The First War Mage: Hammers In The Deep

Description
Berinia, a kingdom defined by its magic, and ruled by its 'Arcadians' who make up the noble families of the nation. Arcadians are born with magic in their very blood, known as 'mana', within the capitol of Berinia the city known to most in the world as 'Arcadia' sits a school for these mages to be. The name of this school? Silver Sky.
Yet, I'm not an Arcadian. Not even close, I'm a formerly wanted, recently captured criminal. In fact, one of the most wanted in the short history of the young kingdom. My name? Kirin Vulender. My crime? Being the daughter of the most wanted criminal in history.
Yet when I turned sixteen everything changed. The guards at the prison, pure blooded Arcadians, began to notice something wrong with me. My blood held mana, not only that, it held alotmore mana than should have been possible. Even the High Nobles, and Royal Family themselves solemnly saw a child as gifted as I was. And now? I've been given a choice. Join Silver Sky, and become a mage under the banner of the kingdom, or a death sentence, a final punishment for the bloodline of the most wanted man the planet ever saw. I didn't have much choice, yet it still feels wrong to my very core.

- EpicNinja69Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m giving five stars, not because it’s a perfect story, but because anything below a 4.2 is a net negative on the algorithm. This story certainly doesn’t deserve that.
The book is quite cozy. A bit of a return to the more traditional fantasy genre (although it’s still clearly a power fantasy), but it isn’t another one of those “fantasy but… ” stories, which I find is quite refreshing.
the characters are charming, even if the protagonist Kirin goes from an apathetic, girl whose been in jail her whole life, to someone more spirited fairly quickly without a real turning point. But I can understand why the decision was made.
everyone in the surrounding cast has a fairly dynamic personality, although the female archmage (I’m forgetting her name as I write this) seems different to how she was portrayed in book 1.
i like the direction that the story is going, some of the world building seems a bit forced, mostly coming through Kirin rapid firing questions, although it’s forgivable because it works plot wise.
My favourite thing about the book really, is that Kirin doesn’t have some super special element or anything, and she is still very much an underdog, even if she is gifted.
i think the visions and lineage story arcs (as we’ve seen so far) are excellent. It’s something you get in regular books, but I haven’t really felt in royal road, which is refreshing.
My favourite thing about the book, at least actual writing wise, is that none of the dialogue felt forced, it’s all very natural which lots of smaller authors tend to struggle with.
Overall?
A comfortable fantasy read, loveable characters, and a good return to tradition.
yes, there are rare errors or rookie writing mistakes, but the genuine feel from the book more than makes up for it.
would recommend.
