- pattyloofRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I enjoyed story this very much. A unique premise, a likable main character, and lots of adventure - with twists I didn't see coming. Heartwarming and funny at times. A really interesting story well worth reading.
Some of the side characters were a bit two-dimensional, which is the only reason I didn't give it five stars. - BinaryApotheosisRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The Final Star opens strong with alien faces, camaraderie, and a sense of the inevitable end. However, everything feels a bit too human.
SPAG-wise, this story is solid, if not better-than-average for a webnovel. There are a few clunky sentences or places that run into another, but none of the mess that is painfully common. All the essentials have been met, and the SPAG serves its purpose of not being noticed. Of all the things to be unremarkable, spelling and grammar are definitely the best.
Character-wise, the story feels almost like it's holding back, of all things. Right from the very beginning we've got aliens front and center, up to and including the MC. The inhuman features are nice to see, but the actual personalities themselves all feel too ordinary. It's understandable—writing familiar, human characters is hard enough on its own, much less alien ones. Trying to figure out how an alien would think and feel, what it would value and dismiss, and how it would behave are difficult feats. Right now they ironically feel very human. Normally not a bad thing, but in this particular case is a shame considering how much opportunity there is to go wild.
In a similar vein, there are a few small continuity issues, like the MC describing their lack of blood in CH3, but then how "blood felt like glue" in CH5. Nothing major, but the ideas and expressions reinforce the feeling that the characters were written as humans and then merely had their appearances tweaked.
Overall, I think the story has the potential to really shine by taking the reins off its characters and diving in to what makes them truly alien. With a few tweaks, there's an entire universe to explore.
