- ArchyonxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What happen when one day, you wake up as a big Catto? Well, you get some obvious personality troubles, and a loadshit of new magical problems to resolve. Unfortunatly for Thomas, our MC, he aint got time to take things slow, as the timer is already ticking his end., and he don't want to check if the old saying of cats having 9 lives is true.
I ve found myself enjoying the ride, and even if it's not the best read of my life ever, it's quite a good one. The author take us in a fantasy trip, but contrary to a good part of the RR novels, this one is believable and it's make the difference.
Beware that if you are looking for a novel where there is more face-slapping than chapters, where overwhelming powerful cheat hero fight the world and/or a light hearted slice of life novel, this might not be what you are looking for. - Endless PavingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Another good ol' supernatural urban fantasy. A great thing about urban fantasies is they emtend to have quite the accelerated pace when it comes to the introductory chapters, so just 5 chapters now is good enough for me to review a decent bit of plot progression already.
Rest assured the fun stuff already start happening in chapter 2, and the real action gets going in chapter 3 already. There is not a lot of pateience required with this one for getting into it.
Animal transformation stories are a bit uncommon, so it's nice to have another addition. The ones I know of all have the decency of being fictions squarely themed towards the supernatural, so the tend to have cool supeepowers for our entertainment. The story kicks of rapidly with the life ruining introduction to Beyond the Veil, kidnapping to the magical world (cough, Real World cough) happens lile usual in YA, and without the running away from mysterious evil monster people in this case, though it all got started because of a presumable evil mysterious people event where some old dude gets dead and mysteriously suggests that he knows the next chapter is going to happen. Classic mystery distraction to up the action and pcinf while we get through the boring magical world introductory exposition.
The characters are quite good with me counting 4 (post-prologue) in-scene characters introduced briefly and yet distinct enough that I can follow along with their group dynamics immediately. Not all that much character depth at this time, but they sure are recognisable already. They might be slightly attached to archetypes, but I suspect that will just play well into their group dynamics and it leaves enough room for hidden depth when there's time.
Now the story, it's pretty much all implied potential at this point in the story, but I get the feeling it will be a fun little adventure story. Humour might play a big part with the ridiculousness of the animal state of presumably most of what will be the important characte - NewbageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A sympathetic and likeable main character. Deep and thoughtful world building. Interesting magic system. A very novel setting, premise and inciting incident for the main character. Believable character motivations, dialogue, and interactions. The story beats range from funny to dramatic with plenty of laughs, suspense, and action to be had. The writing is professional grade and definitely worth a read.
The only negative I have to say about the story is that the author usually refers to the MC as a cougar. Even he pointed out in an early chapter that this cat species is known by a boatload of names. Yet out of all of them, he chooses the one that brings to mind an older woman who likes to date younger men? The species' scientific name is puma concolor. Just call him a puma, man!
All jokes aside. This is an excellent and outstanding story. The MC gets a raw deal at the beginning of the story and a bunch of douchebag try to take advantage of him. The injustice of his initial situation it might put some people off, but rest assured that the MC eventually overcomes, and does so with style. And watching him struggle and build up to it is highly entertaining.
You should definitely take the time to read it and support the author by buying is books on amazon if you have the financial means to despite all the Covid-19 craziness going in the world at the moment. - SaimanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have to admit I was a bit dubious at the beginning because a story in which the protagonist becomes an animal is a bit strange, but this has been a pleasant surprise.
The character is likable, the world is really well-written and the plot interesting(standard mystery plot).
That said I hope the character will be able to retake human shape before the end... - a_man_in_blackRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This one had me worried when I first started. There are some sorts of stories that have elements I absolutely loathe to an extreme degree. I'm open about this, and extremely critical of it in reviews. I'm not forgiving about it in the least, and I know that rubs people the wrong way sometimes. Those issues that bug me the most are typically when stories muck about with free will or slavery, or run rampant with sexual abuse and other creepy stuff.
Those two topics are not necessarily bad in and of themselves, but painting them in detail on your page without any intent to actually have the story DO SOMETHING about them is either lazy writing or simply a perverted power fantasy that leaves a sour taste in my mouth like fruit juice left too long in the sun and then microwaved to add insult to injury. My issues with other stories are not that they include slavery and mind control, but that they include those things and never address them.
This story avoids that. The main character is definitely the victim of malice and circumstance in the beginning. He doesn't ask to be turned into a mountain lion, and he doens't just ignore all that for the sake of moving the story along like a lot of these types of stories. The whole story hinges upon him fighting for his freedom, trying to make friends while surrounded by enemies, and seeking justice while retaining his humanity even in his new form(which renders him extremely weak to scritches and rubbins!).
Style: Excellent prose. No worries here, the words flow and the dialogue comes easy. It's not so flowery and descriptive as to waste space on the page, but it's a well seasoned background flavor to this meal of words.
Grammar: Perfect. I don't think I noticed a single mistake, although I was into the story well enough to not be looking.
Character: Some things are framed in the typical fashion. People introduced as good may be villainous, but they may not. You also have your typical political dystopia of the powerful running every - K_PakRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is my opinion. This is not an objective review.
The plot is good and original on RR. I like it.
Characters are ok. Main cast is well made, but I would like more depth to side characters.
Grammar is also fine.
My problem is with the style. MC gets himself in bad situations and solves them originally. It is impossible to predict, where the story will go. I like that.
What I dislike is too much chaos. I prefer stories with some developement. Maybe it is deliberate. I would just like some long term goal for MC.
Also I find there is too much action in the story. I miss quiet moments with characters (and not just main characters) talking and adjusting to each other without some arbitrary time clock hanging over their heads.
In my opinion you should read this fiction only if you don't mind fast paced chaos. - StrangeCrestRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I read until Chapter 23 for this review.
While not perfect, overall the story is well written. Definitely higher quality than the usual fair on royalroad. My main problem with ot is two things in particular stop me from enjoying the story.
First, the author does an excellent good job characterizing the characters; he just does jack at to actually let us understand the setting. Everytime the MC tries to get information about this new part of the world he's in the other characters hand wave it any and don't explain anything.
His struggle not to resist joining the TAU isn't compelling. I don't if they are good, evil or a mix of both. I don't know if the MC is being shortsighted or actually the only wise man in a world of fools.
Without knwoing anything about the TAU and Magi society, how powerful it is, how difficult it is to resist, it's history and character, the consequences and dangerous of resistance, and others things besides an exetremely vague notion of 'it's probably bad and is powerful' it causes his struggle to resist it lose meaning and any power to compel making the story boring on top of causing the story to be disorienting because we don't know what is going on.
The second thing is the magic. By Chapter 20 it is clear that magic is going to be a signifigant part of the story but the author's attemts to show how the magic is actually working fall flat. They are a confusing, disorienting mess of writing that I got a headache trying to figure out what was happening and still ended up coming up blank. So instead of eagerly gobbling up what extremely few bits of magic have been throw in the atoey I skip reading them because it isn't understandable or enjoyable. Obviously that is a problem if a very large part of the story is like.
These two issues of not having an understanding of the setting nor a major story element, magic, makes a lot of what is happening lose any ability to make the reader xare about what is going on and invest themselves in the story.
No - rulerhadesRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I wanted to like the story but at this point I'm calling it quits. What point is there sticking around when life has only taken a dump on the main character? So far there have been no situations where I've seen him actually come out ahead of anything the story has thrown at him, and frankly it just isn't any fun to read something like that. The other aspects of the story were done well and enjoyable so if you're able to stick through the rest then I'm sure it will lighten up at some point
- FluueRoyal Road★★ 2.0Spoiler: Spoiler
It starts with the mc waking up in his house as some kind of tiger. An overtalkative squirrel spots him and sends a message to a mage or somthing, a magic grandma comes in and treats him like an animal which is kinda an asshole move considering she knows he's a person inside. She constantly calls him 'kitty' and stuff. It doesn't help that the mc is apparantly very moody, constantly either angry, having an inner monologue or cowering in the corner. She also keeps saying 'dearie' which really annoys me. If you can get passed all this then you'll probably enjoy it.
4.5 The grammer's good, almost no mistakes.
2.5 So far I haven't gotten to any real story, I stopped at chapter 8 so I'll give it a neutral score
3.5 The style would be fine if the mc wasn't constantly talking about everything he sees in annoying detail.
TD;LR
Mc turns into tiger and proceeds to act like a moody teenager. The person temporarily taking care of him is annoying and rude (maybe she's supposed to be hated?)
Overall I like the squirrel the best.
Perhaps it gets better later in the chaps but I just cringe everytime the mc talks.
I'm shit at writing reviews but I try :|
