Despite not really explaining what has happened in this world, there are some subtle hints of an apocalypse of monsters, and that's just the setting. The characters are where this prologue really shines, weaving thoughts and dialogue together to create vivid images of people, they might not be okay, but they are alive, and not totally alone. I enjoyed this snippet.
