I was pleasantly surprised by the unusual quality of this story. RoyalRoad's and other light/web novel fictions are notorious for the usual ones with overpowered protagonists and LitRPG systems. This story offers a nice change of pace.
I like the characters. I think that what Mike has created a bunch of characters that feel unique one from another. It may seem obvious, but a lot of writers make one character that they like and a thing that they want them to do and just go with the flow, which often leads to the characters all feeling very similar. Basically, the only chafe I have is that the characters seem to be a little too conveniently going with the flow of the story.
For example the oath she gave to protect the prince seems a little out of character for her and mostly for the sake of the story. Also their acceptance of irrational blame for things they haven't done seems a little too much for the sake of giving them a reason to do something. It's pretty minor, but I think that the author should give them a little more "free will".
Now that I talked about the characters, let's talk about what they do, the actual story. Well, the start has a unique twist on the underdog hero trope and the story is actually well suited to the characters, although at a lot of times being fairly tropey. So I find the story as a very nicely made beginning of something with the potential to become truly great, although slightly unpolished. I find that storytellers here often start to write something and then later on, after they improved usually, they look back at their story and realize their mistakes that they have made, and see them as so baked into it, that it needs to be rewritten or stop liking the story and it goes into a hiatus. So I just really really hope the author has planned this out.
At this point RoyalRoad really wants me to talk about grammar, so I will say that the grammar was good enough that not exactly a native speaker such as myself would struggle to find any mista
