- D.M. Rhodes (Razzmatazz)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Games of Slayers: Isekai'd in another as a reaper {Progression & gamelit}, written by author cosmickel, is a quickly escalating, darker toned progression isekai fantasy story that follows Rokun, a man with a simple desire — he wants power.
Rokun is a deeply flawed protagonist, as you will see immediately in chapter one, and then in chapter two… and then in chapter three… and then… (etc etc). But this does not make him a bad protagonist. The premise of the story is exactly that, with the unsettled main-character trying to make it through this new life given the very unusual and rough circumstances shrouding their arrival. (Spiders. Don’t worry about it.)
There is quite a broad cast of characters. The author spares no effort in throwing in a full world’s worth of people your way, but all of them are followable and readable; the characterization leans toward a more active anime personality style.
The grammar and spelling have both been meticulously checked over by the author, having been fixed since the story’s alpha stage. The prose and flow are both in a rather unique format in this story, but they work well to move the reader along.
All in all, if you are looking for a progression story about working one’s way up from the dirt, and don't mind an MC who gets knocked on their bottom a few times (A lot.) to do so, then give this one a fair shot! =) - EuphridiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Both fast-paced and casual dialogue leads to endless, progressive action even as the world-building continues. MC can’t catch a break from all the action and violence - not that we want him to!
Style: I’m a fan of casual dialogue and this story has it. A lot is happening all around, but you can get a sense of the character’s reactions to it. Multiple POV’s are offered but clearly telegraphed so you know whose eyes you’re looking through.
Story: Very fast paced! I trust absolutely no one and I really hope the MC is able to achieve what he wants to do because I’m starting to think he’s going to have to go up against so real terrible antagonists.
Grammar: There are a few minor syntax issues in the older chapters, but none that stop the flow. In the later chapters I didn’t notice anything unusual. A lot of the grammar choices are probably intentional as well since we’re seeing the visceral reactions of characters dealing with wide spread violence that often ends up empowering the ones who commit it.
Characters: I’m honestly not sure who to trust in this story! MC feels relatable – he’s been sent to a world where killing is common, yet he wants to survive. He makes a few choices that will come to haunt him, even if he had good rationale for them. The others he meets all have their own motivations and obligations, making it all the more intriguing if MC will be able to believe their words as he gets of sense of what’s truly going on. I feel for him, but I also have concerns on where he’s going to end up, morally speaking, so you know you can emotionally invest in him. - KinAkira1996Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I think this story has a lot of potential in regards to its story and characters. The premise is the standard isekai affair, but there seems to be a deeper mystery behind Rokun's demise that I think the author does well to hint at. Looking forward to what this story becomes :)
- Tate KingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: The Games of Slayers is a dark progression fantasy with brisk pacing, unrelenting brutality, moral ambiguity, deep worldbuilding, and the promise of a long adventure to come. This story is a wild ride and thoroughly engrossing, despite its flaws. For fans of dark Isekai stories, it's worth checking out.
Style: The story is told through breezy first person narration. Though chapters occasionally switch POV, most of the story is told from the protagonist Rokun's perspective. His voice comes through in the story, full of intense emotion, anguish, regret, and self-loathing. The style of the story is inspired by manga/anime, which works for some people, but may not for others. Sometimes the pace is so intense, with new characters, creatures, and settings flying past in the blink of an eye, it is easy to be overwhelmed. At times I found myself wanting the story to take a breath, here and there, to let the events sink in. But I can say this, you will not be bored.
Story: The story beings as a cozy, almost slice of life tale, until the protagonist's life on Earth is destroyed and he is reincarnated in a dark fantasy world. While I have read a lot of Isekais, the opening to this one is particularly brutal, because the initial state of Rokun's life feels so wholesome, celebrating his birthday with his girlfriend and family in the moments before disaster.
After Rokun is reincarnated he meets a group of reapers, who at first want to kill him before deciding he might actually be a useful ally. The protagonist soon encounters a moral dilemma that I found quite gripping, as Rokun decides whether to save a young girl or himself, as the young girl's mother begs him to help. Rokun is no hero, that much is obvious. He does go back to help the girl, but ultimately fails, and blames himself. This was a lot darker than I expected going into this story, but it really made me think.
While most of us would like to play the hero in this situation, that is easier said t - keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This one is a fun ride! If you're down for a casual, conversation-like feel to a read and a lot of action and emotions, this is the story for you. First, I want to talk about the characters. They drew me in immediately, and made me invested in the story. I cared about what was happening to them which made a huge difference when the action came. And the action DOES come. Things twist very quickly. It goes from a more-so light-hearted beginning to diving into intensity and darkness. I personally enjoyed the contrast and felt it gave the story something extra.
I noticed a few minor grammatical errors but nothing that impacted my reading experience too badly. Honestly, I felt like most of the grammar choices were done stylisticly, and I can appreciate that myself so...
The world that the author builds here is very creative and immersive. I very much enjoyed diving into it with the characters. The chapter lengths are pretty lengthy when compared to other books I've read on RR, but I think the writer pulled them off well and made me want to keep reading despite the longer chunks. If you're into lengthier chapters than this one fits that description perfectly.
Well done to the author! - sour_cigarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A very well written and unique premise for a story.
I love how we get such an insightful look into our MC, Rokun, it feels like a first row seat with his emotions and the inner conflict he's facing as he navigates through the world and troubles around him.
I've seen people mention how difficult it is to write in first person, but the author has done a flawless job. The story only has 11 chapters so far, but it's a promising read and I'm excited to see where the author takes Rokun and the rest of the story, bravo :) - PizzaPizzaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: Embarking on a journey through "The Games of Slayers" is akin to taking a walk on the wild side of the isekai genre. Full of intrigue, action, and a protagonist whose nature is as captivating as it is enigmatic, it's a delight for all fans of isekai, despite a few stylistic hiccups along the way.
Style: The author has taken a bold and unique stylistic approach. The story unravels through an intriguing blend of stream-of-consciousness thoughts, punctuated with intense dialogue. At times, the narrative switch in tenses can be disorienting, causing some disruption in the reading flow. However, it can also be seen as an attempt to keep readers on their toes, ensuring that the story never loses its thrilling edge.
The lack of a smooth flow between internal monologues, dialogue attribution, and descriptive passages may pose a challenge for some readers to keep up with the action. However, the author's use of in-chapter art brings an excellent visual aid to the narrative, offering readers a refreshing and immersive means of experiencing the story.
Story: The plot strikes a compelling balance between intrigue and action, with a fair share of dramatic confrontations and escalating stakes that fans of the genre will appreciate. The protagonist's journey from his original world to the chaotic realm of reapers provides ample opportunity for surprising turns and twists.
The narrative shines with an impressive depth of world-building, hinting at grander schemes and conflicts to come. Readers are promised a wealth of lore to explore as the plot unfolds, which makes the reading experience all the more exciting.
Grammar: In the area of grammar, the story could benefit from another round of editing. The narrative occasionally grapples with tense inconsistencies, which can slightly hinder the flow of reading. However, the story's fascinating premise and enthralling characters are engaging enough to counterbalance these minor drawbacks.
Character: The real charm of "The Games - SilverdawnRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This one really threw me for a loop. I came into a pretty cosy story and all too suddenly realised that was a massive departure from what I truly had on my hands, which turned out to be a lot more sinister!
You can feel that the writer has put time and thought into their world, situation, and circumstance. Everything about this intro tells me that there's a lot to get invested in through this world and a lot of mysteries to uncover. The author certainly has an imagination, and they manage to fuse it pretty effecitvely with the perspective character's narration.
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the main character as of yet, considering the ways he's acted and the choices he's made through the story, but I am holding out and reserving my opinion for now. His voice is fun, though. Visceral emotions are well handled in prose. Dialogue is pretty engaging too!
And then the author even adds their own bits of art to give us ideas of how the characters look, which is a nice touch!
For a debut story, I'd say this is going on the right track, and despite some grammatical issues and perhaps a few things here and there I'd change in prose to make things flow a little more smoothly, I'd say this has to potential to be a fun and engaging read! - JoJoTKobeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The Games of Slayers depicts the story of Rokun, a teen who is mysteriously killed by the unknown machinations of some mysterious being and is sent to a fantasy world. Though his new beginnings in this fantasy world is not easy, much the opposite, its a terrifying and awful experience to say the least.
I really enjoy some of the style of first-person narration here, of interweaving Rokun's thoughts with the narration. Especially for some of the suffering and emotional punches that he experiences so far, that stream of thought method is really great for that. It would be nice however to have some formatting to distinguish his thoughts from the narration, as it can be jarring for someone not used to this style of narration.
The writing needs a bit of proofreading as well, with some grammar and formatting issues here and there. I think with a bit of careful editing and a little rewriting it can polish what this piece has to offer.
And what it has to offer is the journey of this immature teen who is forced to survive in this new, cruel world and fight for his life. I do think Rokun's characterization so far has been pretty good and also leaves room for him to grow.
Would recommend to people who are a fan of isekai stories where the protagonist starts weak and strives to grow stronger. - OkamiDreRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Im not gonna lie there's grammatical errors everywhere, ignoring that though, there's potential in the story and the characters thus far are interesting. Might come back and change my mind if I get 'wowed' . So for now ill read and get to know them, I look forward to seeing where the wild ride takes Rukun and co.
