Starbound and Broken

Description
In the distant future, humanity has found its place with their peers among the stars. Due to their sheer adaptability, humans have earned fame for being able to explore planets whose crushing gravity and harsh conditions rendered them uninhabitable to every other space-faring civilization.
This story follows a tightly-knit crew of explorers sent to look into a mysterious development around a world that had been previously thought to house only non-sapient life that suddenly made a leap into space.
It later turns out, however, that even they were ill equipped to handle this mission, as a series of unfortunate events leave them changed in ways they never could have prepared for, simultaneously in desperate need of help while being a danger to themselves and those around them.
What to expect:
-Story centered around the characters' struggle as they get put in and get each other out of harrowing situations.
-Characters try to make the best decisions that their situation, mental state and personal flaws allow, while working with oftentimes incomplete or incorrect information, meaning they won't always be objectively correct but I will try to explain the reasoning every time.
-Multiple POV main characters. A personal exploration of various characters thoughts and reactions to the events of the story while never losing focus on the overarching plot.
-Tone varying between light-hearted banter, existential dread and characters fighting for their life, as they find themselves in and out of danger. The former because I enjoy it, the latter two happening as the story unfolds. This is something I might change depending on feedback.
-Chapters are however long it takes me to meaningfully move the story forward, usually 2k-4k words
-Terrible puns and one-liners, you’ve been warned.
On the content warnings:
-Violence/Sensitive Content: As stated, this story involves characters put in some very bad situations, sometimes ending in injury, death or arguably worse. As such, it features descriptions of that and what I consider fairly mild body horror. This isn't the focus and I've tried to not use it excessively, but it's there, so be warned if you're sensitive to it.
-Profanity: Many bad words were typed in the making of this story. I wouldn't call it excessive and it is certainly not gratuitous, but they are used during banter and in moments of high tension as the situation calls for them, which happens to be pretty often
This story has been floating in my head for a couple of years and am finally releasing it into the wild. Above all, I hope to be able to do the story, premise and how it all affects characters’ relationships justice, so any criticism is very much appreciated.

- M.E. CheRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Starbound and Broken is a sci-fi adventure that follows a diverse cast of characters on a hopeful and exploratory mission. With its clear world-building, likable characters, and balanced tone, the story offers a refreshing take on the genre. While the narrative includes hints of darker themes and body horror, it maintains a sense of levity and optimism that makes it an enjoyable read.
Engaging Characters: The cast is grounded and likable, with distinct personalities and enjoyable banter.
Clear World-Building: The story introduces its setting in manageable bits, avoiding overwhelming the reader.
Balanced Tone: The narrative strikes a good balance between lighthearted moments and darker themes, creating a dynamic and engaging tone.
Strong Pacing: The story is well-paced, with each chapter contributing to the overall narrative.
The quick shifts in POV can be jarring, especially in the early chapters. It’s not always clear whose perspective the reader is following at the start of a section.
Some characters are mentioned without context, which can momentarily pull readers out of the story.
I highly recommend Starbound and Broken to fans of sci-fi adventure, Star Trek or Dead Space—take your pick—or if you enjoy character-driven narratives. The story’s hopeful tone, engaging characters, and clear world-building make it a standout in the genre. If you’re looking for a fun and well-written sci-fi adventure, give Starbound and Broken a try!
