- A5URARoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is possibly one of the best Cultivation stories that I have read in Royal Road. It just keeps piquing my interest as I read on. The MC is shrewd and is the type you would root for while at the same time cuss at. The world building is outstanding and it surely does take me to the world that is being described, however while I feel that the progression is a tad bit slower than I would like, I do understand that it is necessary for the story to stay grounded.
- Ep1cRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ive been lurking on this story for quite a while ,(right around ch 88), and its a great read! I will say, theres a weird sexual undertone for like 5 chapters, but otherwise its amazing! Easy 5/5 stars. Its an interesting take on xianxia and I would highly recommend you give it a read!
- MaxitaurRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Lighthearted easy reading mixed with the occasional emotional sucker punch. Tasteful combat, fun scenes, and main themes worth thinking about. At first glance, the characters are one-dimensional, but going a little deeper the characters skip straight over two-dimensional to 3D. A great story to read as a palate cleanser without expecting too much from it. And can’t stress enough how nice it is that the story made the hard decision of actually finishing and wrapping things up.
- TeamDmanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0God-King comes down to play speedrunner in the mortal realms, with the disregard for rules and humanity that one might expect. Good story, good grammar. The MC experiences growth commensurate with a speedrunner who has done this a lot already, but the world manages to introduce challenges that are enough to keep them in check. Great so far, with big things happening
- TheReaperKingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's not a 5 star story, but it's 5 stars in enjoyment. With well written charector, funny jokes, and eloquent language, I can't help but smile at every page.
The real gold dust here is actually very simple. Almost all cultivation novels pretend to be deep and end up falling into obvious cliches. This just goes, why pretend, and then intentionally uses those cliche tropes in clever ways. It's refreshing. - BookEnjoyerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Royal road is what it is, and if you've been on here long enough then you can see the signs and read between the lines. You've read the synopsis and you've probably read a few other reviews before getting to mine (almost all of which explained the first few chapters), and I can tell you that this series is entertaining.
Is it a standard novel that hits all of the bells and whistles, from character growth to deep and meaningful themes? No.
Is there a central plot and cohesive story? No.
Is that a problem? No, not for this type of novel.
Don't come into this expecting tension or a central story, such as the demon king rising up and the Hero needs to stop him, or a regular man trying to save his family from the apocalypse. No, this is the story of a Master hiding in the body of a child for fun. A tiger pretending to be a pig, if you will.
And it's good. Without a central plot, strong meaning, and an emotion-evoking goal, a story needs something to carry it along. That 'something', is a fun scramble for power, a manipulative and amusing main character who plays everyone like a fiddle to get the best response, and crazy side characters who add in the colour between the lines of this colouring book of a story.
Although I make it sound bad, it really isn't. Any other novel would crumble without many of these things, but it is expected here, so give the first few chapters a try. Very fun and amusing, giving you all the best stuff without the filler or fluff. - ajwpipRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Congrats on finishing. I hope this means a quick move to Amazon and Audible for the rest of the story. I enjoy that there is an exterior and interior struggle in this story. Exterior we have the speed run and whatever cosmic struggle is being foreshadowed. But there is also an internal struggle for the MC in terms of the conflict between his isolation and boredom and obsessive hobby versus making any human connections. I’m not too far into the story but I hope the internal struggle pays out well as the narrative unfolds.
- BliindRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5In the beginning it was a clever subversion of a cultivation novel, now it has become a slapstick retreading of many of the usual tropes. If you are looking for a cultivation power fantasy with some juvenile humour this might be for you.
It's not for me anymore but good on the author for producing this. - BuffaloBuddyRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Overall, it's an entertaining read and the style is engaging but a lot of the MC's decisions, particularly his ability to cause his own issues, make me cringe.
There's even a point where the MC thinks to himself along the lines of 'Ah, my old enemy, the consequences of my actions' (paraphrasing from my memory).
A big part of the uniqueness of this novel is the MC perspective - an immortal God, entertaining himself by repeatedly reincarnating and trying to become immortal again faster and faster. From this POV, it makes sense that the MC is going to have a largely big-picture attitude. He doesn't care about the people he meets, they are all ants to him and the disasters and bigotry his current body faces are simply amusing.
BUT, this can be frustrating for the reader when a lot of his day-to-day decisions cause him further issues in the 'short-term' (since our MC is thinking in terms of centuries). Yes, things seem to be going differently this 'run', he's running into more difficulties than normal and there seems to be unusual godly interference in the world (from his POV, as the reader we KNOW there is very deliberate interference). But for an immortal, super objective character, he's still not thinking about the world around him and what all these things might mean.
This could be deliberately part of the character since maybe he's fallen into bad habits and expectations from his repeated reincarnations but it makes this Godly MC feel like he lacks forethought, which just makes me cringe.
He treats the world like it's a game even to the point where he is blocking his own path. Maybe this will change with character development over time but for now it's frustrating to read.
For example: (spoiler below)
When he acts like a stupid, innocent savage upon meeting Lin at the artificers guild, he goes into the building with the intention of becoming a high level artificer - which means he's going to need to deal with bureaucracy and snobbish higher-ups for at least the next - AmethystVixenRoyal Road★ 1.0I read this because of Savage sage which I love but I wish I could burn this from my memory. To say I don't like Dorian is understatement of epic proportions. If the goal was to redeem him by the end that definitely did not happen in a satisfactory way. The stories already written so what's done is done but I could see some real potential in it that just falls flat for me. I'm honestly confused on why anyone likes this. Is unredeemable assholes what's everyone into? He literally suffered no consequences or learned anything. Him picking that dao in the end is like a slap in the face. I think it's either a hit or you strongly dislike it like I do.
