- Luca DRRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I would have never, had someone asked me about it even two hours ago, guessed that i could read about a sentient iceberg discovering the wonders of the natural world with awe and passion like i did. But i did it and i do not regret a single moment of it. It's just so interesting and cool to see the world from the perspective of a newly awakened dungeon core, portrayed like a child, as the child they are. The wonder and discovery is moving.
plus, i think that author did a great job about giving the child common sense as needed through the dungeon core. It's a cool gimmick that feels perfectly fine in the context of the world it's written into and that avoids useless wordiness and dead beats. It's very clever.
Now, 4.5 stars across the board. Why? Well, so far i have read 7 chapters of exploring an iceberg, and no matter how interesting that is it's surely among the slowest starts i have read so far. It's good, it's moving and interesting, but not a whole lot happens. Also, i felt like some of the descriptions and ways things happen were a bit confusing to me, but perhaps it's just the way I'm used to fantasy that skews my opinions. I didnt really understand the whole strings of mana thing being used to manipulate the environment until much later than they were introduced, and while i know it's my mistake, i also feel like the author did not really help make things clear there.
all the while, on other things the author seems to lose themselves in descriptions a bit. It's a unique style, you either like it or hate it, and from some comments i saw that it's a bit of a habit for the author. Not to say it's bad, but it's something you should know beforehand.
all in all, a good dungeon core story. I am not very familiar with them - the last one i read was like three years ago - but i think this one hold up very well. Thumbs up! - Rowing SaylorRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The novel is not a rewrite, just keeping the premise of a core on an iceberg, main downside is no penguins yet.
The good: The story has lots of fun new creatures, all the things you love to learn about in a dungeon core novel. The premise is unique, core on an ice berg, and that is used well. Love some unique settings. The protagonist is pleasant to read about. The protagonist is a dungeon child, (ice iceberg baby) which is a new version to me. All the characters seem fairly logical in their actions. I do want to focus on how the premise is novel and how it is done well. I enjoy seeing the evolutions of creatures that aren't normally done, not just bears and rabbits, and this novel has loads of that. The evolutions are pleasant. There are also chapters to refresh you on what creatures there are so you don't need to find the chapter it was first shown, there are also map chapters so you don't need to try visualizing it in your head.
The bad: There is some editting needed but who on RR is perfect? There is a decent amount of alternate PoVs in the story which can throw you off. Hard to fully know how much time is passing between events, which makes sense when a dungeon probably doesn't care or carry a watch. Things go maybe too smoothly for the dungeon, finding lots of what they need, but this is just the beginning of the story and it is more a slice-of-life than an adventure story. so may not be a flaw. In my mind it's just minor issues so far.
The ugly: "Hi", the ugly is me.
