Description

Cannon fodder. That's all Oakley was.

Summoned to fulfill a mundane purpose for a careless arcane practitioner.

Now he's trapped in a world unlike his own, facing beasts- and worse- with little more than his own wits and determination.

He was going to find that mage and get back to his family- whatever it took.

Follow Oakley as he meets people unlike any he's seen on Earth, travelling through a land of fantastical creatures and abundant magic- all with one purpose in mind.

Screw morals. If that mage couldn't return him home, then no amount of magic would save him from Oakley's wrath. A wrath that hides a much darker, much deeper plan- with him at the center.

This story starts off as fairly standard Isekai - a man from England whisked off to a fantasy realm - but a ton of small details, twists, and most especially, layers of subtle characterization start to set this one apart.
To start, the means of travel - the MC being pulled into a painting he was working on - was cool and different. Then arriving in the hoard cave of a relatively fragile, fairy-like dragon as the product of some Wizard casting "Summan Humanoids II" or something served as an entertaining variation, especially since they weren't even meant to kill the thing but just distract it while the caster pilfered a few choice bits from the hoard.
The MC setting off on a quest to find the caster and thus, hopefully, a way home serves as the story's main course but parts I've enjoyed most are the little details and descriptions that bring the story to life.
From the artsy "non-combat dragon", to the bizarre fungal wolves, to the man-eating treeasaur, to little details of a home the MC is burglarizing, the world feels rich and real in cool little ways.
If the story was a painting, it would be one seemingly similar to others in its style, but when you look closely, all the artist's little details and flourishes make it stand out from the pack.

Being a painter can be rough. For Oakley, life being rough has nothing to do with painting and everything to do with a whole new world. Filled with fire. You could say this story is a blast and be 100% correct. That said, if he doesn’t make it back in time to give his daughter a new painting. I’m going to be very disappointed in him as a father. I WILL BE CHECKING.
Style: The story is told from Oakley's perspective in the third person and follows him closely. With an omniscient narrator I would implore the author to have a large amount of interludes from other POV’s. I enjoy how the writing is paced and nothing ever really feels terribly forced. Overall, it's a put together story with a lot of planning put into it.
Story: It's an isekai, which would normally be par for the course. However this one right here is special in a few ways. One the MC actually has meaningful relationships left behind on Earth unlike most wish fulfillment. And secondly it's not a litrpg. I can count on one hand the number of well written non litrpg stories on here and this is one of them. You’re missing out if you haven’t read this one.
Grammar: No errors that I spotted, it’s clear this has been through the editing passes at least three or four times. Or maybe the author is just that guy. Either way I am very pleased.
Character Score: All of the characters are  fully developed and interesting which is more than I can say for a lot of stories on this site. Clearly each character has personalized and non generic goals, motivations, and short term desires. However in the case of Oakley’s experience, I wish the author put a bit more time into explaining his mental state. Being chased by beasts, in a new world without his burgeoning family. I want more insight into Oakley’s mind during these moments but the third person perspective makes that quite hard. Still I hope for more with every release!

This story is basically isekai, one of the most popular tropes here on Royalroad, which is basically when the MC gets teleported to another world. It starts off just like any average isekai-though with a little less excitement (no nuclear bombs or gas explosions, just heavy rain). The MC is just painting his daughter's birthday gift, when the rain gets extremely heavy out of nowhere. Then, he's teleported to another word.
Right away, that's exciting. Fighting dragons on day one. That sort of stuff. It's fantasy, but not LitRPG. That's the intresting part.
Most isekai here is also LitRPG. This isn't. It's more of traditional fantasy.
That's what makes this intresting. Definitly something I'd recommend to people who like this website's books, but are bored of LitRPG.

This well-written Isekai revolves around an Artist named Oakley, who, while making an art piece, was suddenly pulled into a strange (new?) world.
And now, he needs to hunt down the dude who suddenly threw him in the middle of a cave with a dragon in it.
The first fight scenes were good, including the mad dash away from the spore-ridden dogs in the forest.
The story's pacing and level of detail are pretty comfortable for me, just enough detail to paint good scenes but not too much that it becomes over-detailed—all in all, a great adventure story in the making.

Sorrow of the Summoned follows the tale of Oakley, a painter who just wants to gift his daughter a new painting for her birthday. Unfortunately, strange events lead Oakley to get sucked away into another world where he's quite literally thrown into a fiery start. Safe to say, the story is off to a fun start and I've certainly enjoyed reading about Oakley and his adventures.
Stylistically, the story is told from Oakley's perspective and follows him fairly tightly. I enjoy how the writing is paced and nothing ever really feels terribly forced. Overall, it's a really well written story.
Grammatically, nothing has really jumped out at me and I've had no problem reading. It's clear that the author put some time into each chapter and I really appreciate that.
In terms of Character and Story, Oakley and the whole cast that we've met so far are all very interesting and deep characters. No one feels shallow or without depth and the motives behind why certain characters do certain things makes sense. As for the story, while the characters have yet to jump into any sort of adventure or climax yet, it's still well told and follows the trends of similar portal fantasies well. The actions is well written and always around the corner and interactions between characters are very realistic and fun. It's clear that there's a lot of fun adventures that await Oakley and I can't wait to read more about them!
I highly recommend reading Sorrow of the Summoned!
