Tenthé and the Magisters' College
Community Rating
Description
Life is pretty good for Tenthé on the streets of the City Proper; he has something to wear, food from the Mission, and a place to sleep. He spends most of his time searching through the ruins, hoping to find a copper or two, and sometimes picking up an odd job from his friends or from the old gods. Yeah, there's the occasional tiff, but it's never anything he can't handle.See, over the years, he's managed to pick up his own brand of magic, and although anyone with enough ability is supposed to apply to the Magisters' College, the reality is that it's only for the privileged, and Tenthé has never felt the need. He's done okay on his own.Unfortunately, when Gods and magic are a significant part of everyday life, the good times can't last. The signs are all there: the missing Dreamer, the overdue Horde, and the fact that Tenthé hasn't been trapped in a weird part of the Pools in quite some time. Whatever the cause, he's certain he'll be dragged into a mess sooner or later. But maybe this time it won't end up as bad as the last time. Or the time before that. Or...No matter what happens, Tenthé will do what he always does: take things one day at a time. And maybe a wallet or two along the way.Note: All the chapters in the current story arc have been posted. Enjoy. That is an order; you shall comply!

- Mr. Mis'chiefRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoyed this book - found it randomly and after a two day binge it's one of my favourite books.
Great fantasy, quite a bit of mystery, really unique setting - I think it's my favourite setting of all the royal road books I read.
Prose, grammar and so on seemed fine, but English is not my primary language so I don't care about it that much. - KathyMacRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Lots of fun, lots of action, lots of unexpected twists and turns. The hero Tenthe does things differently; that's what happens when you put the skills of a 500 year old magic user into a 10 year old.
This is Young Adult fiction, but it's aimed at the "young" end of that scale. That's why, for me, it lags a bit on the "character" scale; Tenthe is complex and interesting, but almost everyone else could use some more depth. Except Bear, but hey -- he's a stuffed toy. How much depth can you really expect?
Stylistically, Rickrackrun has some "tics" that need to be fixed. Grammatically it's pretty much perfect.
And the story is a rollicker; I think you'll love it! - LJ19Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'll start by saying that I am surprised this story is not more popular yet! I randomly clicked on it and was surprised to find that it is as good or better than many stories on rising stars. So thank you to the author for a fun read! I hope that more readers find it, so I am writing my first "advanced review."
The style and grammar and editing are very good. I only found perhaps a few semicolons that I would recommend changing. The story is well plotted with occasional twists and an interesting mystery about the origins of the main character. Tenthe has a child's perspective but has experienced more than most adults in the story. The world building is very interesting, with old, hidden temples and a cycle of destruction and renewal that the cities go through. This is well done, though it is not clear yet what the Dreamers really do or why they are needed. The characters are well written, and the main character is quite sympathetic and easy to read about. Overall, I recommend that you give this story a try if you like fantasy novels with a sense of wonder, a sympathetic MC, and a little humor. - Hephaestus0Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story that really belong in my personal top 10.
The style s good enough that the author could publish it on amazon. The same holds for the level of grammar.
The story is quite original but it is not flawless. I have difficulty believing some of the early live of the main character.
I think the protagonist is quite original. My only problem is that the first 20 tp 60 years he dit not change and when the story start he starts to change really fast.
I hope to get more chapters from this author. - SinseenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story is interesting so far and there are no grammar errors that I noticed which would affect the story. The characters so far are described in a way that does not go into to much detail but not so little you can not notice each characters traits and looks. The story is well paced but does have some confusing moments which do not ruin the story so far but does make you look back at them. So in conclusion the story so far is good and is worth checking out.
- Onward15Royal Road★★★★ 4.0This is well-written. The details are nice and the characters truly memorable. Our hero is also freakishly strong, which I like. The quality of the fic, overall, is a cut above the rest.
However, this has coming-of-age/Ya setting and reads accordingly. Nothing wrong with that if that's your thing, but I prefer a story with more action and adult themes. This has a slice-of-life pacing and a focus on young/immature people.
Having said that, it's really good for what it is. - SodiumBicarbonateRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The Author has a very nice flow to the prose, as well as little to no grammar errors (only found one) up to chapter 15 (where I read up to). I think the story has very good potential and the concept is very intriguing, but it's just not my cup of tea. Only issue I would have with this story is that the mc seems to be a little one dimensional. I know he is supposed to be mentally 10 years old, but I find that he seems to act more like a 6 year old, which I feel could stunt his character growth without some time skip or many chapters developing him. There could be some change later on, but for me I could not resonate enough with the mc to keep reading it. But it is worth a shot!
