- (GW)GamerwolfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story revolves around our Main character Fii.
Going from running errands to somehow survive the Slum life all the way to becoming a Hero called
Axion
as of Chapter 10. The tradeoff for her getting those superpowers
gravity (awesome choice)
is simply that she has to learn how to use them and change over time into a better Fii. The start is hard and Dr Edit "trains" her until she cant move anymore, but its worth it. The Potential of both the Story and the Superpower is huge.
Style:
While its a classical "0 to Hero" kind of story, you can definitely see, that it isnt just something simple like that. Author san tries to go further than simply that and like that the story gets a unique touch.
Grammar:
Great. Its easy to understand and the Author listens to feedback. Also its gotten better since the last Writathon!
Characters:
Very enjoyable personalities. Be it a very nice tech vendor, who helped Fii to survive, a Doctor who wants to experiment on her or just some nice helpers of said doc. I like them all.
Overall i can see how much Author san improved since the last Writathon and definitely recommend to check this story out! The Art in every chapter is great btw. - Ebon_The_PhantomRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a great ride! For me at the very least. I feel like the development of the MC flows pretty well and I never once didn't believe her choices. Future events seem to have been set up nicely so if it continues I'll definitely be reading more. I'm hoping that going forward we may get some points of view within the metropolis( outside of Edith) because the spin the guardians and the rest of metropolis can put on events has to be wild.
- FenraeDraconisRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I actually found this story a lot better than the summary was suggesting it would be. The writing is well done and has a very good flow. The character feels like she has many facets she can develop into, a stubborn orphan just needing to survive and now finding that she can breathe and start exploring what she really wants. If you want something well written, then start here.
My only complaint... LACK OF CHAPTERS! GIMME! - ThrillianRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Slumdog Hero follows Fii, a young scrappy survivor trying to survive on the mean streets. Even though Fii has a good heart, she has no interest in being a hero - until her inclusion in a scientific experiment changes everything, granting her amazing new poers.
"Slumdog Hero" follows the familiar beats of the superhero genre, but it does so with skill and ease. We see Fii develop and learn to use her superpowers, always under the watchful eye of scientist Edith and her AI companion.
World-building is where the story really shines. The author really does a good job of creating a beaten-down, grounded setting you feel like you see and taste - but probably wouldn't want to in real life. This setting also imbues our scrappy protagonist with an underdog status that makes her a lot of fun to watch.
The accompanying images are also a nice touch which add depth and excitement to the world. It especially helps us picture the characters and her high-tech futuristic world, even a few of the pictures, particularly of the setting, do feel a bit repetitive.
The addition of a glossary to flesh out some of the slang is also well-done and further adds the world-building.
Overall, everything works together in a tight and slick package. There are a few moments later in the series, particularly when one character's words are written in light blue text, that are a bit jarring, but mostly everything else works to its advantage.
If you are a fan of sci-fi or superheroes, I definitely recommend checking this out! - wisedragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I have not read many stories of the "superhero" genre, but when I saw this work pop up when I was searching on Royalroad I decided to try it out. It seemed interesting, both the cover and summary sparked my interest and thus curling up amidst my hoard (as dragons often do) I started to read.
The first chapter already blew me away, introducing me to this world, or rather this slum, that felt alive. The character who I was introduced to was just a normal girl, just trying to make do in this place where she had lived for her whole life. She fully understood life there, she didn't feel "out of place", instead she fit perfectly in this world, one of the many people living in the slums.
She used the slang (which I absolutely love and wish was used more often in stories like these) that everybody else in the slums used, had her own views, friends, dreams and much more. Then she was given powers, and as she learned more and more throughout the story I could see how much her views and actions fit with her environment, she uses her power to help her community, upholding the rules of the community and helping out where she can.
Fii, or Axiom, is a genuinely good person, trying to help, and though I see many challenges ahead for her I believe that despite all the odds that are stacked against her this slumshine will achieve her goals. Whenever I read a chapter from her pov I am genuinely rooting for her to succeed.
As for the other characters I have similar things to say, they are their own people, with their own wants and desires and worldview, living in a world that, at least to me feels alive and breathing.
It is this along with Fii, Kasumi, Edith and all these other people that makes this one of my favorite stories, a story which I shall gladly add to my hoard.
- May the Gods of writing guide your quill and may your creativity never fail you.
-The Wise Dragon - PoTaytoHeadRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I've enjoyed the story that I've read so far. The thing that I enjoy the most is that the author tries to keep the powers of this world (seemingly) grounded in science. Powers are better used when the principles behind them are understood. This is given some explanation and time, but we never really explore it. There will be some spoilers in this review, but you can skip to the bottom to see a summed-up reasoning for my score.
Style: The style of the author is more than competent. I can tell that the author has written before and understand the basic flow of how to write. I don't see any major issues with the premise of the story so far or the major beats. I wouldn't call it cliche, but there's definitely a sub-genre of magical/powerful girl that's innocent and wants to help.
The only issues I have with the style pertain to a tendency early on to explain things in big exposition dumps between characters rather than to show us with character's acting out scenes. There are several training chapters, they're just preceding by chapters that use a very heavy hand to explain powers to us and use analogies rather than have Fii use her powers and explore what they do. There were some real opportunities to SHOW us Edith and Fii bonding, how Fii gains control/knowledge/confidence, but it's sort of just....done. We get a few chapters and then we're onto the streets patrolling. It feels like a real missed opportunity.
Story: This story is boiler-plate. It's very middle-of-the-road. Again, not necessarily cliched in how it approaches the start of the story, but there are no risks here.
That being said, there are some contrived actions/decisions by characters to further the plot. Characters acting in ways they would not act for the plot pulls me out of the story. There are several times in earlier chapters that main characters will do or say something that just leaves me scratching my head.
Fii choosing to argue/fight with the gang leader seems like something she wouldn't do, esp
