The Archaic Ring Series
Community Rating
Description
An original story inspired by xianxia and western fantasy.
At sixteen years old, Nolan spends most of his time skipping class and playing video games, though lately he's been getting into more fights than he cares to admit. His once record-high academics are nearing the end of a gradual decline, a byproduct of a growing indifference that began to fester after his parents' divorce. All of his worries dissipate like smoke in the wind when he inexplicably wakes up in another world, only to be replaced by a wider spectrum of vexing problems.

Note:Ten percent of each book is available here on RR, which is the legal limit that Amazon's rules/regulations allow me to post. I've received some flack from potential readers for publishing these novels, but you can only work full-time for free, for so long (in this case, many years) so I hope to see some sympathy in this regard. To those that take a chance on the series, thank you!

- keymaster88Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Saw a bitter review and thought I'd show some support. To the author: your story is great man I just started reading xanxia/wuxia stories not long ago and thankfully found this series after binging most other ones on WW. Actually made an acc a while ago just to give you a rating.
It's a good change to read a xanxia that's so well written (seriously), though the cultivation system could use a bit more structure (I like it but I think it could be improved upon) and I'd like to hear more about the other people from Earth. It's been hinted at that people are collecting them and there's a lot that can be done with that idea. Not to say I'm mad that there aren't whole chapters full of explanations on the MCs cultivating, I never cared for any of that. The characters aren't out there killing the final boss every few chapters, there's good build up to the more dangerous/important fights and like someone said in another review the enemies are actually more than your usual xanxia name/face person where I actually like their pov. MCs decisions are believable, at least for me because I've seen violence before and the average person will freeze up or run away before risking their life, sorry but its true.
I hope this series is a long one and recommend it to anyone who enjoys wuxia/xanxia and wants to read one thats not lost in translation or just horribly written. - Denver KaneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Been binging chapters since I found this. Great writing and story so far. Please write more.
- Frida_CRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I started reading this book a while ago and now I find my self hooked on the story and eagerly waiting for the next chapter.
I enjoy the plot, the characters, the descriptions of Venara. I found Jason's chapters a bit difficult to read, because I am not a fan of caves and darkness, the blood lake and the events where like a nightmare to me. It scared me. The author achieved his objectives, by vividly describing that surreal world.
I enjoy reading Nolan's adventures and can't wait to read the rest of this imaginative world.
It is worth mentioning the author's descriptions and narrative are well executed. - TomaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I truly believe this is one of the best stories on this site. You will not be able to find many others with such quality of world and writing, and definitely not in this genre. I will point out a lot of problems with the story, mostly to tell the author what I think. All of these make the story just a bit less than it could be, but do not impact the overall quality of it. So I recommend reading this nonetheless.
The characters and by virtue the plot as well are the weak point of this story, I must say. I feel that the main characters should be expanded upon, their wishes and goals because at the moment they are kind of aimlessly moving away from the conflict and to profits. This isn't to say they are not logical, this seems like the most logical thing to do, but it's too logical, empty even. I like Nolan and Nyla for the bits that we do know of her, but the emphasis is not on their emotions most of the time, but on their current state instead. I understand writing good characters that feel real is hard and you have managed to do so very well in fact, but I think they need to be expanded upon. Side characters though are actually well done, mostly due to the fact that they have a few chapters explaining the background and inner turmoil. I do have a problem with how long the side character chapters are, they take away from the main plotline of Nolan. This can be changed for the better by making their chapters a bit shorter, instead of four/three chapters make it two instead. A very important thing when writing a story with multiple viewpoints is to keep the tension at the end of each viewpoint. When we exit out of a Nolan chapter I want to get right back into it but have the same feeling once I finish the subsequent Jason or Nyla chapter. A lot of the chapters end in an anticlimactic way, and it makes going into another viewpoint a bit disappointing, I find myself trying to not simply skim through the Sersa and Jason chapters because I want to be back with Nolan all th - ediblefaceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What happened to chapters 3 to 17? Trying to start this series but this is way too big of a gap to ignore
EDIT: So i was able to read the first several chapters on kindle unlimited and then came back here to continue reading. Definately enjoyed the story quite a bit so far. Have not finished it yet but i like what i have read and recommend giving it a chance. - finaltheorem47Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This novel is excellent and I would recommend it to others. This has now become one of the novels I eagerly hit F5 on.
I'm not great at analyzing writing so take what I say as a grain of salt. The main supporting characters have a medium depth and backstory with even their own POV's which are still unfolding while the stepping stone villians still have enough of a backstory to not be one dimensional. I have read some really "high dollar" novels in the past where the authors spend so much time with the POV's and going into character depth that I lose track and interest in the story itself *cough* Game of Thrones *cough*. The author still has room to expand the universe and characters depth wise but it's nothing close to many of the chinese novels I've read where it's the classic, show up to an area, get defeated by a villian with a 1 paragraph backstory, spend 100 chapters getting stronger, come back and defeat the villian and move on to the next area. - PsychoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is pretty great. Genre is indeed wuxia with maybe some western fantasy, from later, so far is only main character, that clearly had western upbringing and didn't immediately turn into murderous fiend.
I will also bring up flaws that bothered me, in comment to the last(23) chapter. - jpat1988Royal Road★★ 2.0Started reading it. This wouldnt be the first book ive read on RR that i ended up buying to support the author but the 3 chapter teaser thing bugged me enough not to keep going. Writing was ok. Nothing to original. DEFINITELY not worth feeling forced into buying it. The three chapters were not total shit. Hence the two stars instead of 1.
- ContradictionRoyal Road★★ 2.0Its not good. At all. But at least its not bad? Pretty par for the course as far as xianxia goes.
Lets go through the checklist:
Secret cultivation technique? Yup
Power level battles (my cultivations higher than yours, theres nothing you can do anakin!!!) Check
MC breaks the power level battle rules but no one else can.
MC killing sect elders useless grandson and now the sect must hunt him down? Of course
Tyranny as a norm for everyday people. Might equals right mindset for everyone. Really makes it hard for anyone to believe villages would even exist when actions by everyday people are so tyrannical that society is more likely to kill you than living as an individual with no strings attached.
Theres 90 something chapters, so maybe it gets better. And all of book 1 is in one area, so maybe its just a shitty region. But if it stays the same as most other xianxias with senseless tyranny from Everyone, im dropping it. Its just too unbelievable people would act like that and still have functional societies. - Mr.MimeRoyal Road★ 1.0The novel is annoying as hell. Why the novel has such a high rating is beyond me. The MC is all righteous and keeps on helping everyone he comes across. Sode characters are annoying is hell and are a burdon to MC. But it is the MC that feels sorry for not being able to help them.
