Description

Amy Thorne has always abhorred making a scene and sticking out. Despite her best efforts in the past, she's never truly been assertive, and prefers sticking to the background. Excess attention is the last thing she wants. She's perfectly fine being a non-obtrusive wallflower at work and in her studies.

So when a clique of Mean Girls wannabees start sullying her good name in the Art History department of her university, what is she to do? Contacting the Dean would make a big fuss, and likely would give her the wrong kind of attention. But her subdued pride demands satisfaction! If only there was a way to get back at these girls with out jeopardizing her desire to remain in the background.

The only solution? Magic learned from the forbidden texts of her part-time job.

The synopsis doesn't really do it justice, there's a lot more than petty revenge on classmates. Mostly clandestine government magic stuff. It's great, give it a shot.

So, first off, the protagonist is spectacular - an intelligent, nerdy, ex-Marine, librarian who gets pulled into a magical conspiracy involving the US gov't, fairies, and a bunch of ex-crayon eaters and other assorted ex-military types, most of who now work for gov't agencies or are otherwise majorly bad-assed.
The storyline is not the spectacular off-the-track plot that would push it to instant classic, but it is an offshoot of the trope - normie pulled into the magical world - so it doesn't fall to the worst of the cliches. On top of that, the "military vet as a woman" gives a perspective rarely seen, but seems solid, reflecting real-world issues that seem to affect many women who are former military that I have spoken with.
Grammar is impeccable - writer plays with you're your its its there their they're, plus some other word play, which is a nice change from what mostly appears on Royal Road. The writing is clear, concise, and hits the right notes with nerdy, ex-military, magical, and gun enthusiast style and usage that all feel correct.
Overall, a really awesome story with plenty of grace notes of humor to move it along at a good clip. Currently in the low 20s of chapters and plenty still to go. Had to stop because of how delighted I was by the story in chapters 19 and 20 and 21.

This story has a very interesting subject line, but unfortunately the way that it's been written so far is absolutely turning me off. The POV character's perception of time jackrabbits around, and has a large exposition dump all at once, along with the general issues of run on sentences and grammar mistakes, all join the collection of flaws this story currently possesses.
TLDR; Cool concept, poor execution. Solidly three stars.
