In a kingdom at war, power is drawn from the soul, and impossible choices turn survival into sacrifice.
Tucker is a recent graduate with a single ambition: to join the Nightfall Rangers. The elite watchmen who stand between the Everheart Kingdom and total collapse. Everything seems set in stone when he binds with a mid-tier wind spirit—a rare affinity that catches the eyes of the military’s highest orders.
But the path of a Ranger is paved with blood.
Thrust into a series of brutal missions, Tucker must rapidly cultivate his Aura, a power that dwells in the soul, and rise through the ranks. Yet, as his strength grows, he discovers that the Order demands a price that tests his very humanity.
With war looming over his nation, Tucker must balance his duties as a watchman and decide if he has what it takes to become the weapon the kingdom needs, or will the weight of his own morality break his spirit before the enemy can?

- klein.moretti.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's a great story with a lot of potential. The first chapters really draw you in. I like the main character and the veteran/rookie dynamic is really outstanding. The only problem is the lack of detail in the power system. Starting from a point where the character is already initiated into a branch of power, we lack context about the difference between wizards, knights and spiritualists. I would advise you to explore this in order to better define the power scale and the specialties of each group, since without this the fantasy feels half empty. Overall, it's a great story. English is not my first language.
- Lapochka8Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Fantastic. One of the few novels that actually contains a good macro and micro view of conflict. Quite frankly there’s a surreal layer of realistic tone underneath it all.
Very well executed, very well done.
10/10 can’t wait to read book 3
man i thought i typed 50 words out but i guess i didn’t so this is like filler content for a college essay where you go and try to make your sentences as astoundingly long as possible to meet the insane requirements of the essay being extremely long. It’s not like I’m a professional review writer or critic. If the NY best booksellers reviews can be like 10 words with … in between them, why isn’t that acceptable for me? They never even quote anybody, it’s just “NY Bestsellers list, “RIVETING, TERRIFYING, EDGE OF MY PANTS”. Like cmon guys, you can do better. Anyways this should be 50 words now i think. - OdaNunagaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0O autor demonstrou grande competência e fez um excelente trabalho ao descrever a guerra! Quanto ao desenvolvimento das personagens, este foi conduzido de forma fluida e bem construída ao longo da trama! I think the only thing that bothered me a little is the scarlet seal, but I understand that this is important for the development of the protagonist as a whole!
- Sander BroekemaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Though early in the story the characters are really well fleshed out. The only thing I'm still missing is the worl building, which I hope will still come. The introduction was great. And though still unclear showcased some of the magic. Also showed the amount of realism that was gonna be in the novel. Absolutely loved that part. I do think that untill now the story is slightly slow paced. Though with the writing quality I don't mind it even though normally it's a red flag for I believe this story paced itself remarkably well. The fights are well written as well. Though it doesn't show the entire fight I normally just find this confusing, here it just tells the fight and it absolutely rocks. The story kind of reminds me of the hunters' apprentice by John Flanagan though I might even say it's slightly better written. I do hope this story is going to expand the world building and magic. As those were the only things unclear, but for the rest I hope that the story keeps the same tempo. I'm writing this review quit early in the story, but I like the character development up untill now it is realistic and really shows a realistic growth. Overall really well done.
- ShibamRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read a few chapters, and let me tell you, it's really engaging. The story hooks the readers immediately with direct conflicts. The worldbuilding and lore feel natural.
The main character, Tucker, seems like a nice guy.
Also, the dynamic between him and his senior Alex felt great.
The spirit magic, companions, and political conflict set the stage for a unique and interesting world.
Overall, I highly recommend it. - kamran1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a true hidden gem.
I honestly don’t understand why it’s not on the top lists. Don’t let the first chapters mislead you regarding the type of main character – he goes through an impressive character development as the story progresses. Stick with it, it’s absolutely worth it. The world is described in great detail, and many side characters also gain real depth.
In the end, it has become one of my absolute favorite stories. - MocchiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Slow pace with a lot of action and where morality is always questioned. This is a great fiction that only reading it will tell you if it is good or not.
I think three of the great strengths of this fiction it's how real the characters are with everyone feeling like his own person, the way the pace of the story is constant, it's not fast but is well balanced with action, that is another great point for me, the fights are really well made.
I only have three problems with this fiction, two I think will resonate with other people and the other one is pure personal. The first one is world building that I feel has little description about other places, the surroundings have really good descriptions, but we don't know how big the empire or kingdom are, their culture and more, my other problem is with the power system, is a little jarring when even the top graduate, the main character, don't understand something that you would think is basic things, I know that author is trying to explain how the system works for us readers, but every time in the back of my head I think about how the MC didn't know those simple things. My last "problem" with the fiction is the protagonist, I just don't like him and this is pure personal; his personality it's just not to my taste.
This is a faction that won't be for everyone, but it is a good read. I read till the end of book one and it was not a waste of time, I had my problems along the way, but I will still read and I hope the author continues. - deliverRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5For some the main problem at the start of the story may be the lack of details about the world, magic/aura system ecc. but having read novels that overwhelm you with info from the get go, I am not against being gradually introduced to the context.
The biggest disappointment for me is the main character. It is clear that the author wants to make him interesting and original by having him start naive and unreliable and then grow under the guidance of an expert companion. On that note I think the first mission is actually ok because while you don't understand shit of what is happening the action is enjoyable with the MC sometimes showcasing his talents some times stumbling. The issues come immediatelly after and have got nothing to do with the MC being naive or with his talents but with how the guy thinks.
It is weird that the MC can decrypth a message of the enemy but is unable to understand that if he treats his wind spirit like shit the latter will not answer well to him. During the second mission the MC arguably saves the day improving the relation with his spirit, without making evident mistakes while the other members of his order, except his menthor, do basically nothing useful. Then, back to base, he starts criyng that he is not good enough, that he lets the team down and another guy notes that he is not at the level of two veterans one of whom is unconscious for the entirety of the mission and whose only contribution is telling the MC that he needs to stop being a decent human being because what his order requires is a brainless killing machine.
This issue may arise because the author wants to have the MC as one of the stars of the story during the (well written) action scenes while still being helped to grow, but to me the balance is off. Also there is a disconnection between what the MC does and how he himself and those around him perceive his actions that lasts more or less until the end of the first book.
P.S. I have updated my initial rating and my review - North WindRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Author has big ideas, but struggles to execute.
Grammar: spelling is pretty good, didn't really notice any typos. The major issue is the pov changes. Without warning, we suddenly get a thought/perspective from another character and I had to reread the line to understand that this line meant it had switched to a different pov, and then repeat when that happened again.
In addition, a couple characters were suddenly named without being introduced, eg "he had been talking to her (previously unnamed character) for a few days now. Jessie (random name) was pretty short." and we just had to figure out Jessie was the girl he was talking to.
Story: The concept is really intriguing, but it starts out pretty slow paced.
Style: here is the first major issue. 1st, Author forgets that we can't read his mind. a lot of stuff has been told in the story that I have been attempting to piece together, and while I have figured out some of the world building, the context of which the situation we are reading about is pretty unclear. we are thrust into the situation and just scrambling to understand what is happening. The majority of my context actually comes from the synopsis, which shows how little was actually explained. (This author doesn't need to worry about info dumping if he simply gives no info lol)
2nd, author just isn't making the story engaging. By not introducing the characters, I don't have any feelings about them. In fact, the main character is initially unlikable, so if I had any feelings, they were negative. There was a major fight scene, and because the magic system was not explained at all, I had no clue what was going on and it was just boring to read about, especially with the POV shifts I mentioned earlier going on between the two combatants.
Character: The 2nd major issue. Main character is unlikable. He is on a dangerous mission with an experienced mentor, and just goofing off, ignoring the mentors warnings, doesn't take it seriously, and as a result, nearly gets th - Kimbrough7Royal Road★★★ 2.5The MC isn't redeemable. He's supposed to be some big shot graduate but he's an immature child. You can't take him seriously and it kills the story.
He's so bad, it's hard to get past it. I don't recommend this book unless you want an immature MC who frustrates you for 900 pages.
