- john.mainerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love Warhammer 40K, and while half the Black Library is amazing, the other half is straight trash. This fan fiction is honestly better than 70% of the official works, and if you knew how good the other stuff was, you would realize how good that makes this.
If you know the universe, prepare for an amazing ride. If you don't then this will prepare you to play the game (Sororitas for the win). Don't expect the official fiction to all be this good, most of them will fall short of the standard this sets. - ColderWindsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is one of the better fanfics I have read, the writer is very aware of what they are creating and the lore surrounding it.
Many tropes are avoided, some are leaned into but do not create the narrative's pace. The world has more going on than just the main character and the people involved have their own stories at least.
Story is fantastic, I'm excited to see where it goes. I much prefer this story to the female custos and warhammer that has generally ripped apart its canon. This one feels believable, I can 100% accept the premise of the story. - Eaglestrike777Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like it a lot, the story just flows nicely. I hope y'all who like 40k stories would also appreciate what this author crated. Because many other Fan Fiction about 40k are pretty bad compared to this story, I hope the author continue to write more in the future... .
- FluffysDayOffRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you enjoy Warhammer 40k you'll enjoy this. It's both fun and serious, it was also surprisingly emotional at times.
I think some who don't know Warhammer might be confused by some concepts but I still think that they also would find it enjoyable.
Really enjoyed reading and highly recommend. - IcecreamSundaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The best, and I do mean, THE BEST WH40k fiction ever written. This makes the Black Library's stuff look like the lame fan fiction! lol. Honestly tho, the Black Library is so boring these days. They are scared to innovate.
Syrine is such a wonderful protagonist to follow. Realistic. Reasonably justified in all her actions. And most of all...she's cool. I also like Genderbender. - LightbruhRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Enjoyable read. Can't wait for more, really like the MC and their interactions with the cast. Sometimes the author can spend too much time on a topic. Other than that the intro to the story is cool, the characters are cool, the MC's powers are cool. Just everything is interesting to read about, ultimately imagining a fan of the hobby being in the universe is interesting by itself.
- OrcJizz-4983Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was wary going into this as I've ever been a grim dark fan. But this was just lighthearted enough that I couldn't stop reading till I was done lol.
Now I'm going to have to go on the hunt for more Warhammer fan fics and inevitably get fkn depressed. - Reader1587Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0So glad I discovered this one via RoyalRoad recommendation. Devoured the whole thing in one session. The only two things I am unsatisfied with are that Next Chapter button is grayed out and there is no Paypal/Patreon link :-) My understanding is that the author wants no external pressure to deliver and that is fine.
I was slightly wary of the gender-bender tag because some authors like to mess up a protagonist in an agonizing way, but here it is used mainly for comedic effect. A new reader should have some basic awareness of WH40k universe to fully enjoy the story. Personally, I haven’t played any games, but I read the entire series about Comissar Cain. There are some parallels you can draw between Cain and Syrine:
- they are both accidental heroes
- venerated by their compatriots
- trying to remain in the background away from danger
- yet time and again drawn to the foreground of ongoing events
- having an impact beyond their expectations
- reputation is snowballing
Syrine brings 21st century humane views to 40k grimdark universe, and it puzzles the contemporaries considerably. My favorite chapter was the one where Syrine completely unsettled a seasoned Ordo Hereticus inquisitor in a single meeting. I am looking forward to where this story is going and hoping for more chapters in the future. - Sondrex76Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This fanfic is a lot of fun to read, with an MC that is from our earth (or somewhere similar) now having taken the place of what is essentially a minor demigod.
The MC have modern sensibilities, yet the grimdark universe means they can't exactly follow those very often.
It's a great deal of fun to see them interact with this galaxy, and I am curios to see if they will manage to make it a better place, manage to survive, or will fail utterly as time moves onwards. - CocolopolisRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a fun read that does something important for a fanfic that wants to last: it keeps to its own.
For the 40K universe, many fanfics fall into the mistake of competing with foundational personages or important characters within their borrowed worlds. Some want to be more powerful than the Emperor. Some want to show how cool their protagonists are by having them one-up Guilliman or some other supremely influential Core character.
The Syrine story keeps to its little corner of the galaxy, a place with little to no presence in the WH-40k lore. That's reasonable and doesn't compete with the GamesWorkshop story all that much. The protagonist, a female Primarch, does not act haughty, empowered, or otherwise promotes the cavalier attitude of rampant "OP Mentality' I've read in other works. Instead, the protagonist works within the structure of the world setting, and injects a certain amount of empathy into a grimdark universe.
In essence, if the protagonist is killed tomorrow, she'd be nothing but a footnote in someone's memory. That's alright, because the idea of Syrene isn't to remove the 'grim' out of the grimdark universe, but to carve out a small corner and do its own thing.
Could it interact in the future with important WH40k characters? Sure, but hopefully when the story and protagonist are nice and seasoned for such an experience.
Keep writing. This is well worth the effort.
