Description

When his life spins out of control, a gnome fakes his death and goes on the run, hoping a distant relative can take him in. When that fails, and with no other options, he falls in with a flamboyant adventurer-turned-fugitive whose only fear is obscurity. With only the barest hint of a plan, they set out across a kingdom scarred by war, and filled with factions competing for wealth and power.

They're not going to save the world, but if they can stick together, maybe they can save themselves.

I found this story through a review swap and I was not disappointed. It’s a clever book that has some great lighter moments and had me happily flicking through the chapters.
Style: I feel like I stumbled into a fairytale, it was refreshing and wonderful. Descriptive writing isn’t too heavy and manages to strike the perfect trad fantasy tone. From the first few paragraphs I know the world I’m in, and it's masterfully done with a light touch.
Story: The story centers on Dell, a gnome who bounces from one miss fortune to another in a world that is absolutely jam packed with fantasy creatures, races and mysteries. The trajectory of his journey takes a turn when he meets Erusmus who is the most imaginative character I’ve had the pleasure of meeting for a long time. I won’t spoil it, but he is amazingly creative.
Character: The whole ensemble have their own distinct voice and I think that this is where the story really shines. The characters are colorful and tell you as much about the setting and contribute to the world building as much as the wonderful setting descriptions. Lots of the characters are fulfilling more traditional roles (guards, soldiers, thieves) but each is given attention to make them unique. Dell is the main character (as far as I read) and he is likable, the insights into his thoughts are particularly nice and I get the impression that he is smarter than most give him credit for. Grammar I’m not close-reading for issues. Nothing got in the way of my reading
