I admit when I say I had way too much fun with this story than I should. Without spoiling anything major, the story is told through the diary of Matis Carignan during the time when he discovered what he dubs “the Sound”.
    Grammar/Style:
There isn’t anything wrong with style that I can recognise. There are moments in the narrative that make me pause a few times where I have to stop a few times to figure out what the author meant. Other than that, it isn’t a big issue.
    Characters:
The characters do come off as one-dimensional. This isn’t a problem but a feature of this story. The reason I say this is because it is written as a diary from one person’s POV. So, you can imagine the characterisation of others besides Matis isn’t going to be relevant. It is to be expected from this sort of style of narration. However, I do feel Matis characterisation is a bit odd. This will make sense when I discuss spoilers and my theories on the story. But to put it simply, I feel certain aspects of his character is not well explained as it should be. From my reading, he doesn’t come off as a scientist or someone who works alongside NASA.
    Story and Theories:
Okay, this is the spoiler section of the review. I will admit that I had a lot of fun with the story. The concept is really interesting for what it is. However, there are moments in the narrative that make me second-guess the plausibility of the events that have taken place. This story takes place during 1979 during the Cold War, so when Matis discovered the Sound, I struggled to believe why he wasn’t taken into a military facility straight away or whether other more sophisticated detection facilities discovered the Sound at the same time or before him. Granted this is left up to interpretation and speculation since you can also argue that the Sound is a cosmic origin who chose Matis for some reason. Which this sort of open-mindedness made not convinced that Matis is a scientist.
However, I have two theories that I want to share.
