- mikotoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's not without fault, but so far The dissident wants to be a hero is an interesting read and I'm curious to see where it goes. In alot of ways this reminds me of isekai, but it isn't. The magic system seems cool. Update: I think it's really good so far. There's a lot of questions to be answered, but each chapter has left me wanting more. Safe to say I'm a fan.
- Classy@SwordpointRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: As an older generation fantasy reader, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the organic feel of this story within a more modern setting. The use of magical devices felt cool and interesting, and sent my imagination on a nice ride. The setting feels fresh, and the underlying theme regarding what it means to be a hero in this world, and how the concept of heroism is perceived, is thoughtful and on point.
Style: This story is a breath of fresh air in terms of style. The author has a knack for being efficient and purposeful with their communication, which lends to a clean, and crisp result. The author employs an engaging and fast-paced delivery, while at the same time, the content never comes across rushed or scant. A tricky balance and I'm impressed!
Grammar: I wasn't able to find any issues that weren't minor/haven't already been addressed, and nothing that impedes the experience.
Story: There's never a dull moment in the telling of this tale! The plot feel tight and well thought out, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes us.
Character: I felt easily invested in each of the characters we meet - good or bad, and all those in the middle. Each feels as though they have their own lives off the page. Fey in particular I resnoated with from the beginning, and the interactions between the family members in particular are my favourite - especially Fey and Kyla. - CloudfallRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Cover: A captivating cover. It makes me want to open the pages without even reading the synopsis.
Synopsis: Well written. It really displayed what the book is all about without disclosing too much. It draws a potential reader in.
Grammar: Excellent. No error that could affect the flow of the story.
Story: The plotline is based on Fey who couldn't sense mana after he was born in a country known as Vania. This is a place wherepowerful heroes battle monsters. This high fantasy novel is going to be a mixture of adventure, action and magic. From what I've read so far, the story is progressing really well.
Style: First person narration. We are able to see the world through the eyes of the MC. Well used by the author.
Characters: So far, they're well written. The main character, Fey, has great expressions that put more life into the book. So far, so good.
Overall: Great work by the author. (Go Fey!) - Bpoole2019Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has a great cast of intricate characters that all seem to have their own problems and personalities. I love how the story is told through their different points of view to show different things unfolding. As the plot goes on, the mystery gets deeper. Give this a read, you won't regret it!
- LlamaLlumpsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Magic and science, science and magic, gotta love two great flavors swirled together. We have a few well handled POV and timeline shifts, even a flashback to a dream sequence, all neatly managed.
Just sit back and take a ride, this sheep knows where the best grazing is. Just follow the flock to an interesting new pasture.
Some of you may look at my handle and say... "LlamaLlumps? is reviewing BlackSheep?" and assume some sort of wooly witless cartel is trying to turn this into a knitting circle... not so. Full disclosure I do Know this fine sheep, but the story is what we are here to discuss, and it is a good one. - MaerBearRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Wow. This story is easy to read and fun. I honestly stay away from stories with modern-ish settings/technologies most of the time, but the way this was executed is just plain enjoyable. I highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for a bit of action grounded in solid character arcs and worldbuilding.
Style- Evocative and engaging without being overly wordy or dense. Very easy/smooth reading experience. Leaving 1/2 a star off because there is room for improvement in subtle ways, but nothing that detracted from my enjoyment. Definitely in the higher tier of what is on RR.
Grammar- Only the occassional typo or strange sentence. Again, top tier of RR. It is clear Black Sheep puts real effort into cleaning and refining his story.
Story- Admittedly, I'm not that far in, but I feel invested in the story so far. Will update in that changes.
Character- Haven't met a flat character, even the ones who are only glimpsed feel like they have some depth. Helps me feel more invested in the events of the story.
Great Job! Thanks for the words!
Oops, I'm missing some words... But I said my peace already, or is it said my piece? Who knows... - Void PacifistRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The plot of this story is pretty common after all it's basically a world with superheroes and monsters except the powers come from magic still common. But the way it is executed is what makes this story good it's interesting, mysterious, and fun, not a masterpiece but still very nice.
But I have one major problem the story doesn't follow itself in at least one that I observed near the start Fey watches Pyro fight a black dragon but later on, he says that dragons are supposed to be extinct. If the last remaining dragon were killed in front of so much media you would think there would a bit more of a reaction. Though to fix the problem the author could just change the black dragon with a wyvern or a drake.
Still the story is good. - FieryGalladeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is an example of a competent written work. While it may not be the most unique story you've ever seen, it does include a lot of mystery, character development, and clever ideas. The inclusion of all of these results in a story which keeps its audience guessing. And, there are a lot of things to make guesses about, as worldbuilding is a rather large part of the story. In addition, most of the characters, be they main characters or nameless goons, are written fairly well. I'm not giving a 5/5 score yet, as the storyline itself hasn't really presented anything particularly unique. As of right now, all of the various plots have been generic enough for me to compare them to other media. Though, that might change with future chapters. Speaking of...
