- Fanatical FanariusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have to say, this book does very well. It's very rare to see a book make sense when it comes to how it handles core mechanics and yours does it phenomenonally well. Unlike The Beginning after the end which I find an equally good book, you provide detailed explanations and even diagrams on important information, even smaller details like the knife is not skipped over for those who want to see what the knife looks like rather than just read a description. Very little authors put so much time and effort fleshing out how magic or mana or quantum mechanics work, and I have never seen any put in as much as you do. I can tell you it's paying off, never ever skip out on these parts, they are what can make the story interesting.
- VeritasianRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a wonder, its magic system fleshed out and wonderfully—in my opinion—typed. The author has set up the magic in a way that makes some amount of sense and really does help to make the characters sound knowledgable in their subjects, unlike most other stories where exactly which processes are involved in the making of a spell are only mentioned tangentially by the characters. The author has also thought out other things as well, such as how a change in environment affects what spells can be cast, which is just damn cool. At times the writing, I will admit, is a bit boring to work through and the decisions of some characters don't quite hit the mark, considering they are all human beings capable of critical thinking(even if some are better than others at it) and the fact that the school does nothing about Olav, even though it is abundantly clear they know of his activities through teachers like the one Isyd is in class with in the chapter I'm reviewing this from, is kind of grating. No school, especially one where dangerous disciplines that could be used to harm, maim and kill people are taught, should allow such a thing. It is just blatantly irresponsible, to be honest. But this is a novel and I've gone on a rant.
Love the novel! It has been a great read so far - jacobpaigeRoyal Road★★★ 2.5The MC states repeatedly that he's trying to regulate how much attention he draws. Not too much, not to little. But the things he actually does, at least according to the lore dumps we're given, are not things that even a magical prodigy would be able to do without extensive training he's stated repeatedly that he needs them to believe he doesn't have.
The MC has stated that he intends to save everyone from an invading, extrademensional army that will obliterate the world (not a spoiler), but he makes no effort whatsoever to build a base of power, and in fact, goes out of his way to piss off noble brats who he could easily guess wouldn't take it well, while making himself appeear to be as easy of a target as possible, to encourage them to make his life harder than it needs to be. So, not only is he doing nothing to make his stated goal of saving the world easier, he is actively making it harder, for no good reason.
There is a major difference between telling me that a protagonist is rational, seasoned, ultra-competent badass who survived an apocolypse and rose to highest levels of humanity's armed forces, and showing it, and this series does plenty of the former, but far too little of the latter.
Also, the grammar could use quite a bit of work. Its not unreadable, but it is very noticable.
