledge, Sam aims to head out into the world and take his dreams into his own hands.
The Ghost Specialist mixes the world of the Pokémon anime and games to create a more grounded setting, one perfect for a classic, journey-based Pokémon fan fiction. While a more grounded setting warrants more realistic concerns, nothing about it takes away from the inherent cheerfulness that makes Pokémon uniquely Pokémon. This fiction might contain serious moments, but it is not dark. The Ghost Specialist is simply meant to be enjoyable.
Expect to see a journey across Johto and Kanto, a world set just before Ash Ketchum’s own start, and how modern information (Generation 9+) can be used in a setting with much more limited knowledge. Other than that, you can also expect:
-A weak to strong protagonist.-Late gen evolutions present in an early gen world.-A character that earns his successes.-Friends made along the way.
No growth is immediately handed to Sam. Any development, he needs to work for. The premise of this fiction involves advanced knowledge, but that is still just that: knowledge. For Sam to grow as a trainer, he must figure out how to apply what he learns.
Release schedule: Tuesday / Friday.
Note: This fiction takes place in the same universe as my previous fiction, The Type Specialist, but it is set several years before. No prior reading is required, and there will be little overlap between the two fictions, if at all.

- Zi23Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0It is a great start of a ghost journey and different from other journey as it takes in the know games. But merges it with a unique journey with a different poke dex but is really great read and goes great with the authors way of writing. I have enjoyed reading it and looking forward to more chapters coming.
- BrockMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am really liking just about everything that this story has to offer. The most impressive thing to me is how much foreshadowing there is and just how early it happens. It is really fulfilling to see such a well put together narrative. The characters have depth and change with satisfying character arcs. Looking forward to following this story. Hope that the updates keep coming! Have a great day.
- YeetRay5Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is my first review, and I have been reading on this website for 1.5 years. This is one of the most amazing fanfics I have ever read. The style is amazing, feeling exactly like the Pokemon TV series, with responsible kids, and a fun setting. I have not found a single grammar mistake so far, and the story is also amazing. It makes me want to be in that world, training Pokemon and making new friends. The character feels like he is his age. He acts 14, with a slight impulsiveness, but also starting to be responsible. I love how his "Golden Finger" is not something that is overpowered and acts like a plot device instead of plot armor. It is used as a bonus but only gives knowledge, and the MC needs to learn how to use it and strive for the opportunities it gives him.
I also find it amazing how the author incorporated the lore of Pokemon into the "New Pokedex", as the author is most likely the boy with long sideburns found in the picture, which perfectly describes a young Professor Oak. The girl in the picture is most likely Agatha: This would be interesting, as she too specializes in Ghost-type pokemon. - ZR1LRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Unlike most fanfiction that i've read, this one's a bit different. How you may ask? Easy. The mc is actually a kid going on a journey. We've all been to familiar with a reincarnated man going on a journey to beat up kids and snatch the victory with zero loss whatsoever. This fanfiction feels real. It's not the story of our mc trying to save the world, not about him trying to stop team rocket, but about him becoming a ghost-type specialist. Along his journey, he's going to go through hardships, challenges, defeats, victoty and all sorts of things. He's going to cry, depressed, pressured, but hey, he's a kid. It's part of the charm to see our boy growing up to be a man. The character around him feels so alive. Pokemon create so much emotions. Not to mention the ghost in this fanfiction can actually be scary. I'm not going to spill more about the story cuz i that's enough to make you interested. Give it a try. It's definitely worth your time.
- AJP1914Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0As someone who also loves Ghost types and reading this hoping the Sam gets a Gengar I am loving the story! It starts off pretty slowly but that's how every journey should start. I also like how the author is pulling lore from the most recent sources I cant wait to see Cyndaquil in his Alt Form! love being able to read a journey from the beginning.
- GenPowerEveryNightRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A pokemon story that stands out from the rest. It follows the classic tropes of being entered into the universe with it's own unique twists such as having meta knowledge in the form of an old novel left by the MC's grandfather at the beginning of the story. From this point it transition's into a classic adventure story with lots of unique facets and the MC having the main goal of forming a ghost type team with the assistance of his grandfather's left behind knowledge. The story feels extremely natural without any awkwardness around the trope of meta knowledge, and many realistic scenarios come out of the MC holding more knowledge than he should have, and his goal of trying to find and evolve his team around ghost types never seen before in the region using this knowledge.
The story itself is very charming and leaves you entertained and wanting more. Each character has their own unique personality and the MC and his traveling partner's interactions, as well as their own pokemon's personalities, leave you very satisfied and wanting to read more.
The grammar is very good with minute, if no, spelling mistakes and other forms of 'mistakes' that one could point out. Nothing is overly flushed out to pad the word count and every chapter feels fresh as the MC goes on a realistic journey under a time crunch to make it to the regions championship with his hopefully evolved ghost team.
Overall a very good story that leaves you satisfied and itching for the next chapter. A very good adaptation of a well used trope that has it's own unique charm and elements. Give it a read! - LiteraryWhoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Because there are already way too many great poke-fics out there!
So far, I really like the main character. He seems driven, but not especially "elite" (like, just a guy, really). His "secret advantage" isn't some lame uber-power that only an isekai MC could possible have, and instead is just a little touch of extra knowledge. In fact, it mostly serves as a source of motivation for him to improve.
We haven't seen much in the way of the promised type specialty, so I can't attest to how well the author will bring out the quirks of training ghost types, but he does have a multi-thousand page story about another type of type specialist, so I assume he's learned some things about getting it done in the meanwhile.
Anyway, it's off to a very promising start. Great writing, great characters, great premise. I'm hopeful, but not in the way that I'm hoping, lol. - Error004Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5I love how battle work in this fic, I have read many pokemon fanfics before and most of them have problems with how battles work, some fics only focus on attacks and forget about ability and items, most of times held items are onw that are forgotten, in some fics pokemon became extremely strong extremely fast, being able to battle against pokemon with years of training just after getting few badges. Not only this fic shows logical strength boost for pokemon after training, secondary effects of moves, importance of abilities and held items are also shown in this fic.
- MocchiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5What a great pokemon fanfiction, one of the best I ever read fanfiction in all genres, good plot progression, the execution of the fights are nice, all of the side characters feel alive, his gold finger it's something not so broke, that could destroy the plot.
My only critique for the fanfic is the MC, he just doesn't feel right, his personality just doesn't mesh well for the type of Pokemon he chose to specialize in, he just doesn't embody what you would expect for a ghost type trainer be, you would expect a ghost specialist to be a prankster, playful, smart and confident to train ghost types that has a lot of mischievous pokemon, but he's totally the opposite of this.
It's still a great fanfiction and if you like pokemon, you should totally read this one. - GiveHerTheDuckRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I realised that I read a similar story before, and was amused to find out that the author of this story actually wrote "The Fairy Specialist". Back then I kinda dumped on that story in my review and I'm actually quite happy with "The Ghost specialist" and the authors improvements. The characters have more depth to them, with multiple mystery plothooks woven in. I am actually invested in the fighting, because all the mons and trainers have a personality. So far its only been our mc going through the badge challenge, but this story actually has potential to be great. Personally I believe that some of the move training is too technical (basically copy pasted out of the wiki) for an actual story. I mean, its nice that you are "teaching" your physical mons all the punching moves and your special mons all the special moves for coverage, but it does feel somewhat forced and unnatural. Thunder, Fire, Ice-Punch are not natural progression and it takes away from the story if you literally have every answer to every type you could ever face. It would feel better if you could include a good reason for a move like that to be learned, training montages in pokemon novels such as this feel bad. But maybe thats just me. Still, great improvements compared to your previous work. Keep it up.
Ps: As much as you try to repeatedly drive home that "the spice" that differentiates the mc from everyone else he has encountered so far, is that he has a plan and teamwork ... all of that depends heavily on "the book" and his knowledge about moves and possible synergy. There is not much else that really differentiates him from everyone else he comes across ... we established multiple times over the first 70 chapters or so that he isn't that good at actually training his mons and still he manages to teach them move after move over a timespan of at most 6 month. Stuff like that is always more believable if the mc actually has to face real adversity with real stakes, the badge challenge and a few tou
