The Forgotten Guard (Noctis 5)

Description
The Noctis mansion is death’s home and a haven for supernatural creatures. It’s used to strange visitors and strange requests—but this is the first time that anyone has asked to borrow Kappa, the two-foot-tall bog-monster that has lived with Big Jacky for years.
Benjamin Gladwyn is the mayor of a small town in Louisiana. The bog-monsters that live in the neighboring Sauvage Preserve have started invading the town at night. No one knows why they’re doing it or how to stop them, but if they aren’t stopped soon, the secret of their existence will be exposed to the increasingly paranoid townsfolk. Since Kappa can speak, he might be the link the Torr needs to work with the colony.
But Emerra Cole isn’t about to let Kappa head out into a strange swamp alone, and Big Jacky doesn’t trust Emerra to keep herself out of trouble, so they ask the wolfman, Conrad Bauer, to help.
When Conrad, Emerra, and Kappa go down to Fort Rive, they find a town full of rumors and a swamp haunted by the weight of its own secrets. They have to learn what’s going on before things go from bad to catastrophic.

- Aaron NelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoy these stories.
The writing is fantastic. The characters have depth. There interactions and interesting and flow through the story so naturally. It's so easy to get lost in these stories, eagar to find out what is going to happen next.
Can't wait to read more of the great works coming from RK Goff - RandomNEETGuyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If I'm being honest, this book started as a slog for me, despite having loved the previous four. The premise of Kappa's people and the rude-ass mayor was not an inviting combo, but Conrad tagging along kept the hope.
The central mystery this time is quite intriguing, but it's all wrapped up in rednecks, so it was a bit painful to extract it. But by the last 10-15 chapters, things took a turn for the better and I found it fun and interesting how the Chekhov's guns kept going off one after another.
The new characters(the important ones) were quite fun, and I feel like almost every one of them got their due resolutions.
Learning some Native americans lore was not on my bingo card, but it was also a really interesting part of the book.
I think we got to see a fair bit more and deeper of Emerra Cole(both powers and person-wise) than before, but unfortunately little of that got addressed. Maybe next time. If the author is to be believed, we thankfully have a lot of books to look forward to.
I'll stop rambling. Overall, I can only recommend this book, and encourage anyone who's reading it to give it some time to get rolling. - RuefulRespiteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As book 5, I think everybody reading knows what they want and generally what to expect. And this one delivers just exactly that.
The mysteries of the swamp and the tension of the small town are done really well, and it gives The Forgotten Guard a suspenseful backdrop as the story unfolds. This one definitely feels a bit higher stakes, and it's fascinating to see our protagonists rise to the occasion.
As always, our main cast (primarly Emerra, Kappa, and Conrad this time) are a joy to follow. The new characters have a lot of wonderful options to fall in love with. And, as always, the mystery and pay-off exceed the installment that came before it.
A real hidden gem on this website, to be sure. - RavenStrongSORoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5After a bit of a stumble in book 4, the Noctis series makes a roaring return to form with a combination of mystery/adventure in rural Louisiana. A colorful cast of characters, good pacing in the action, great character moments. Could've possibly used a bit of a deeper mystery but the twists that are there are, once again, well paced and make sense within the story.
