We tried, you know…
We really did.
We triedso hardto be… better…
We actually werebetteronce. No, seriously. We were enlightened, generous, peaceful…
Stop laughing! We were! We werepeaceful, dammit!
No, I’m not “tugging your winglets.” It’s true!
Look, if you’re going to be like that, I’ll just push the launch button right now. See ya, don’t wanna be…
Oh, you ARE interested after all? Ok.
Hey, I just got word that your captain will be ok. We were able to get him into a med pod quick enough… Of course, we tried to save him. Just what sort of people do you think we are?...
Now that was harsh… completely accurate, mind you… but harsh.
Anyway, like I was saying, we were a prosperous, peacefulpeople, and war had been nothing but a distant memory for over five hundred years before it happened...
Before Yellowstone happened! You don’t mean to tell me that you didn’t know about that… Massive supervolcano? Blew the Hell out of our planet? Two years where nothing grew?…
Anyway, that’s what started it, the Sol Wars…
Oh, youhaveheard about those, huh? Well, needless to say, all that enlightened, generous, and peaceful didn’t exactly make it through that. Maybe it’s more accurate to say the enlightened, generous, and peaceful among us didn’t survive…
(laughs)… You’re right. Itdoesexplain a lot, doesn’t it?
Probably for the best, though. “Enlightened” and “peaceful” aren’t really all that useful out here in the galaxy, are they? We're not the only jerks out here. We aren't the worst ones, either, not by a long shot.
That reminds me, thanks for the ship. It's really nice. Oh, don’t be like that. At least it was us what got you and not one of the really messed groups like the Harlequin or the Black Angels. We’re just going to take your shit. It could be worse…trust me...
Well, anyway, we loaded the life pods down with some good food, and you guys can drink alcohol, right? We put in a couple of fifths in there, too. It’s about forty percent ethanol, so be warned. We’ll drop your wounded off somewhere safe once they are stable.
Your fleet patrols this area fairly regularly, and we’ll drop the distress beacon right before we jump…
Well, It’s been fun and no hard feelings, right?…
Oh, you want to know some more? Sure. I got time to kill…

It’s the thirty-second century, and humanity is now part of a galactic civilization comprised of hundreds of worlds. Humanity has been savaged by natural disaster and war and has been fractured into several separate populations, all of which loathe each other (some things never change). This is a gritty drama-driven rambling tale that swings between action, drama, horror, and plenty of very, very dark comedy.
Warning: contains adult situations, absolutely horrible language, bathroom humor, implied ultra-violence, actual ultra-violence, drugs, alcohol, pirates, mercs, xeno prostitutes, moral ambiguity, deranged AI's with identity issues, giant commie space slugs, and a poor little frog girl who just wants to sell coffee.
Updated weekly (more or less).

Disclaimer:
Those warning tags on top? Yeah... They aren't for show. This story can get pretty dark. It's not a "grimdark" slog through gore, but it does have its moments. I don' t pull punches and some heavy/contentious issues are involved sometimes. Please bear in mind that this is a work of fiction and just because a character, even a main or sympathetic one, does something or endorses something, the author is NOT endorsing it. (I'm a decent human being. I promise!)
The main rule of this tale is, "no good guys". It's less "good versus evil" and more "bad people doing bad things to worse people".
Pick your favorite rogue, kick back, and enjoy the show!

- rgreadsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Killer bunnies were left out of the synopsis. -1 star. Killer bunnies are included in the story. +1 star.
So is everything else in this grey, orange and blue morality, gritty, epic science fiction collection of linked short stories. Similar to First Contact with a less space opera feel, and from the same /r/HFY (Humanity, Fuck Yeah!) subreddit, TFtTR also includes a generous helping of /r/HWTF. Yes, that stands for exactly what you think it does. When you learn exactly why the Terran Republic calls it a 'luau' when you roast some long pig alive, you may agree they had it coming.
That's okay though. At some point in the human-wide civil war, the follow-up guerilla war with some opportunistic xeno conquerers, and the two backstabbing surprise attacks after that, nukes were turned into belt-fed automatic weapons, and nobody's quite sure how many of them are squirreled away somewhere.
But there's definitely enough for everyone who has it coming to get some, even if it takes a while for everyone to get their turn. - DaithiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you like HFY and SCI-FI in general check it out. Its refreshing to see humanity amongst several races. And the human history and conflict is quite compelling and interesting.
And my biggest compliment is that while there are several plot lines and character none of them got old. I was always sad to leave them and always happy to return. Your milage may very. But I dont love multiple plots/ chars for this very reason and I think the author does a great job of this.
Easy read with nary a grammar mistake to distract from the narrative. (I am an easy grader here).
Check out a fun story! - DondokinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One part starship troopers, one part black lagoon, and a dash more comedy than both essentially describes Tales From the Terran Republic. This is a graphic, hilarious, and grim dark set of stories. Even the most purely good characters have to take up arms and cut their enemies down.
It's setting is a galaxy where Humans are very much of the "fuck yeah" variety and have weathered at least four all out wars in the past century. The variety of sci-fi concepts and aliens feels very stellaris, especially since the aliens aren't remotely humanoid. In fact, it reminds me kind of how I view my materialistic militaristic empires in Stellaris. "No I won't join your galactic government, stop fighting me I just finished dealing with the late game crisis by myself. Don't make me come over there, I'll happilly restructure my economy just to glass your planets."
I have nothing bad to say, this is pure enjoyment. You know how everyone talks about character sillohettes in animation and graphic novels. I don't know the equivalent term for what a good character sillohette is in a novel, but this has it. Within a single chapter the story will gift you prominent characters with discernible imagery and personalities that make them unique and memorable.
The action is fun. The schemes are fun. The enemies are fun and well placed. It's not that they are well especially well developed. But you'll get a hint at a villain or enemy in one chapter, then another hint, then bam that person is now a target.
The dialogue carries this. I haven't seen any cringe dialogue, but rather everything anyone says is liable to make me laugh with the story. Maybe I partook in too many of Grammie's Brownies but every conversation just had enough comedy to make me laugh.
Edit: I just wanted to update this and say everything is still going strong over a hundred chapters in. This stuff rocks and continues to be a top read for me. See you guys in the comments - LoateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a very well-written work that isn't afraid to get down into the gutters of power (although at times it can veer slightly nihilistic), yet still manages to retain a core of optimism that as long as life endures, there's still a chance for things to get better. Contains lots of gratuitious violence, so if that's not your thing, be forewarned.
- MitchBeachRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Thank you slightly amusing :*

OK I didn't make it to an advanced chappy rewie. :/ fucking shit!!!!!!!!!!! - Peasant262Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Tales from the Terran Republic is, fundamentally, a story of bad people doing bad things to worse people.
At the same time, though, it tells a compelling story of survival, growth, and change in the bounds of an unforgiving and rapidly changing galaxy: if you're looking for an odd, profane, and occasionally thought provoking multi-pov space drama, I can't recommend it enough.
Thanks for the excellent read: I hope to see more someday soon :) - TrilandianRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've been following this series on reddit for the past six months, and it's currently my favorite online fiction series.
Style:
Probably the main reason I like TFtTR so much is the writing style. This series is an absolute exemplar of word economy.
There are no walls of text of expositions, infodumps, meandering descriptions of pointless miscellanea, or droning conversations about fluff unimportant to the plot.
Pretty much every single paragraph in the story contains something interesting. At every point, either something is happening, characters are talking (about something relevant to the story or important to character building), or important background information about something the author already put the work into having the reader invested in is being relayed.
Story:
It's hard to pin down what TFtTR is about, since the story's focus keeps shifting between characters, themes, and subplots throughout the series (sometimes doing so multiple times within the same chapter), so I can't really give an overview that would be better than telling you to just start reading it. As I've said in the style section, there are no expositions and slow buildups to slog through; you get thrown into the action right away.
What I can say is that it won't get boring at any point (except maybe for a bit of a tangent the story goes on around chapters 107-113). TFtTR runs full steam ahead from the word "go", and this train has no breaks. I've been hooked since the first chapter, and chances are, you'll be too.
The story universe itself feels very much alive, and events within it feel like they unfold organically, with no Deus Ex Machina "Where the hell did that come from?" moments.
Grammar:
There are around one or two grammar errors per chapter, and they're evidently the result of editing errors rather than a lack of grammatical acumen on the author's part.
Character:
Considering the very extensive cast of characters and the positively spartan character introductions the reader is giv - megalomagiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I just started reading this today. I love it and got weird looks for laughing as I read it. I highly recommend it so far. It will be fun to see where it goes from here. Sincerely fun, not just interesting, not just emotional, but bad, definitely not wholesome, somewhat nihilistic, and all around addictive fun. Thank you for the story!!!
- BabaNovacRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read countless stories on this website along the years and every now and then I find a story that blows all the other stories out of the water. Trust me you will not regret reading this, what you will regret though is skipping out on reading this gem of a story. I still don't know why it's not in top 5 yet, but I am sure it won't take too long until it will get there!
- ElektrikhitRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is awesome. The grammar is good, the characters are (mostly) memorable, and the stakes are very, very real. The plot is excellent, and don't be intimidated by the author's warnings, the story gets pretty dark, but it's not a constant thing, there is a lot of humor mixed throughout. Also, the story does a great job of avoiding excess exposition and infodump, and releases the information in a interesting manner. My only beef is the lacking descriptions of the character, but that's a fairly minor issue. My favorite part of the story however, is that reads like a stellaris campaign. All the political maneuvering, varying cultures, and everything is flashing me back to summer break, where I would spend all day in front of my laptop playing stellaris. Overall, 10/10 story, would recommend.
