- LightChaserRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Noelle, the protagonist, is wonderfully crafted as a young woman caught between her duties and desires. We see her growth through her interactions with those closest to her—her father, Godfrey, Laney, and others—as she faces the realities of leaving home. There's a balance of strength and vulnerability in Noelle that makes her relatable. Early chapters introduce her as someone with both confidence and uncertainty, and by this chapter, we can feel the weight of responsibility settling on her shoulders. Her internal struggle is apparent as she prepares for her journey, from choosing what to carry to asking Godfrey and Laney to look after her father, showing her deep care for those she loves. Her relationship with her father is especially poignant; there's a quiet strength in their bond, made all the more emotional as they part ways.
Her resolve to complete her journey and return home within a set time frame adds a layer of determination and maturity. Her journey, both literal and metaphorical, is only beginning, and readers can expect Noelle to undergo significant personal growth as she encounters the challenges of the road ahead.
The world Noelle inhabits is rich with details that add depth to the narrative. From the descriptions of her bedroom to the interactions at the caravan, the setting is alive with nuances that show the world is vast and filled with history. The caravan journey introduces new aspects of the world, such as the mention of dangerous beasts, the Talor Crucible, and the subtle class distinctions between those traveling with her. The way the caravan and its leader, the Quartermaster, are described gives a sense of structure and safety for the travelers, but also hints at the dangers they will face, especially as they near the Crucible.
The introduction of a professional, structured system within the caravan, with guards and a Quartermaster, hints at a world where travel and adventure are not only hazardous but require a level of preparation and expe - LouigoasRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Great story with solid characters and good intra-personals dynamic representation.
The pace is gentle and peaceful at first, allowing you to get to know the characters before slowly increasing in chapter
The style is consistent, properly spaced most of the time ( but that is more me nitpicking than anything else). But sometime I feel that some line/sentences were made to be either narration or thoughts but end up as the other.
The story is, as of chapter 15: chef's kiss: It starts with a good premise ( if a bit classic, but classic is good), with relatable family dynamics and vibes. Doesn't feel forced or rushed but still has ways to hook you into it. 10-11 (which make sense, story wise. But a great tempo nonetheless.)
Grammer is good, a bit wonky, but those mistakes feel more like a vengeful auto-correct or a missing apostrophe from writing fast. Overall good, and non problematic whatsoever.
Characters are solid, coherent with their context and relatable with what we know of them. There's only 15 chapters as I am writing this review ( still 55k words, according to the author), only time will tell how they will evolve from here.
TLDR: It's good, I am having fun reading it. And there's a high chance that you will too if the synopsis caught your attention. - Ruat CaelumRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Great story with compelling universe and world building. The relationships feel real and everyone, including side characters, feel real. While there are some plot-hole errors, they are very tiny things like a kid having the class "pickpocket" or the like.
Small details give away that the author has thought through the world building. Example: The man inspecting the wagons doesn't want to waste the 30 seconds it would take to stick his head in each wagon, so everyone has to stand outside.
We are thrust into the "Action" about as fast as you could hope while getting a bare sketch of the world and powers in it. As well as the limits: E.g. purples are rare! etc.
I'm looking forward to the political / social aspect to the story once she gets out the situation she's been thrust into. I have a feeling that dying might have been better for her family and that while she might gain power and magic, those aren't going to help her in social and political situations. She's going to shift from surviving by stabbing things to tea parties and having to choose her words carefully.
I'm hooked and very excited to see her both survive what she assumes is the worst situation she could ever be in and possibly get thrust into a social or political situation that is worse.
Great foreshadowing with the chess-clone game. She can react quickly, but she's not a long term planner. I expect she'll excel in the chaos she's trapped in but once back in the wider world will struggle with the plans within plans aspect of nobility and social circles.
I'd give this one a read, appears to be well worth your time.
Technically has some stat screens but not too much. I also listen to this story with a text->speech program, and the author has either been keeping that in mind or been lucky. This is a good one to listen to.
