It is great and despite having less than 20 chapters I was reading it for quite a while. Would recomend to everyone.
BUT! About let's say  100% of all characters are using the MC in one way or another, minor or major and I would be lying if I would say that I was not screeming in my head at some stuff that he had done.
Despite that, I recognize that it is not the fault of the author and is just the kind of story that he is going for.
Also really appreaciating that it is not an empowerment fantasy where everyone but the MC is a stupid and arogant prick and the women are even worse, reaching barely second dimension with their characters, if at all.
    Final verdict: ME LIKEY!

Follow favorite recommend. One of the best ff ive read in rrl. Chapters are long and fullfiling. It sates my craving for great novel. Hidden gem, etc... When i saw 4 reviews about it in home page i immediately decided to read it and thank god i did. Dont care what others say but the story is freakin amazing. And did i ever tell you that its one of the best for me?

I have enjoyed the authors, vision on the MC. Alot of story's give us a MC who seems to be ether a but beyond the bend. Or too cookie cutter  being the superman of the neet world etc.  Now I'm not saying there aren't moments when things get a bit overly unrealistic  but we wouldn't be reading it if it wasn't. But I think the characters and story are well thought out and developed.  I think some might not like it because it doesn't have the overly creepy type MC. WHo seems to be stuck with must act like power hungry mad man.Yes I enjoy a few of those too.  I have enjoyed that he acted a bit more like glass is half full kid of guy instead of the evil little twit that you start to hate after a while. And that normal people would hang if they got the chance. But thanks again for an enjoyable story.   ANd I would have to disagree with the last review . Just my two cents.

As the review title says, this is in my opinion one of the best works on RoyalRoad. The only reason it isn't in the top is the infrequent posts, but the wait is well worth it. The characters are likable, the plot interesting, and the jokes are funny.
Perhaps the best part of the novel is the main character, who, while he is a genius, is not the typical mc who claims to be smarter than everyone and happens to get all the girls. He is grumpy, stubborn, and childish at times, while still being eminently likable.
The half star off for story is not because it is uninteresting, but because it is not really the focus of this novel. If you want a fast-paced story filled with revenge and working to defeat a nemesis or evil overlord, this is not for you. If you're ok with the plot taking its time to flesh things out, I can't recommend it enough.

I love this story and how it progresses, feels random but in a good way. Some stories you know the generic hero will find the generic super whatnot weapon save the day blah blah not here. Constantly wondering what will happen next MC is growing and I enjoy seeing his progress both in power and how he's maturing growing from a bad situation. I honestly can't say enough about this story one of the best iv stumbled across on this site please give me more. =] props to the author this is the second story you've written "from my view" and both keep me interested and I was shocked to read someone left a crappy rating that buried swamp for a while. Sending good thoughts your way 😁👍👍👍

I discovered this novel because of The Defective Hermit, which I really enjoy, so I readily indulged into this one with the same hope.
Style: The style of writing is great and it always has me looking forward to more releases. The kind of style you have is what I think makes the stories you write very attractive to read.  I have no complaints about this part of the story.Story: When I first started to read this story I was turned off at the beginning with him being a slave and being taken advantage of. But, I stuck with it to see how it would develop. It turns out that I was actually enjoying and being able to see how he progressed and overcame his problems. The story overall is not my favorite but it is something that I have come to enjoy.Grammar: Well, the grammar is great in my opinion, (much better than mine) so really no complaints on this end. I just found some small mistakes here and there nothing too big.Character: The character in my opinion is the most important part of the story. I just have trouble sticking with a story if I don’t fond the characters enjoyable. The MC is a great character. Starts out as a slave and preserves to find joy in magic and making peoples lives easier. The only problem I have with him is the indecisiveness when it comes to the swamp and if he’s going to stay there. Overall the characters are great and I hope to see how they develop in the future.Overall: Swamp Boy is a great read that I would recommend to everyone as well as The Defective Hermit the other story by this author.

The mc's mind is a chaotic wonderland of revelutionary ideas. That has the potiental to become the cornerstone to change this ever expanding world. The writing style is advanced and compeling the writer uses a interesting way to develop the story along with a bit of random chance thrown in.

One of the better stories on the site. Some may ignore the story for now for how many chapters there are (at the time of reviewing there is only 19 chapters) but this is one of the stories you shouldn't judge the length by the amount of chapters. A chapter size is about double the normal size of a chapter on this site if not more.
The story is good but I am sad the war was mostly skipped. We got some info on what happen and what James helped with. Though from what is coming it doesn't seem like that will happen in future chapters.
MC James is a ex-slave that would probably die fighting before he is made a slave again. (if there is no chance of escape) He can be naive early on (mainly about money) but he isn't stupid. He was told he could go to a school for magic and he basically asks if the person is stupid. Keep in mind this magic school is full of nobles and James knew how they would treat him. He will trust certain people but never without some back up plan.  His lack of common sense does cause some problems for some of the side characters. Keep in mind the problems he causes aren't mixed with naive stupidity. He has a soft spot for slaves/ex-slaves and soliders.  I could go on more but I feel like I would write more spoilers.
When it comes to side characters I think he may cause a few of them to go bald from lack of common sense, breaking common sense, and wanting to live in the swamp.

I wish james wouldnt be a ''slave'' to his friends or however? he see them. He is literally cant say no. I loved first few chapters but after he  healed the bitten girl and used by the princess and get noting.  I fastforward the chapters. I agree with TEMBULON he feels like a tool. he manipulated by everyone and that makes me very frustrated .I read the novel with hope he would eventually break his shackle but so far i dont see that coming heck first thing he does after assasination  make potion or something for kingdom i dont remember if he fully healed that time. i hate the  mc.I hate his mindset he feels a bit like typical japanese mc and i hate it. He could have been  much better.
oh that feld much better now i can leave :D
