Description

Trist will be the strongest knight of the age... so long as he keeps sending souls to the Faerie King.Trist's older brother, Percy, was better than him at almost everything - except for swordplay.  Percy was their father's heir, and Trist was perfectly content with his future as a Knight of Narvonne, supporting his brother and protecting their family's land.

In a single night, a beautiful faerie of the Court of Shadows shatters everything Trist took for granted.

Now an Exarch, Trist must Tithe souls to  Auberon, the Faerie King.  Trading those souls grants Trist power, and he'll need it.  Three Hundred years ago, an ancient evil nearly destroyed humanity in a Cataclysm.  Now, that evil is rising again, and Trist will have to confront it if he wants to protect the people he loves. What to Expect:- MC starts off exceptionally skilled, but not otherwise more powerful than a normal human.  He will gradually gain power as the story progresses.

A lot of prospective authors are absolutely enamored with world-building. You can see it on /r/fantasywriting and all the other forums where people worry endlessly about the feasibility of their magic systems and alternate histories. The vast majority of those people don't have the writing chops to back their ideas up.
Because of this, I was actually a bit worried when I saw the length of the glossary and the calendar system. Kind of ironic that a well-developed world has become a red flag for me.
But this story is incredible. Not only does it blow most other worlds out of the water with its sheer depth (and the author cites his real-world inspirations, which I love), the writing is masterfully done. It feels kind of ridiculous to even rate it for grammar; the prose is far above the level where that is a concern. There's a musicality and knack for language that beats out a lot of trad-published works.
Character work and plot are awesome too. But I was just so blown away by the level of polish that I mainly had to rave about that.

I'd give six stars if that was an option.
Because there's a difference between a creatively written story the reader enjoys, and a creatively written story with such a strong background of authenticity that it sucks you in and you lose the ability to put it down.
This story draws you in from the beginning, and the feeling of the world is so complete and so foundational and deeply engaging that you'll keep reading it too.
It isn't action packed, though there is action, but it is story packed... there's just so much... that happens... and it's messy. And real. And complicated. And kind of dark. But not like evil dark, just like life dark...
I've got this terrible habit of reading an authors first five chapters and moving on, I'm always looking for a gem to get stuck into, and to be fair I probably judge too quickly, but as at now I'm at Chapter Twenty Four of The Faerie Knight and I'm only just pausing for a breath.
Story, Character, grammar, style, all five stars.
The sixth star would be for readability, background research, depth, authenticity and for continually and unfairly manipulating my emotional state.
    It's sensational.
Thanks David Niemitz, and keep writing.

Best story I have read  in a long time! Well written and intriguing. I am trying to pace myself so I don't have to wait for new material, but I can't help myself! I have to know what happens next! Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching you grow and excel as an author!

I've read a lot of stories that involve faeries as main or supporting characters. Oftentimes they aren't well distinguished from human characters. I was glad to find that this wasn't the case in this story. In my opinion Fae should be mysterious, whimsical, and possess a moral axis that is different from our own. The author captures that well in the opening chapters of this story, making the fae believable as a member of a different people.
Story: This story has an interesting structure. It begins with a divided narrative. One half of the story is recounting events from when the protagonist was younger, and one is set in the 'present day'. Eventually these threads converge, but I appreciated the format as a way to get right into the meat of the story without spending several chapters on a slow burn of background information. The actual narrative is quite interesting, revolving around the protagonist's relationship with a mysterious girl that lives in the forest near his father's estate. It has some classic tropes of medieval fiction - Arranged betrothals, forbidden love, a younger brother protagonist with a chip on his shoulder. But these are tropes for a reason, and including fae as a pivotal focus to the plot make them fresh.
Character score: I've already commented on how believable the fae are as, well, fae. I'll let that stand and focus on the other characters here. Trist is believable as a protagonist, and he exists in a richly detailed world filled with friends, family, and loyal retainers. There isn't much to say about well written characters, but the author does an excellent job portraying Trist's history with the people he interacts with. These characters aren't props in a story, but rather are part of a world that seem to exist outside what is written on the page.
Grammar: I have few complaints about the grammar of this story. I have yet to spot a spelling mistake or major issue, the work is well edited. The one thing I would change about this story is the

From the world building to the character writing. From the prose to the pacing. Almost everything is perfect.
It is very rare that a story on Royal Road is this consistently good. I've only read a few chapters but their length and quality makes me confident in what is to come.
This may just take the cake as the single most underrated fiction on the entire site. Hopefully that changes for the better in the future.

    This is an amazing book.
In fact, I have a problem finding praises which will be both appropriate and non-insulting towards other warks on RoyalRoad- mine included.
So, First I will do the rating, necessary for advanced review, and then I will tell you about my thoughts.
Style- Interesting, stylish- but may be hard to read for people without much experience in English, or reading MTLs. Or in other words, it's hard to follow if you don't have a massive English vocabulary, or can't deduce the meaning from the context.
Grammar- I can't really, discuss this. You will probably find more mistakes in this one review than in the whole book.
Story- Believable, promising and interesting. The idea about the plot forms in my(reader's) mind from the very first chapters, then shatters and is forged anew, not from some scraps mixed with mud, but from the idea I had before. It is all logical(as much as a fantasy story can be) and falls seamlessly into place.
Character- They feel alive, as much as a bunch of letters can.
Overall- It's one of the best stories I read, and probably the best I have read on RoyalRoad.
Now, my messed up thoughts after binge-reading.
The world is full of resemblances and references, connected to different books and stories, even at the same time. For example, I thought a bit of "Elden Ring", but in that case, the author actually referenced "Keats’ La Belle Dame Sans Merci". And I honestly have no idea what it is.
Apart from, that, while reading I thought of "The Witcher"- Wild Hunt, mystical creatures and the cataclysm, "The Song of Roland(fr. La Chanson de Roland)"- obviously, Knightly ideals and sacrifice.
Also, just history, but kind of reversed. Instead of European-like countries crusading the southern, "pagan" nations, roles have changed around. That doesn't mean that either of them is right though, just like in history.
Well, that's all I had to say, have a nice read!

This book is very much taking from medieval folklore in a high fantasy way. I really like that it fills out the vague powers from old tales and fables and turns them into actual powers, more easily grasped in their effects, turning a story akin to an old tale into a more modern high fantasy work.
I'm also a big fan of roman style stuff in general so I enjoy the pre chapter blurbs from the *not roman* empire that preceded the medievaly inspired kingdoms and polities now populating the setting.

The story is pretty much superb, but oddly enough, I never saw this one in trending star, nevertheless, with that out of the way, let's get to the pros and cons of the story, despite the fact that I don't find too many cons on this story as far as I am concerned with.
So, style-wise, the story is pretty much readable, and it flows really well. I don't see any hiccup in terms of story-telling, nor I see anything that is disturbing in regards to the reading experience overall. There's no any significant oddity as well, so for now, I'll give this one a 5.
Story is superb. I like the dynamics between one character and another alongside with the interaction with the worldbuilding itself, it's pretty expansive to be honest.
Grammar. There isn't any glaring mistake on the grammatical side of things, I find nothing that disallows me from understanding the context of the story that is being written, nor I find anything that is glaring or very obvious. Maybe, if I turn on my editing eyes, I will find one or two, but so far, I didn't find any during my reading experience.
The characters are all three-dimensional with their own quirks and features, and I don't see any glaring weakness that will be troubling.

This is the first Fae book I've ever read, and I have to say I'm blown away!
    Grammar
Grammar was great and I didn't notice any issues so a 5 from me
    Style
The authors style stands out in this book! The way they describe scenes to the way they break between time zones. The author has a very unique way of writing that is verbose and descriptive. Each scene feels fleshed out and carefully written. Clearly this is someone who puts a lot of thought into what they put on paper. I also loved the references to songs and the inclusion of lyrics.
The paragraphs are good and long. The only thing I can really add is this book may be a bit difficult to read for some, it reminds me of classics like wuthering heights kind of!
    Story
The story here is great. The author is simultaneously giving us scenes from both the present and past in the initial chapters. I found myself thinking about the book even when I wasn't reading it as I wanted to uncover more about what was going on with the story so this gets a 5 star from me. It strikes the right balance between having conflict, but relaxing and enjoyable to read.
    Characters
Characters are by far my favourite part of the story so far. I like Tristan, and I absolutely adore Linette. Each character fits their archetype well I feel like and the author does an amazing job at making you understand and empathise with each character along with what they are going through. The interactions are dynamic, and misunderstanding along with unfortunate circumstances create great points of conflict that kept me hooked while reading.
    Overall
I highly recommend this book. It takes me back to days when I read more westernised fantasy books and honestly this is a story I'm going to keep reading. A 5 stars from me!

The Faerie Knight is a very interesting story. It starts of with a lot of mystery with the MC going on a fantastical mission, being confronted by various challenges. The author makes use of alternating perspectives to slowly and simultaneously introduce the MCs past, while he's shown to be going through his adventure in the present. This allows us to slowly understand and relate to the MC, while being led by the mystique of his adventure and the various questions raises throughout the narrative, "Why is the MC here?" "What is he doing?" "What happened to him" etc.
Grammar: There are a few grammar mistakes here and there, nothing that significantly detracts from the reading, but the story could benefit from more proof reading and utilising grammar checking tools.
Style: It's generally written very well and interestingly. Personally it is a bit too descriptive for my liking as I find stories which have a lot of descriptive and poetic language everywhere to make it difficult to understand and visualise what's going on, especially with the special terminologies and atypical names used in the story. Furthermore, the story could probably benefit from breaking apart larger paragraphs into smaller ones, as that is something else which can make it difficult to read, especially combined with the previous two points.
Character: The focus has been on the MC who has been developed really well, showing his past, his relationships, and more. The other characters are also developed, with their own and different personalities. All in all, this is really good imo.
Story: Overall, the general storyline and plot seems quite interesting to me. I also like the use of poetry in the stories, which I feel adds a layer of depth and mystique to the story.
Overall, I think the story is quite interesting with a lot of potential, and I can see that the author is trying to create a really large and epic tale of the MCs adventures. Definitely worth checking out.
