Description
El has trained all her life to do two things – to fly the skies on wings of roaring flames, and to burn her enemies to the ground. Now, having graduated the academy, she’s ready to do both those things.
…until she’s dispatched in the opposite direction of the war effort. To a city named aftervegetablesof all things. Seriously, who names a place after those? But, despite it being a routine mission, El and her unit find a new enemy waiting for them. One who isn’t afraid of a little fire.
With the war now on two fronts, El and her friends must use every spark of magic they have in a high-flying gambit against an enemy bearing a truth that threatens her faith – and a choice that threatens her nation.
And, if she’s lucky, maybe she’ll even find a good sandwich along the way. That’d be a real win.

- KaelasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Not a lot of story yet to make a full judgement on but what there is so far is very promising. Give it until at least this chapter before bailing if you can. I was interested enough in the MC, El, to keep going despite some discomfort with El's home nation because [spoiler] but the seeds being laid the last few chapters are promising to make it pay off handsomely.
- ShayanaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is soooo good!
First off, the grammar. It’s excellent, maybe one tiny mistake every few chapters, and the grammar is advanced, with widely varied sentence structure that makes this even more of a joy to read.
The style is engaging and just hits the sweet spot for me in terms of tone—serious when it needs to be, funny when it can get away with it, sarcastic at the right moments…really enjoyable.
The story is really interesting and creative. I like how the story is flipped partway through the first book; little things that felt wrong were explained and the main character’s perception of some of what was right and wrong (and who the good guys and the enemies are) is turned on its head. The whole idea of the Pyre at the center of Pycrin’s society empowering everyone in so very many ways is extremely interesting, and when you learn WHY… well, I've already dropped too many spoilers as it is! I did like how expectations were subverted and the plot twisted in exciting ways.
The fight scenes are really well done, too. They’re detailed and just the right level of intensity: engaging and with high stakes at times, but not overwhelming or horrifically gruesome.
I also really enjoyed the characters in this story. Each of them we meet has their own little quirks making them unique, and they feel like real people. I can’t wait to read the rest! - vermosapienRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In this world you follow El and her special teams military group who are dispatched to their first big mission in the opposite end of the war effort. What they find there ends up having far reaching consequences for everyone involved but when they go home to report back they find that they are sworn to secrecy and this information is getting swept under the rug. El believes there is a conspiracy afoot and little does she know what she just stumbled into is going to create far reaching consequences for everyone involved! This story is set in a world where people’s magic comes from The Pyre. Basically a Giant flame that sits in the middle of there biggest city. Each person has a little bit of the flame inside them and that is what grants them there power wether it’s just to keep them a comfortable temperature to being able to manifest flaming swords and even flaming wings that allow them to fly!
The characters are well written and always shown through Els perspective. This is a war so people are dying or going missing in action frequently it is a very fast paced story so there’s not as much time for character development but I don’t think it takes away from the story at all. The enemies are tough and there aren’t any wins handed to the main character here. The fights are AMAZING! The way the El uses her flight powers are very inventive and the way the author has the fights in different terrain settings makes them very unique and keeps you on the edge of your seat!
If you’re looking for a fast paced story with awesome fights and a good mystery look no further! As soon as I picked this up I was hooked and I believe you will be too! - cagrifRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall this is a very good piece of work. Everything makes sense, the worldbuilding is good, and the twists are unexpected to an extent. My only problem is that this is marked progression fantasy, and up to where I am at chapter 40, there is no progression. The main character grows smarter, uncovers secret plots and becomes a different person but she does not get stronger. I have no problem with this as it is a good story otherwise, but seeing progression fantasy in the title and then reading while getting no progression fantasy makes me constantly think about it.
