The Abyss That Stares

Description
Many things have changed, in the thousands of years of Stillera's history. Wars waged, countries razed, prosperity and destitution walking hand in hand throughout the centuries. But one thing that has remained a constant, are the Rifts.
They harbor within them unfathomable horror, creatures that have flooded into the world of Stillera time and again. However, for the first time in a long time, Stillera seems to have reached an uneasy equilibrium with the terrors of the Rift, people with abilities that rival the monstrosities seeking to destroy them rising up to defend their home.
But, in an unremarkable forest, in an unmarked lab, a creature has been born. Grown from the dark flesh of the Rift. And all it knows is hunger.
After all, as those in Stillera have come to know...
The Abyss has a tendency to stare back.
(The premise of this novel is heavily inspired by Super Minion. Everything else, not so much.)

- AgurthaalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really great story, clearly takes inspiration from super minion (like the author says) but maintains its own freestanding identity. The most obvious parallels are simply the lab at the beginning and the inhuman MC with morphing powers- but even these are merely surface level similarities and are shown to distance themselves adequately with closer examination. This is just one of those stories that really really gets you lusting for the next chapter to be released, a welcome reprieve from all the unoriginal gunk that I've been trying to enjoy lately. The MC (Joey Waffles- as he named himself after trying the delicious breakfast item) is one of those characters that's 90% morally destitute and will devour those who oppose him with little hesitation- but he shows strong loyalty and affection toward Joey (the source of his first name) and as of now there are hints of a developing relationship with the original Joey's family as a sort of surrogate for our young MC. There are also occasionally other POVs that flesh out the lab Joey left behind (and detail their hunt for him) or describe a group of students that I'm guessing will eventually become Joey II's classmates in the academy- superhero school basically. Even though that particular idea is a tad overused, I have a feeling that the author will make it work- more than work, even. Great main characters, no gripes with grammar, interesting world and powers- what's there not to love?
- Re_XyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the story, a great protagonist, and the gramatic mistakes are Intentional.
It is as if we are watching a real person/monster growing up, it's wholesome in all the weird ways.
I hope that there may be more chapters, or that I might learn how the release schedule is (wich I might have missed because I was too captivated by the storie)
I will read every chapter as soon as I realise there is a new one. - ShicksalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't often give 5 stars, but this is a story I feel deserves it fully.
The writing style is new and imaginative. It has gripping action and great characterization (especially considering the way it's written) and is told from the perspective of an intelligent, extraterrestrial lifeform and his interactions with human experimentation.
Any grammar or spelling errors are completely deliberate, adding a new layer of depth to the narrative as the protagonist's cognitive functions evolve.
10/10 would recommend. Check it out! - SoeirRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story is credible, got well timed twists and a really nice flow.
Same kind of feel as Super Minion. Kinda. Just close enough to be familiar but not overly predictable.
Can't stop myself comparing it to Super Minion, but it's clearly more an inspiration than plagiarism.
Anyway, I loved Super Minion, and I think that when we get double the current chapters I'll love The Abyss that Stares just as much. - TrilandianRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This isn't one of those stories I start reading and think "Yeah, could be good. Maybe it'll pick up the pace and get me invested a few chapter in". No; this story hooked me right away and hasn't let go since. There's plenty of action and intrigue that kept me reading through all the currently available chapters in only one day.
The unique world and characters feel very much alive and the author has managed to get me interested in them without dumping lengthy characted backgrounds and descriptions on me with every new character's introduction like some authors seem to think is necessary.
One of my favorite series. - dvethRoyal Road★★ 2.0Nothing about the progression of the main character makes sense. The humans seem to think the main character is terrifying, but the main character has trouble killing simple dogs and porcupines. There also doesn't seem to be a lot of actual progression in terms of increase in strength despite lots of evidence that there should be in terms of added features.
The worst part is how X1 repeatedly refuses to use tools they develop because of some strange sense that they would be cowardice, despite the fact cowardice shouldn't even be an idea they recognize in that manner. The fact they not only recognize it but have such a weird, biased interpretation of it makes no sense.
