- SmogFighterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m really excited to see how this turns out.
I don’t want to post spoilers, so I can’t really go into detail about stuff in the story.
I am out of things to say about this story, but they require at least 50 words worth of rambling to be able to post a review. - A. StargazerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I found this story interesting. I'm reviewing it at chapter 6, which is presently all there is online.
The author has a very active voice and style, and the action moves very rapidly right from the beginning of the story. While I'd generally say this is a good thing, I think that sometimes the author moves too quickly and could stand to slow down in critical places to make certain that the reader understands what is going on.
Grammatically I saw very few issues, nothing worth deducting a point for.
The story is interesting and well thought out. The world(s) get fleshed out as the story moves along, and the conflict is present from the beginning of the story. I will say that the first four chapters few chapters feel more like an extended prologue than part of the story itself. They deal with the origin of the MC and setting up the background/conflict.
This story has a cast of interesting characters. One of my criticisms, however, is that the narration does seem to jump around a bit and it's not always clear who or what's POV we're supposed to be following. This goes back to the author's style and my criticism that because sometimes things move so quickly it's hard to follow along. - AltoventureRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Soulmaster's Ascent is a fusion sci-fi/fantasy litRPG with an opening that gets right into the action. At this point in the story the protagonist has yet to come into his own, but the groundwork is there for a fresh take on the genre. Interested readers should stick around to see how the system and characters develop.
Style: The first chapters are a little fast paced but make up what is essentially an extended prologue, and the speed is mostly justified. I do find the writing a clipped in a few spots as the author breaks what could be a paragraph into several individual sentence-paragraphs, though that could have been meant for effect and doesn’t affect the read overall.
Story: It’s hard to put this blend of scifi and fantasy In a clear box as far as genre, and in this story I would put that down to the author working within a rather unique setting. The story so far is light on the system and it is a little unclear if the RPG to the lit is a natural occurrence, an artificial one made by the society, or both. In the first full chapter there is already a set ranking system used by the society, but in the next chapter they go into the plan to create the WPS which appears to be the system proper. It’s still early in the story and I’m always a fan of system exploration, just cautioning that this is a little vague towards the beginning. The story otherwise has a good setup for an engaging tale, and if the truth behind the system is between both worlds it would certainly fit with this satisfying blend of genres.
Grammar: No issues or even opinions on this author’s grammar, they’ve got it down.
Character(s): So far there’s not much we know about Jun save for his origin and starting power. The other characters are written well enough, though I’d almost say not enough time was spent on them considering the pace of the first few chapters. However, I don’t see any issues that won’t be ironed out by more of what the author’s cooking. - skilly7717Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Grammar (5/5): No complaints on the grammar. Everything flowed smoothly. Excellent job!
Style (4/5): The pacing is really fast. It’s justifiable, but sometimes it feels a little too fast. I wish the authors would slow down a bit in certain areas so the reader can fully digest what’s going on. It’s dialogue-heavy with a decently sized cast. I get lost mid-conversation due to the lack of dialogue tags. I’m not saying you need dialogue tags for everything. Sometimes, the reader needs to be reminded of who is speaking.
Story (4.5/5): The story is in its early stages. We are quickly introduced to the conflict with a bunch of time skips afterward. Right now, the author seems to be setting everything up. It does look promising, though.
Characters (4.5/5): Jun is our MC. We don’t know much about him, granted it’s still developing and in its early stages. The side characters, though, are well-made and realistic. Their voices bring life into the story, which is always good to see. Not a lot of time is spent on them, but I’m sure that’ll change as the story progresses.
Overall (4.5/5): It’s a very promising story. The setup is done well. As the story progresses, I have no doubts that the author will deliver a banger. If you like sci-fi/fantasy, then this is for you. Give it a go!
