Description
It has been six years since the end of the the Four-Throne War, a generation-spanning conflict that claimed countless lives and scarred the face of the world forever. Since the signing of the Equineal Accords, the nation powers of Valmont, Isceria, Helkoran, and Medeus have committed to a fifty-year armistice.
Now the hard-won peace is at risk of collapse. In the shadows of Equinox - the City of the Empty Throne, former imperial capital and the only neutral ground left on the continent of Alteria - lurks a plot to start the war anew. Yet these schemes will run headlong into three exceptional individuals, each on their own path.
In his campaign to obtain sovereignty for his people, the mage-politician Thero Varglass may need to play dirty just like his honoured peers in the Hall of Justice. It would be more expedient for Thero to cross lines, but what will he need to do to change the world, and will he recognize himself when he's done?
The agent Merissa Attale has sworn sacred oaths to the Oreikhalia, the covert organization of her faith and homeland. She has also sworn vows of protection to her wife and son. When she is sent on a mission to Equinox, information will come to light that will put all of her loyalties to the test.
Former officer Skeir Nocke has hunted the followers of an infamous war criminal all across Alteria. Now, he believes that his once-tormentor is secretly free and hiding under the very noses of the Justices that sentenced him. How far will Skeir go for his vengeance?

- JacksonWritesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is more mature than a lot of those on Royal Road in most senses of the word. The content warnings on it are fully justified in the first chapter and, as far as I can tell, it's not going to get less violent or deal with less mature themes from here.
The story is also more mature in that, frankly, it's a novel, not a web series in its style and pacing. This is a slow burn bringing in tons of political intrigue with characters who are obviously mutifacted from the moment you meet them. Like the involved characters, you won't understand everything going on right away, it's a web of conspiracy, and, as a new reader to the world, it's a dense but very enjoyable time.
My only qubble (hey we only knocked off half a star in one category) is that there is a fine line between in-story worldbuilding, and leaving your reader out to dry for a little too long. There are a lot of terms offered and used without giving them context when they come up. Though, in most cases, the scene outlines what you need to know, it ends up with some sentences and beats that don't hit as hard upon first glance because you aren't aware of how hard they should hit.
Also gimme more Merissa. I can see that she's not in the upcoming chapters as much but she's my favorite part :( - Let'sGetKrakenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am genuinely impressed with the first three chapters of this. It absolutely touches on darker themes - the introduction starts with a man being tortured to death, after all - but it's compelling and well-written.
The style is absolutely excellent - if anything, the prose might be the strongest component of this. The vocabulary is rich and it's written in a style that matches exactly what you'd expect from this sort of fantasy intrigue. It's dripping in character. The grammar is great and while the worldbuilding is dense (see below), the writing absolutely isn't.
The only element where I would knock off a half-point would be the story score, and that's just because there is a lot of information and names thrown at you, to the point where it's a bit overwhelming. The story seems very promising but it does very much throw you into the deep end of interesting but nonetheless inundating worldbuilding.
Speaking of which, the worldbuilding and the characters are both strong elements so far. The author has managed to give each a distinct voice and their own hooks are each quite compelling.
In summary - would definitely recommend checking this one out if you don't mind violence - you won't regret it!
