    For a short story, understanding character dynamics and their relationship to one another is important. They should be obvious and not need an entire piece to reveal basic information. This short story purposely avoids making the distinction and that sows significant confusion in the reading. Some lines are misleading, but I am not sure if that is intentional. The fact that basic information is concealed is frustrating. It is also frustrating that the focus of the story became not the author's intended point - but instead the personal issues between flat characters. Instead of resolving it with what could have been no-name soldiers or a no-recognition situation, a bunch of extraneous dialogue and distractions get in the way of what could have been a good conclusion.
