The Academy of Sorcerous Arts is formidable, imposing, elite, and very scary.

Meredith Taylor is none of those things. She has never fit in at her provincial school, and she doubts she’s likely to start now, at the most prestigious magical institution to which she has been granted admission

There are challenges to surmount, spirits to summon, Signs to pick and spells to learn. But all Meredith wants, for once in her life, is to make a genuine friend. Anyone will do, really.

Written for the 2022 Magazine Challenge. I expect this to end up a novella, with a definite end in mind. Hopefully I can get there before the contest's conclusion.

    The grammar and prose in this story are very nice, but the events of the story tend to repeat themselves. There are places where we get two or three versions of the same events, all seen throhg the MC’s eyes. I don’t think it’s a bad thing in of itself, as this type of narration style would work well with a younger audience.
    The plot of the story itself is very basic, just like the MC Merry. Her archetype (the outcast with mysterious and grand powers) works well with the chosen audience.
    However, a lot of worldbuilding details (like the main location of the events) are missing more often than not, and are only brought up when the plot needs it. I think this is one of those cases where a prologue could help establish the world and grab the attention of the reader. But without that, it’s really hard to get invested.
