- TanyaBestLaidPlansRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've been following this story from the time it was first published in Spacebattles and am grateful to find it here. I'm always hungry for stories involving clever, capable female protagonists and this story absolutely hits the spot.
Lu Na, the female lead of this story, is an inventor who wants to use her various inventions to overcome the limitations normally imposed on non-summoners in a magical world where summoners rule almost everything. I absolutely love her - she's clever, hard-working, inventive, but still has some growing up to do because of how she was raised basically as a hothouse flower hidden away from the world. She's a wonderful protagonist and I want to see her survive and thrive no matter what.
In general, I am really enjoying this story - it has a fun, hooky plot, some great supporting characters, an interesting magic system, and some great banter. I am left with so many questions, such as: What's going on with Lu Na's spirit, who seems to know more than she should? Why did Lu Na's mother leave and what does that have to do with the sect looking for the Lu maidens, or the jewelry she left with Lu Na? How will Lu Na survive in a world that seems to want to consume her?
I'm looking forward to having my questions answered in the future! - arliewritesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A good read for xianxia fans - especially folks who are in the mood for a hooky fast paced plot that they can easily return to and remember the story.
Plot:
Definitely the highlight for this story. I was initially caught off guard by how quickly we are thrown into the plot but it works well as the plot continue to unfold at a snappy pace. The author is good at not having too many plot threads going at once and slipping in reminders of ongoing plot points like...
the hair pin and Lu Na's mother, as well as unravelling details about the sect she is running from and the life she has been brought up in.
The plot feels fresh despite following some familiar tropes and the pacing gives the reader a strong sense of direction without giving too much away.
Character:
I knocked off a star for the side characters which can feel a bit two dimensional at times, but the MC really is the star of the show. She has an intriguing unique invention system of wards, a unique hinted at piece of magical gear, and a nice blend of wits and empathy for the characters around them. The two main side characters hold their own and theres some comedy sprinkled in from a spirit character that gives it a comfy anime vibe.
Style:
The style is the weakest aspect, there's some blunt dialogue without subtext at times, and I crave some more emotions, but all its really missing is a good line editor to become a professional feeling novel.
Grammar:
Occasional grammar issues or tense mistakes that don't subtract from the overall reading experience
Overall:
Worth a read! An enjoyable low brain power plot that pulls you through an interesting situation. A nice initial binge with a regular update schedule. It'll be a force to be reckoned with after some polish. - ToasteriRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Story feels a bit like it started from the middle, but I can get around that. Some minor spelling errors, nothing that would ruin the story. Can not really say much at this point, but it is not a bad start, just feels like it tries to run quite fast-forward.
