Description

Smith is a lawyer, slimy of course, but only in humid weather. On this far-off planet: that is essentially always. Today's case is a difficult one truly, not least because he's defending an alien, but this murderer wants nothing more than to plead guilty. Smith can't have that! No criminally competent client of his should ever end up in jail!

There's something about short stories. In one sense, they can be very hard. In another, they also by their nature avoid many of the pitfalls of longer format stories.
This is a quick story. It focuses heavily on building this truly alien world. And on conveying the character of the protagonist. The protagonist goes on to make a point in an argument and then, as he is leaving, is faced with the exact situation he was just arguing about. Morally dubious, but not a hypocrite.
I don't think I could stand a novel, but a quick dip in the pool is refreshing.

There was an element to this that unfortunately kept me from really immersing myself in this odd setting, given the nature of treefolk being in the setting. As if suspension of disbelief could be strained anymore... the newspaper ate my focus right up. How could a society allow for such a thing, to literally be made of the pulp and even go so far as to consume it yet be so concerned over flowers? It was distracting because the story had these elements in focus and did not address the proverbial elephant in the room.
