Description

Set in the Pinwheel universe, where an alliance of friendly species fights a never-ending war against the merciless insect hordes, the mission to retake a lost colony is underway. The largest Coalition fleet ever assembled descends on the moon of Kerguela, where a peaceful civilization met its end at the hands of a marauding hive fleet three decades prior. Leading the campaign is Xipa, a survivor of the original invasion, bent on righting the wrongs of her past and avenging her fallen flock. When she intercepts a mysterious signal in orbit, she assembles a crack special forces team to scour the overgrown forests and abandoned cities for answers. Evan is a seasoned Marine, deploying as part of the ground invasion force. His armored battalion lands on the moon's surface, ready to face the Bugs head-on, but all isn't as it seems. In the thirty years since the moon was captured, its occupants have adapted to its environment and changed their tactics in unforeseen ways. Now, Evan and his comrades must face off against the hive's biomechanical terrors. The flames of war and passion rage around the moon, while conflict between both friend and foe strains the alliance to its limits.

Before you, we have a truly hidden gem. The prologue is rather long, but don't let it scare you. In the span of a single chapter, it will introduce you to several likeable characters, introduce two (!) alien species, and do a masterful job of painting them without spelling out every single detail about them.
Characters. We are given a simply amazing start! From confusion to a struggle to do one's duty, from utter horror in the face of the alien invasion to pain and loss... The author masterfully utilized every word and every sentence to present us with the characters and to make us genuinely care about them in the shortest amount of time. Even a one-off character, like a male citizen with his baby, will make you feel a tingle of worry about their fate!
The worldbuilding and action are both well thought out. The lore is clearly extensive, but it is never overbearing and is given to us sparingly by introducing us to alien artifacts or by the characters asking very reasonable questions. Action is easy to follow and visualize. Most importantly, the stakes are there!
Grammar. I am not a native English speaker, but I found zero mistakes here. The author's vocabulary is extensive, and the way they used it to paint a picture of the world is admirable.
Are you looking for action? Or to feel genuine feelings? Or maybe you want to read about alien lead? Look no further; the story has it all and more!
All in all, a solid five stars! My only recommendation for the author is to break chapters a bit, reading 20 000 words in one go was a bit hard, but the story was totally worth it!

This is one of the most well-written stories I have read on this site, on par, if not even better than, the other work by the author.
Its a story about war, and the battles can be graphic so be prepared for that when you go in. There is also a bit of rather explicit sex, though that can be skipped with little difficulty... its one chapter.
I hope we get the rest here one day.

If you liked Starship Troopers, you'll probably like this a lot. The writing is polished and easy to read, if rather by the numbers.
If you had a more critical opinion of Starship Troopers, you're probably not gonna enjoy this all that much. It's basically the same thing. It's definitely HFY, and it's mostly a pastiche of action sequences and rather shallow oh-rah militarism. It leans very heavily into cliches of the genre, and characterization is pretty thin and predictable, but it may scratch an itch for more STT (the hollywood version more than the book) among fans.
So, decent, for certain tastes, but not entirely my cup of tea.
