- AkinueRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good character and world-building, and now that we've hit the crux of what the main character will do, at the end of volume one. I am excited to see where it goes in the second volume. There is a bit of mystery as to why callings occur in the world, which might tie into underlying themes of state and religion.
- Groovybee05Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Very very nice. I'm intrigued by what else is to come. Keep up the great work! Bananas banana cream pie with cream and cheese frosting is good and the best I can make a reservation and then I'd be happy to come over to my house to see you and then you could just take me out there and I will do that for tomorrow morning I will miss it and then you have a great question. - PakkoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've really enjoyed this story for its explanations of the magic, the world, and it's systems. The characters are all great and have a unique enough way of speaking and all have different personalities. The grammar and readability are great and I can get through the chapters without feeling like stuff is going slowly even if I were to binge the chapters that might be the case. Just overall it is a great story and I really appreciate it.
- YaibaToKenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I can confidently say that this has been the most enjoyable read I've had in the last 5 years. At the current point in the story we've been given a good understanding of our main characters, their worlds and points of view and their motivations.
The world building was done at a pleasant pace, and the reader left with a well defined picture or what surrounds our characters as the story unfolds.
The last couple of chapters have given us a rather rapid development on the plot, and I personally feel that we're finally on track to see the characters growing, and us growing alongside them.
Here's to a continuation of that and more! - alara_elyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read this before, my first book that I've read actually in Neovel, then later the site is under maintenance and just a few years after, I get curious about it again and decided to search it up, surprisingly, now its on amazon and is out on this app, immediately downloaded it ro reread, currently startinn again but I still forgot the last chapter I was in when I first read it. But I finished it and was just waiting for the next update. About the book, I really loved it, the world building is awesome. The concepts are really interesting for me and the characters were well written. Really sad for the mother to die fast though but yah! Highly recommend this for those who want actual world building :))
- lemurianxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pros: Fast update, Fresh world, Worldbuilding feels worth waiting for.
Cons: Characters are decent, but some feel worthless. MC's and character's background logic seems to go with the author's flow, could've liked it if some extra thoughts went into that as well.
Final thoughts: Good story! Definitely worth reading and hope the author maintains the same update rate. - mcarandang2Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reading it has been a pleasure, excited to see how the main character develops and the interesting relationship he had with his calling. Political factions and intrigue are definitely a fun part about reading the plot and the magic system will be interesting to see how it plays out.
The mystery and suspense is well done! - C.G.SilvaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really like how this author introduces everything! Feels so smooth and at the same time, the reader gets so much information about the main character in this first chapter that you probably already care for him if you're reading this. I definitely do.
I feel like I'm cheering for him already. It feels like he is going to die for something that he was misinterpreted for! Don't kill the first mage, people! Don't do it!
I love the style! Is light to read, yet very well thought. This author has an interesting way of describing things that somehow make me want to know more as I read.
Sometimes the author can repeat the same words closely, but that's not a problem really, it doesn't happen that often.
I want to know more about the world! I mean, is he really the first mage? But his grandmother passed this magic book down to him, was she not able to do magic as he does? I feel like magic is not that common in this world and I want to know why. I feel like the author is going to expand the universe in an interesting way, can't wait to see where this is going! - celiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I simply enjoy this story, a lot. It doesn't overwhelm me with lotsa infodump, instead it takes me thru the happenings and knowledge regarding the world one at a time, as the MC experiences it himself.
The story so far has that vibe of 'MC against the world', and I'm liking it. It's not very apparent at first, but the vibe gets stronger as the plot progresses.
But yeah, I could see where a few things could be improved. For example, it feels like more depth regarding the other parties (king and high priest) could grant a bit more oomph and enrich the worldbuilding.
But hey, I'm a sucker for the 'two minds in one body' trope. So this story pleases me no matter where the author will take it. - luda305Royal Road★★★★ 3.5It reminds a bit of "The Giver." A suppressive, autocractic small government. Dangerous wilds. A teen coming into a strange power.
I can definitely agree with a lot of folks that he's a bit of an idiot, even within the boundaries of his world and how he's described. That said, I think others are a bit harsh on it. He's a teenager and he feels like one.
Dialogue can be stiff at times, especially for non protagonists.
I'm unclear whether or not he actually is a mage. Which seems like false advertising.
It is pretty slice of life-y. YA fantasy vibes, obviously.
UPDATE (from ch. 32 to 40):
To begin, I'd like to give kudos for the author for still going. I had put this aside at 32, but now the author is all the way past 90! Good show.
That said, I picked it up again, but I couldn't really get into it. To give a little more color, it really does read like a YA fantasy novel, meaning that it's target audience is preteens reading about a teenage protagonist. With that comes things like an overly simplified world, stupid adults, and extreme naivety.
It's hard to imagine at times that the powers that be are as stupid as they are portrayed and never figured out magic before. Of course, there is always a first, but usually the first doesn't come after centuries (millenial) of access to semi-magical objects.
It's also hard to like the protagonist. I'll dial back my comment above about he feels like a teenager: He often times comes across as a young kid (say, 8 years old) when he should be a teen (say, 16 years old). It often feels like he isn't the protagonist and instead is one of those "wish it to be happen and it'll come true" types. I'm not saying he shouldn't be trusting, which he is, but rather he lacks fundamentals, like how money works or where meat comes from. And then, very often, things work out just perfectly in the end for him as he seemingly stumbles forward into the plot (very Gary Stu). As to the magic, the voice in the head often feels more like the ac
